So I bought some iPhone 8’s in good condition for trade in. The model is the Japanese model. Is that a big deal? Can I still trade them in? They are unlocked with clean IMEIs.

Has anyone started the process yet? Does it reflect the full $800 upfront? I'm overthinking this per usual.

Congratulations on your new iPhone. Because you’ve purchased at Apple with an AT&T Installment Plan, you may be eligible for the AT&T Special Trade-in Offer. Here’s what to do next to get the offer:
  1. Before you power on your new iPhone, confirm you’re on an eligible AT&T data plan. You can contact AT&T or use the myAT&T app. If your data plan is not eligible, you can upgrade your plan anytime before powering on your new iPhone.
  2. Within 30 days of powering on your new iPhone, trade in your eligible smartphone* directly with AT&T online at tradein.att.com or at an AT&T Store near you. Make sure to use code "TRADEINOFFER20" when you trade in.
Your trade-in value will be applied to your AT&T bill in the form of monthly credits. These monthly bill credits will begin to be applied within three billing cycles, and will continue for the remainder of your AT&T Installment Plan term**.
If you have any questions about the offer or about the trade-in process, please contact AT&T online or call 1-800-288-2020.

After seeing the unboxing of the Blue 12, I want to change colors on my AT&T preorder but want a phone come Friday. My AT&T order says "preparing to ship." Should I try to cancel now, or wait to receive it and then return? Does AT&T charge a restocking fee on unopened phones? My preference is to order from Best Buy as they still have release day in-store pickup.

It's as that email described: You get a bill credit each month (30 x 26.67). You most definitely don't get it up front.

Mike
Sorry, I meant to ask does the trade in confirmation give you the full promised value information up front. ie: 800 over 30 months.

I didn't receive anything like that from AT&T. I didn't even receive the email you got when ordering through Apple. But I did have to go through steps describing my trade (e.g., that it works, is not on a payment plan, screen condition, ect.) and before checking out it showed the phone cost as zero due to the trade. Still, I think AT&T could have done a much better job of communicating this offer, post sale. The offer is all over AT&T's app and website yet my confirmation emails make no mention of it, and act like I am paying full price with no trade.

If you order online and return via mail, they do NOT charge a restocking fee. Trust me - I’ve done a few returns this year, and the store worked also verified it.

If you bring it to a store, you will get your credit quickly, but you will pay the restocking fee.

Can anyone help me wrap my head around a trade in decision? I'm debating if it's smart to spend $400 on two iPhone 8's so I can trade them in to get the 800 dollar credit.

ATT will only accept 8's and up for the 800 dollar credit. Since I'm buying 2 phones (a 256 pro at $1099, a 128 12 at $899), I was going to buy 2 iPhone 8's strictly to trade them in.

My rationale, is that I'm getting $1600 dollar trade in credits, which is a no brainer right? since I'll still be up $1200 after I buy the phones to trade in.

Am I over thinking this? I know I'll be down 400 in the short term, but I'll save a lot over 2 years.

This is an easy decision for people that (1) don't upgrade annually (2) people that are not leaving AT&T in the next 30 months. I bought two refurbished iPhone 8's off Target online for $300 each and will get $800 in bill credits in return (free iPhone 12's). I'm upgrading two iPhone 7's on my account (parents) that won't need to upgrade before the 30 months of credits ends.
Simply put: spending $600 to get two phones for free that will be worth more than $600 combined after 30 months of use (net positive).

What makes it complicated is if a prepaid plan was available at enough of a discount that you could have made up the credits that way. hard to tell without knowing n ber of limes, etc.

Thanks so much, I don't plan on upgrading for a long time, I'm coming from an iphone 7 myself, so i plan on waiting a long time.

So I might do this after all after talking to AT&T. I have an aversion to any debt, so we owe no one. I found you can pay up front any amount over $800 and then your payment will be zero for 30 months. An iPhone 12 Pro Max 512 Gb would be $600 plus tax up front. Awesome deal!

Hmmm, this sounds intriguing. Can it be done after the fact? I already preordered an 12 Pro 128gb - AT&T Installment Plan with $0 down.

I don’t know. Would have to ask AT&T or just cancel and order again.

I pre-ordered the pro. It should be here Friday. So can I still do this,? Its up to $800 for trade in? I have an XR. plus a $200 card,?

Could you elaborate more on this? I want to do the trade in but don't want to pay for 2.5 years, I can do one time payment.

That option does not change the length of term to receive the credits. Its just paying the difference in cost of the phone above $800 as a down payment, so say $199 for the 128gb 12 Pro. This way you only owe the $800 and with the $800 in credits, your monthly pmt will net to zero. Still paying the same amount over the course of time.

Hold up. I can trade in my iPhone 8 Plus (which I paid off) and get $800 in credits for it to use towards a new 11 Pro Max??? So essentially paying $200 for the 11 Pro Max over a 30 month period?? (Also 12 Pro Max is excluded from this offer, right??)

Yes, $800 trade-in credit (paid over 30months) for the 11 Pro Max.
They’re not taking orders yet for the 12 Pro Max but the current offer says only $700 in trade-in credits.
Maybe that will change by the time they actually start taking orders.
