From my experience, you don't need to wait til you get the email to have your iPhone unlocked. I submitted an unlock request on Apr 9, 2012 5:58:15 PM EST and my phone was successfully unlocked by iTunes on April 11th around 9PM. I never got an email but I just kept plugging my iPhone in every hour on April 11th and it eventually went from saying my sim was incompatible to your iphone was successfully unlocked. Still have yet to get the email.

You don't need to constantly restore to get the unlock success screen. What I did was restore the iPhone but never activated it. I put in a T-Mobile sim and plugged it into my computer to check if it has been successfully unlocked yet.
Does the sim card you plug in have to have service on it to check? or can it be a non active sim card from tmobile?

so i just got off the phone with att and originally they told me 72 hours, and now they said wait till the 17th. im not mad or anything, i just want to know how do they prioritize the IMEIs and which ones get unlocked

They appear to be prioritizing people who currently have an AT&T postpaid account. I think that's fair since they are the ones paying AT&T every month.

So I contacted AT&T tech support and they tried to unlock my iPhone 4. They said they get an error message that my IMEI is not in Apple's database. He said I should contact Apple. Anyone else with this problem?

I used an activated sim so I can't confirm if an inactive sim will work.

wait so basically im at the screen where it says "activate your iphone with a sim" do i basically just keep plugging my tmobile sim in and out and checking to see if it will activate?

Call your previous employer? I kept my number as I brought it over from a personal AT&T account prior. Did you give them your IMEI number? I don't see why the previous number would matter as you are now without a contract.

that´s right. i gave him my IMEI and then he pass me to Corporate DEpt. or something like that i suppose to verify but as you said why that matter. i´ll see. thank.

Well, it's not like other companies make their own iphones too. Only apple makes the iphones. So if it is not in their database, the fault lies in apple.

I have a peculiar problem. I had the unlock ticket opened with ATT on 4/10. Got an email today saying " The service commitment for this iPhone has not been completed." even though I bought this phone from ATT on launch day in 2010.

Only issue is my original phone had problems and so apple store replaced it with a new one July last year. I put the unlock request for this replaced phone.

What should I do now, wait till June to get it unlocked? Any suggestions?

can anyone who got their iphone from ebay or cragislist and doesn't personally know the person who bought the iphone their unlocking, tell me the process of what they said to the AT&T rep to get their iphone unlocked? I told them i bought them off of ebay and they said no, another said they need a proof of purcahse, but im failing to even get a case submitted... Can anyone pleaseee help?

Today, I unlocked an old 3G I had laying around. Took about 10 minutes on the phone. Got the email about 10 minutes after the call ended. Restored with an old ATT SIM that is not active, and I received the your phone is unlocked message. Super easy and I'll be ready when I go to Spain in May now.

I told the representative that I bought the iPhone in eBay. He asked me for proof of purchase which I send it to a fax number they provided. I have an open case number and I am waiting for the email. I did the procedure on monday april 11

Just called told them that i bought it from ebay and they opend case. 9th time :)

Quick question - Most of the unlocks are happening to the phones that are bought on ebay, cowboom, ETF paid, upgraded to 4S etc. Are anyone actually gettling unlocks for the phones (iphone 4) purchased at ATT on the launch day in June 2010? Those phones will be still under contracts until June 2012. Just wondering?

Success!

Just for the record, i successfully managed to get AT&T to unlock my 3GS and Original iPhone as well as my wife's iPhone 4 (which they initially told me could not be done over the phone).

The unlock was requested on Sunday (Apr 8th) and completed today (Apr 12th).

i called about mine which the case was submitted on tuesday 4/10 and it says it has a resolution date of 4/18... :p anyone else check when their case is supposed to be resolved?

I also got the e-mail saying my phone has been unlocked. I haven't had a chance to run the restore yet, but I'm hopeful!

i also got the email. I was able to activate my two iphone 4 with a tmobile sim but the sims aren't active so i dont know how to test. But i notice when you go to general, about, and scroll down next to carrier it says :carrier 12.0.. Does this mean its unlocked??? because i remember before it used to say att 11.0 or something like that? anyone know?

I purchased my iPhone 4 in November 2010, didn't pay ETF and I just got it unlocked. I had it replaced by Apple twice though.

I was getting worried.

I was getting worried about the time that it was taking for my unlock confirmation e-mail.
Then I decided to contact AT&T tonight:

Me: And I can't call, because I'm in Brazil
Rep: That was the time frame we were given at the beginning, but now with the large amount of requests for the unlock codes, it is now taking 5-7 days.

Rep: For your information, you can call toll free at +1 916 843 4685
Me: Can you tell the AT&T technical support take a look at my case number again?
Rep: It is a process for unlocking the iPhones, until Apple completes the request, the iPhone cannot be unlocked.
Me: Ok, sorry
Me: Is that Apple's fault? I didn't know
Me: sorry, I'll try to contact Apple then
Rep: No, it is not anybodys fault, it is just the process we have to go thru.
Me: It's Ok.
Me: I'll wait more 2 days if I get my e-mail
Rep: I'm not sure by calling Apple they will expedite the process.
Me: If I don't get an e-mail in 7 days what I have to do?
Rep: I can check on your case number for the date of resolution.
Me: OK
Me: wait a second
Me: CMxxxxxxxx_xxxxxxxx
Rep: The expected date of resolution is April 17, 2012
