I have no idea why the OP just doesn't call Apple, set up a return. The phone is defective. Send the phone to Apple, they send a replacement back to him. No restocking fee. It's under warranty with Apple. Why he is being so stubborn and continues to deal with AT&T is beyond me. He has multiple choices, and refuses to listen to any of us.

Because att should be able to make this swap for him and make things a lot easier, but they refuse to.

Then just go through Apple. There's the solution. Going to spend days trying to get them to drop the restocking fee. He could have sent the phone to Apple, and he would have a replacement before he ever get AT&T to drop the restocking fee.

So because the options that AT&T offered you are not to your liking, "they suck. Leave them..."? Wow. Pretty interesting 'take' on the matter, IMO. As you say, you could buy the phone from Best Buy... but you didn't... you actively chose AT&T... so now you are forced to deal with the options they gave you...

You made a choice and now are not happy with your options. Not sure what to tell you...
[doublepost=1538255358][/doublepost]

Not sure that you want to hear this, but you are simply a number (and a monthly payment) to all of the wireless carriers... not just AT&T... they care significantly more about your money than they do about you.

Um....they have a 14 day return policy. HONOR THE DAMN POLICY. RESTOCKING FEE FOR A DEFECTIVE PHONE? THAT IS BS. All they do is return the device to Apple....there is no reason for the fee for a DEFECTIVE phone in their 14 days policy. It is PURE GREED.

And so what happens if you go to an AT&T store, and they drop the restocking fee, but don't have one of that color or size you want? So now you have to wait until they ship you another, which likely is what would happen anyway. So just go through Apple and get the ball rolling now.

Because it is not my phone. It is my daughter off at college. It more the principle of the thing. AT&T is a ****** company. I dropped Directv when AT&T bought them. I changed my Internet to Comcast from AT&T (Comcast has been fine.....I know their history). AT&T coverage where I'm at is better and I get a discount thru FAN. Plus, I have phone thru AT&T Next or I would switch in a Heartbeat.

The restocking fee shouldn’t be charged to start with. That’s the issue.

Um.....it is my daughter. She has the phone. She will probably just pay the $45. Look....I don't care about the $45, it is the Principle of the BS policy. I have to PAY YOU to take back the DEFECTIVE PHONE YOU SOLD ME>?
[doublepost=1538257562][/doublepost]
What is the defect? AT&T may have looked at it and said not a defect. Some people think a slight yellow tint is a defect and demand replacements.

The phone display turns off for minutes at a time and will not turn back on. No response from buttons or taps on the screen. And yes, it is fully charged.

Then just continue to stress yourself out, raise your blood pressure and rant on this forum and complain to them until you turn blue in the face, or just deal hassle free with Apple. Your choice.

Sorry I missed that. Either way, deal with Apple. If stressing out over $45 is making his life miserable, and AT&T won't budge, go through Apple. Posting on this forum complaining about it will not make AT&T change their mind. Yes, it sucks, but there are other options.

Again, I dont think you are reading, and I dont mean to be rude at all. I respect your opinion. The reason why I side with OP on this one is because I went through the same thing with no problem. I also live about 2 hours from the apple store. I personally wouldnt mind doing the exchange through Apple, but I went to the ATT store because I could get a phone that same day. I was not charged a fee because it is their policy that if the phone is defective, they can swap it out no problem and no restocking fee.

I even spoke with them.

There is no guarantee the OP can get the exact same phone the same day. It may not be in stock. The carriers may very well be sick of dealing with the issues with these new phones. Especially the poor wifi and LTE connections. I would bet the carriers are seeing a much higher return rate with the new phones, and are not going to budge anymore on their restocking fee policy, even with defective phones. They most likely want people to deal with Apple from this point forward.

It's not a matter of them being kind and then "budging" on their restocking fee. A restocking fee is meant to cover the cost of returning a perfectly good device and and the seller having to resell it. This is not the case as it is defective. Let's say you went to the store and bought a sony camera and got home and it did not work. You then took it back to best buy and they said sure we will exchange it for a working one but we will charge a restocking fee of $45. Would that not seem stupid?

I'm not saying charging a restocking fee for a defective phone is right. But if they are not going to budge, the only other choice is to deal with Apple.

The OP explained his reasons why dealing with Apple is difficult in his daughter’s situation. Beyond that, it is perfectly reasonable to call others’ attention to a terrible AT&T warranty swap experience under the “Carrier” section of an iPhone message board.

My kid bought a Xs from ATT. Didn’t like it. Wanted to wait for a Xr. ATT took it back no charge.

If it’s within 14 days I’d def return it or get ahold of att cust service and ask for a credit after you pay the fee.

If you keep waiting you’ll end up with a refurb, apple refurbs are good but why get a used phone on launch month when you paid for a new one ?

@OP, AT&T buys the phone from apple like a consumer would, they don’t make their money on phones. They lose money on returns (they can’t sale the phone as new anymore), hence the $45 fee. It’s their policy and you signed for it, deal with it or purchase from Apple to avoid a restocking fee.

Also kindness goes a long way, AT&T has waived a restocking fee before for me, it was my first time returning a phone. I don’t know how you approached them, but based on your responses in this thread, you don’t seem very nice.

It’s not a return, it’s a defective product. Why are you spreading disinformation?
