Right after the earthquake last year in LA, everybody started using their phones and all major carriers were strained so people couldn't get through. So yeah it would work.

But if you actually got enough people to do this for an hour, I guarantee you'll have at least one customer with a life or death emergency that wouldn't be able to get help during that hour, making Dan Lyons look like a big *******.

That person will sue Dan Lyons for damage that he is duly responsible for.

you don't sound too fortunate - you sound pretty miserable.
seems capitalism and freedom are giving you Unlimited high blood pressure and maybe an ulcer :)

take care

Oh, just the opposite! I am of wonderful health and can't be a happier person :)

And with capitalism and freedom, if I had high blood pressure and an ulcer, I could go see whatever doctor I want and not be put in a queue for months on end.

As Yakov Smirnoff said, "What a Country!!"

Keep breathing in that freedom, my socialist friends :)

It's not irresponsible to use your data whenever you want.

As far as I'm concerned, if I wanted to run my most data intensive app all day every day I shouldn't be penalized. The word, "Unlimited" means "to no end." It's false advertisement if there's some fine print stating otherwise. And the brochure that I have from my recent 3GS purchase has no such asterisk stating otherwise.

I'm not going to participate, simply because I don't want to run out of battery by the end of the day for stupid reasons. But if AT&T doesn't like people utilizing their "UNLIMITED" data packages, then they should redefine what the plan details and make people aware of it.

If their network can't theoretically handle that many people at once, then they should start using some of those profits to improve it immediately. We certainly do pay enough, sheesh.

AT&T is right about this one. This is childish and irresponsible putting lots of people in danger. Think about those who will need to use the network to call 911.

Not a good idea!

Bad enough when our prick politicians say it, but...

If one more moron uses that idiotic and most useless of phrase "speak truth to power", I'll declare "Jihad" on their sorry ass! :p

Sure why not, sounds like a lot better idea than hiding our heads in the sand and worrying about upsetting the normal balance of life. With what is being proposed sounds a bit like the Boston Tea Party to me. Did they get their point across then?

You people really have no idea what real protesting is about. Such bold action jamming up a network. Real heros!
And still I have not read one sensible word as to how this will get the perceived problem fixed.
Cancel your contract. That is action. But hey then that would put you out and you wouldn't want to do that would you.

It's morally and fiscally irresponsible for AT&T in my opinion to oversell their market in the first place. If their network can't handle that many phones at once, then they shouldn't have sold that many phones... Plain and simple.

OR alternatively, the fact that all the customers can't simultaneously use their service at once should be included in the terms of service. Which it currently isn't, at least to my knowledge.

By the way, if anyone is going to start personally attacking me, I won't see it because I'm not checking this thread again. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time. Because I don't really give a darn either way :D. Hope you enjoyed my two cents.

its unfortunate that this might not gain enough steam to actually send a message to AT&T that they cannot sit complacently behind all of their iphone sales and leave the network crippled.

of course, in some markets, some might ask how this day will be different from any other with AT&T's service.

fortunately i do not have too many problems where i live and primarily use the iphone while on a wifi network anyways or for texting...

You're right, most do pay enough for the data they use, probably to much. I see nothing wrong with changing the plan so the 5% of people using 75% of the data, or whatever the figures turn out to be actually pay for the 75% they use.

Just switch networks if you're on AT&T and you're dissatisfied with it.

If you MUST use an iPhone then jailbreak it and use it with someone else.

What a thought ;o

Unlimited

The plan for iphone include unlimited internet so why not?

If AT&T dont want this they should not bundle iPhone with it.

They have been working on improving their network. But, once again, "immediately" is easily and always prolonged because of barriers that local and national governments have erected.

so you can only think of two possibilities?
hide head in sand or take part in naughty schoolboy prank.
you enjoy speaking of you balls, not much mention of you brains.

how 'bout starting a facebook group against ATT? Now, that will really scare the living daylights out of them. right?

and 20 years after the end of the soviet union you are still stuck in "either capitalism or socialism"? seems you haven't lived in many countries outside of the US, have you?
(yes, i live in europe, i am freelance, earn as much money as i want, educate my kids any way i want, and .... surprise: have never waited longer than 1 (one) day for a visit to any doctor. and surprise: i happily pay into state insurance, helps provide health cover me AND for those less fortunate than myself. I wonder why life expectancy in the USA is lagging behind all those dreadful socialist countries... ? even cuba is ahead of you :) )

It's amazing how everyone thinks that if the iPhone comes to Verizon than all network problems will magically be fixed. Don't you think if the entire iPhone user base switched to Verizon it would be alright. I doubt it, american wireless companies are all the same and if you had that many people migrate over they would have many of the same problems. Companies across the board aren't prepared for the data usage that phones it has raised 300% this year alone. And even tho Verizon has spent and prepared a lot better than ATT has we would feel the change I guarentee it. Verizon with the iPhone is the answer to this problem but it would be a start.

You're in europe... again, you're welcome for the freedoms you have. Aren't you glad you don't live under communism because a wonderful country won the Cold War? I'm sure your kids being educated in a non-communist country and you being able to go to a doctor in one day in a non-communist country are wonderful things for you. You even get to choose to work freelance instead of being told what you are going to do from birth. Freedom is wonderful! Almost intoxicating! Can we agree on that??

Now, if you get to choose whether you pay into state run health care, then that is still freedom, as long as there exists other choices. It's still capitalism. If you are forced to pay into that system, where those less fortunate use your money without some form of representation on your part, then that is socialism (involuntary redistribution of wealth). If i want to help those less fortunate (and boy do I), I want it to be voluntary transfer of wealth, not forced. Forced means the gov't gets to decide winners and losers instead most everyone having at least the chance to win.

And to bring this discussion full circle, I enjoy the freedom of being able to choose whatever phone service I want, and if the restrictions are more than i want to pay for, then I switch companies! I love freedom!

So enjoy what freedoms you have. Maybe even fight for more freedoms... can't hurt, can it? I wish you all the best! :D

I thought that if a cell phone didn't have service that if you dialed 911, it would find the nearest tower of any other service provider. I may be wrong though.

anyone that does this, or thinks this is a good idea, is a ****ing moron.

how does this benefit anyone, aside from ****ing up my service for calls i need to make anyway? its bad enough being on ATT in NYC, how does making it worse seem like a good idea.....? what will it accomplish/prove?

idiots.

This is a fantastic idea! When one of my enemies angers or slights me, my favorite pastime is taking revenge by gathering my closest friends and kicking each one of them square in the balls! Who wouldn't love to do that?

i have dropped 1 call since 2007. and seeing my friends with version i dare not go near any of their phones. not to mention how much versions phones break

same on me? ya shame on me for having 5 bars on att and 1-0 on version? shame on me for paying $55 a month and getting around 15- 25 gigs of data a month but on versions horrible network that has 1 bar of nothing 1000$+ dollars a month. no shame on you.
Ah, I see Randall L. Stephenson's grammatically and factually challenged son started posting here...:rolleyes:
To those who say they might miss an important call during the protest, consider this....

A client called back in October and left a voice mail to let me know she wanted to hire me to photograph her wedding, $1800. But Att failed to deliver that voice mail AND 7 OTHERS for an entire month! I actually didnt receive it until TWO DAYS after her wedding! No missed call notices or anything! I'm not the only one this has happened too, either.

And before you say dont rely on a cell phone for your business, In my particular set of circumstances (to long to go into here) I have too.

Switching to Verizon and the Droid in January.

I rather like the idea....with any luck, it will grab enough media attention to force ATT to get things working better.

AT&T needs to fix their network instead of crying all over the place.

That is just the problem, AT&T doesn't get it. They throw a few million here and there to try to catch up. They are not forward thinking as to how they will succeed with worsening conditions. The bottom line is AT&T really doesn't know how to think for the future.

AT&T is probably already content with losing exclusivity with the iPhone. And that means that their network will probably scale back in demand. AT&T as a brand is just horrible and getting worse. I will switch to Verizon the day an iPhone becomes available... I don't care about cancellation costs or switching costs or anything. I want a damn phone that works! The iPhone is great, but AT&T is totally ruining the user experience that Apple has laid out for iPhone users.
