In short - infrastructure, labor and other costs haven't gotten cheaper. People sometimes forget that. Not saying that telecoms aren't making their money - but I find it amusing that there's so much "hate" towards carriers that are trying to maximize profits, but Apple gets a "free pass" so to speak. At the end of the day - companies are looking to make money and have stockholders to answer to. Does that mean they should alienate customers - no. But sometimes it happens.

Spoken like a true company man. :)

Are you actually trying to compare T-Mobile to ATT...like as in T-Mobile is better than ATT?
Not even close.
I bought a $60 Nokia T-Mobile phone and tried them out and would have to go to a window at my job to get a signal. I really wanted to leave AT&T, the fact is there coverage is better in my area.

I assume that they're leaving the iPad unlimited plans alone then? It says that the increase applies for "smartphone" unlimited data plans...

I hope it does not change, but even if it does, $35 for all-you-can-eat, non-throttled LTE is still amazing. They have not touched these iPad plans since inception, even with all the throttling and tethering restrictions on the smartphone plans, so I would think the chances are decent given this history. But I still have my fingers crossed.

It's worth noting that that $60 Nokia probably wasn't band 12. I am by no means a TMO apologist; ATT is absolutely better. But TMO band 12 is also a LOT better indoors. A LOT a lot. You can sign up with TMO and test drive for a month with a 6s for zero down and no money owed if you decide to not stay with them. Just walk in and tell thm it didn't work out. All it costs is a credit check.

I say all this ebcause I was in the same position as you. Exactly. Band 12 changed that, at least around here.

For an unlimited plan that was never really unlimited. For all the sneaky practices by AT&T and lies told about throttling.
They do not deserve the increase. I hope someone sues them over this change.

Because ATT was the only carrier to ever lie or throttle...

And yes in a sue happy nation we totally need more lawsuits...

Seriously though "Unlimited" NEVER Means "unlimited" at least not by definition ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT

Find a way to use 100k minutes or 90k messages a month and carriers will raise eyebrows
( see more below in reply to the other guy )

Uh hum... tell me exactly how you ABUSE unlimited data? You have an option for unlimited data and that fits your lifestyle so you choice it as your plan yet using it abuses it? SMH

Ask T-Mobile CEO John Lugere and Sprint's CEO

They refer to users finding ways to use
500GB 1TB 2TB 3TB or 4TB as abusers

Comcast ( home internet) refers to users over 300GB as abusers unless its explicitly in their plan

Frankly "Unlimited" is a word I take quite literal as far as words in the dictionary go

I feel "unlimited" should just be that
Rather 20 30 100 600GB or in the TB range if it says unlimited it should be just that.

Too funny.

I, for one, have been amazed that AT&T hasn't raised the price on my grandfathered unlimited data long before this. Seven years without a price hike? That seems long overdue to me. I'm just glad they did it after relaxing their throttling policies.

And, no, a mere $5/month bump isn't going to make me think twice about keeping that plan.

Exactly

Agreed although a long winded way of saying it...

Does this include the unlimited data plan for the iPad? I'm still grandfathered in on that.

Depends on where you live and travel. AT&T is the only one of the four carriers who isn't actively rolling out Carrier Aggregation this year. Rolling it out only in Chicago doesn't count. Their US "upgrade" budget is barely higher than T-Mobile's (because almost half of their money is going to Mexico rollouts this year).

In the 2nd largest metropolitan area in the US T-Mobile is often preferable. And in much of the rest of the state. So it depends where you are.

I have much more respect for Sprint than AT&T ATM - at least the places which are getting upgrades or good coverage are fast.

Funny thing about right and wrong. If you are wrong, but don't get excessive, you get away with it just like it was right.

Just saying.....thanks to inflation, $30 seven years ago is now about $34.50 nowadays.....

Good point. I've had an AT&T unlimited plan since day 1 of the iPhone. Still have it, still happy with it, no thought of changing, and as you say, going from $30 to $35 doesn't bother me.

I was starting to get frustrated by the idea of the 5GB throttling cap on what is supposedly unlimited, but as noted above, the recent increase to 22GB makes it a hypothetical limitation at worst.

I do think it's ridiculous to still have to pay for a separate SMS plan and that unlimited data plans don't allow for tethering. Data is data - only the total amount used should matter.

I'm actually amazed there still is an unlimited plan on ATT that is grandfathered. This has gone on longer than I expected. I knew/know one day a decision will need to be made.
Darn those pesky consumer protections laws and that evil gub'mint FTC and Justice Department for enforcing them. Why, just because a going concern advertised an unlimited unrevokable benefit and used those features to sell the product why should it be held to those terms seven loooong years later?

Some nutters actually believe this just because of gimmicks or the few places the signal is better provided you don't travel much lol

I'm totally Team ATT btw
And a mostly satisfied customer

Oh and to the ATT haters

Now...what if they raise 20 dollars more for unlimited? People will still take that beating. :D

We totally knew this was coming, and it's only $5. Kind of a no-brainer to keep it.
Brilliant on AT&T's part, it's a reasonable price increase, most with unlimited will (probably) keep it.
Any idea on the numbers? Is this 100,000 lines? or 1,000,000?

I don't think my bill has gone up at all in 6(?) years (until now).

ACTUALLY, my bill has gone DOWN. With the free A-List and addition of unlimited mobile to mobile (for any cell company) I've been able to lower my plan minutes and that has saved $20 a month. Plus, the unlimited texting/M2M dropped $10 a month.

Can't complain...
Gary

who needs A-List and unlimited mobile to mobile? AT&T gave unlimited anytime minutes to legacy family plans.

Drama much? Once contracts end - they aren't required to keep you on unlimited. Only while under a contract. So after 2+ years, most people could have been removed from an unlimited plan - and if they decide to do away with theirs, it will take appx 2 years to go into full effect. But it can happen and it's perfectly legal.

My kids and I still have the unlimited data plan with AT&T and I plan on keeping it as long as possible.

I do have a more typical plan for other other family members and for my iPad (so there are tethering options if necessary), but it's nice not having to worry about getting dinged with data usage bumps every month with our phones.

If you can get a few family members together, that is by far the best way to save on AT&T. I am paying around $250 a month for 6 devices and 30GB of data. I'm a pretty heavy user, and so are 2 other users and we rarely get close to 20GB a month, and with the rollover every month, we usually have around 40Gb of available use for a heavy month. I've never even hit 30GB.

This thread is about AT&T. Are you sure you aren't confusing this with an AT-AT?
Importantly, they are two different things. One is said to be a huge destructive machine that tramples upon the small and defenceless, making lives a misery across the galaxy. The other is an AT-AT, a made-up thing out of the Star Wars films.
You know, I'm thinking about those things, and when I first saw them (at 11 years old), I thought, "Why would anyone invent something like this?" High enter of gravity, reliant on all 4 legs to stay up, no rear laser turrets, and inherently unstable. I can only imagine what the ride in back was like... I hope they had barf bags for the Stormtroopers.

AT&T screwing over their customers, nothing new here guys.

Because them increasing price by the lowest amount compared others increasing and having a more transparent cap vs others using complex mystery algorithms whilst being the last holdout to increase price is totally screwing their customers.

They're by NO Means perfect but in this case they're being quite reasonable and giving ample warning
