I wonder if that message that the phone is unlocked only appears once? Say you restore a second time, would the message appear again? Also, does it have to be a restore from itunes? I am now backed up completely on iCloud, how's the process on that? Or do I have to backup to itunes/pc/mac for the mean time?

I can confirm that the message will appear as many times as you restore it. The iPhone itself does not produce a message if you do not go through the iTunes process but if it's unlocked it should accept the carrier's SIM.

My iphone 4 was unlocked yesterday and I got the congratulations message. I tested it with a T-mobile sim card worked fine. rebooted phone multiple times to test it and it is still unlocked. Tried restoring it one more time this morning, but did not get the congratulations message, but my phone is still unlocked. Tested with T-mobile sim card again. So I am not sure that it gives that message everytime. But I did get a screen capture first time it gave me the message.

My iphone 4 is unlocked for 5 days but when i called att they said that my case is still pending. Never got the massage in iTunes???

Okay, I'm a little lost here.

I went through the unlock process after getting my email. Restoring my phone etc. But I have not received the unlock message through iTunes.. Does it matter that I'm using a GoPhone sim inside the phone while trying the unlock process?

I even called back AT&T to make sure the IMEI was the same and to make sure it was unlocked but nothing. I just really want to switch to T-Mobile today. I get 0-2 bars in my house of service from AT&T and its really annoying. I have a T-Mobile cell tower right up the street from my house. I actually read through most of the pages but havent found anything. I even restored multiple times. I'm so close! Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same thing happen. What is going on is ATT approved the unlock and sent your IMEI to Apple to be white-listed. Apple simply has not added you to the white-list yet. I just waited till about 20 hours after I received my email and then I got the message :)

Yup. Unlimited. No throttling. I'm all in.

Cry me a river. Network infrastructure's not my problem. And what do I care how fast AT&T is if I can only use so much of it?

Actually, I did. And I don't care.

Aww, you mean the network can't handle everyone because you didn't invest enough in network infrastructure? :( I'll take pity and accept your data caps for the greater good.. NOT!!

Yeah, that's a great reason to keep paying a crappy company more of my money: because everyone else sucks too.

Its logic like yours that keeps draconian entities like AT&T in business. Have fun paying through the nose while making pathetic justifications like these.

I'm jealous. (No sarcasm.)

LOL, your comments make NO SENSE. They shouldn't allow 7 year olds on this board. Its past your bedtime Mr. Fusion.

I just found out about AT&T offering to do this a few days ago. I called AT&T and though I am not a customer with them and never have been I just asked if they could unlock my iphone 4. They asked if it had ever been in use on their network and I said yes, but I got it off ebay. They asked for imei and ran it and said everything looked good and they submitted my case, gave me case # in case I needed to check status. Told me within 48 hours I should receive an email. That was april 10th. Today, April 14th, I got the email. It just said to restore through itunes and it would be unlocked.

I attempted to restore and kept the 3194 error with itunes. Tried several things to fix it including restore fix with tiny umbrella, resetting sync history in itunes and warnings and cache. What worked was updating to newest itunes, lol.

It restored fine but unfortunately, I don't have a micro sim to install to test it out. I am using a 3gs with tmobile since the 4 has been locked and its standard sim size. I can't risk cutting it since I dont have an adapter if it doesnt work to fit it back in the 3gs. Guess all I can do is go into tmobile store and get them to put a working sim in to test and if it is indeed unlocked, I can either cut my sim or request a micro from t-mobile.

Either way, my wait time for the email (whether this works or not for me) was 4 days.

i just received my email today but i unlocked my iphone yesterday. if you're still waiting for the email I would suggest just synching with iTunes whats the worst that could happen?

@rponte: if you are jailbroken on ios 5.0.1 then all you have to do is run the latest redsn0w and click deactivate or the method that I used was sam I just deactivated with it...then removed my sim plugged my phone to macbook and got the unlock message. then put your sim in and do a hard reset.

@jackson1714: without a sim inserted, iTunes keeps saying: no sim card. Please insert a sim.

Have two iPhone 4's , using gevey sim . Called up customer care and told them that I got these phones from US when I was visiting, off contract. She verified the iemi no and confirmed that I am eligible for an unlock. Never expected it... But got case numbers for both and now waiting for 5-7 days as per her... Hopefully it comes thru before that.

I got both my iphone 4 unlocked today. I first attempted the request through chat and the person I was chatting with told me I can only get one of them unlocked and the other one, they were unable to and it was out of their control. They did not explain why even when I asked. I decided to call AT&T and spoke with a very nice and accommodating customer service rep and explained to her my situation. She insisted we should still try to see what comes up and after she checked, she said the iPhone was unlockable and sent the request. She sent me the email with the unlock instruction and waited with me on the phone until I confirmed that I got the email. She said I can try to restore it at that moment and it should be unlocked or it might take a few hours. When I got off the phone with her, I did the restore on both phones and voila, unlocked :D I thought I would have to wait a few days because the chat representative told me 5-7 days. So for those you get a decline, call again and again. Those who get approved, I'd check within a few hours or a day to see if it's unlocked. Don't wait for the email.

That seems to apply only (or mostly) to people who have (or had) AT&T accounts. I've never had an AT&T account. I called last Monday late in the morning (EDT) to create cases and have tried deactivating and using a non-AT&T SIM almost everyday for the last three days and it's still not unlocked. The resolution date given to me was April 17. So it looks like I'd have to wait until then.

How did you actually reach the ATT representative who has the ability to *instantly* unlock your iPhone? Which number didi you dial, then press what? And what did you say to them so they route you to that rep?

Same boat. I suspect that even until April 17, we may receive no response. And there is no way to complain if that happens. We can only request again.

Sorry, I should clarify, yes I do have an ATT account.

I have a business account with them so my call got routed to their business department when I dialed 611 from my phone. I told them I initially started the unlock process through chat but was informed only one can be unlocked and the other cannot and was beyond the chat representative's control. I told the business rep that the phones were purchased off eBay and that if they needed proof of purchase, I can provide the eBay transaction history. The business rep first checked if I'm qualified for the unlock and after confirmation she routed me to the tech department. From there, I repeated my story above and the tech rep checked if the phones can be unlocked (not tied to a contract) and when she confirmed that both were unlockable, she went ahead with the process. But again, I first attempted the unlock process through ATT's chat but that rep informed me only one was unlockable and that it would take 5-7 business days. I guess it depends who you get when you call. Some are accommodating and detailed while others just go by the book and try to do the process quickly.

It seems that if you have an ATT account, the unlock process is a lot quicker than 5-7 business days. But most representatives just tell you to wait that long and wait for the email because maybe it's the protocol? I'm not sure. I would just go ahead with the restore a few hours (or in my case, right after my call with ATT) after they send the unlock request. When I did the restore, I didn't get the "Congratulations" message on iTunes, the only way I found out was when I popped in a T-Mobile sim card.

been following this thread for a few days

A bit of background: I have an iPhone 4 purchased on launch day. I moved to europe and had a mix up with my dad about canceling the account. We both thought the other had done so and long story short, it ended up almost going to collections before he finally was notified of the past due balance, and he paid them off and are no longer under contract. My old ATT login doesn't work anymore.

I chatted with an ATT tech on tuesday morning. I found by going into a chat about my login troubles, I could then relay my issue and was then connected to a tech person. They reviewed the case and said that I should be eligible since everything was paid. I was told, "24-48 hours, but it may be even a bit longer" before i receive and email with the instructions.

I waited 3 days and decided to restore and pop in my vodafone sim, reading how others after a fews days had tried the unlock process prior to receiving emails with success.

Alas, for me it still says that I need to put in a SIM compatible with my carrier or whatever. So obviously it's still locked. I guess I'll just wait a few mored days, trying every once in a while to plug it in and see if it changes. The phone is currently deactivated with the foreign sim inserted.

My case number for unlock is 39167xxx. Anyone got unlocked after this number? I requested on 11th and still no email. Some people are saying they get a confirmation mail immedietly after call. But I didn't get any email. Is that okay? When I asked if am eligible for unlock, he said I need to wait till April 19th. Anyone got unlocked who requested on April 11th or after?

Your case number or the date/time when you requested do not matter. They're not doing it in sequence. If you have an AT&T account, then your request has a very good chance of getting done in a few minutes or within a couple of days. Even there, requests over chat and requests by business customers seem to get done quicker, followed by requests over the phone by customers. If you do not have an AT&T account, then it's very likely that your request goes to the bottom of their bucket and has a long wait time.

Also, if you call them, they don't send any emails about the case number or any updates on the case. In your case, you just have to wait till April 19 and if you don't get an email from them by then, call them again.

Successful unlock

Hi all...another successful unlock report here.

Bought a used 2g from ebay last year for travelling purposes so i could baby my iPhone 4.

Anyways, it was never jboken.

Called last tuesday. Told em im not att customer and bought it off ebay. They asked for imei and my email.

I was waiting fr an email for the rest of the week...but no email... So i decided to fire it up in itunes regardless....and lo and behold.."congratulations your iPhne is unlocked!" :))))

So i bouught a $3 tmobile sim actvation kit for prepaid...and it works. I have $2 initial on the sim card before i have to buy more, but since i dont ntend on using tmobile nor the 2g at home, i will just let it sit there till my next overseas trip:))))

So my really only main point s if your waitng for an email for 4 or more days, fire up itunes anyway, and yo may be pleasantly surprised :)))
