AT&T's iPhone 3G Data Plan and No Longer Revenue Sharing

well if your 83 included 1500 sms (which is the $30 iphone data+1500 txt im assuming) then the new plan will be $30 for iphone data only, then $15 for 1500 text... sorry to dissapoint on that one. might as well pay the extra 5 and get UNL txt

once again, where are you getting this from??

maybe i'm overly tired, but i don't see any mention of anything sms-related going up in price.

could you please point me to where it says that 1500 sms's will now be $15 instead of $10?

OK...I apologize if this is a repeat. I am wondering is the $199 price a flat price even if you are NOT eligible for an at&t upgrade and just want to purchase the phone? Thank you.

Do your own legwork. Its a fact.

Gee....

don't know why I am always surprised of all the anger here. Perhaps it's the idea of this time it is for a $10 increase. Oh well... Myself, I am quite happy with the new deal and will be buying 2 on the 11th. Yes, I could do all kind of things to get a 'better' deal or value, however, the iphone 3G package is worth a few extra bucks. Frankly, I passed on the 1st revision because of the edge network. 3G is very nice, and so are the many large and small improvements. One more thing... $199 is a sweet spot!:)

I guess nothing is being uttered from the lips of the people who were actually laughing at those who purchased the first generation iPhone now huh? LOL.

Well, first it was because the iphone can not be unlocked, legally.:

There was an exemption to the DMCA made in 2006 specifically allowing unlocking cell phones:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIM_lock

The previous iPhone could be unlocked without ever signing a Eula or contract with either AT&T or Apple so I don't see how it was or is illegal. The only argument you could make is that by buying the phone you are implicitly agreeing to activate the phone on AT&T but I'm unsure of how well that argument would hold up in court. In any case, as the law stands unlocking cell phones in the US is legal to my knowledge.

NO, that IS the upgraded price.... $199 is the 2yr discounted price, you just cant buy it at retail price w/ no discount, you have to sign the agreement and get the discount.

There is no discount price. Its $199 and $299 for everybody.

And after someone hacks this so you can tether it up to a laptop, that will make the cost seem like a steal.

Payg

Is the new iPhone going to be available as PAYG? And if, I'm already a PAYG iPhone G1 owner is there a cost to transfer over when activating other than transfering my SIM card?

Think about this...

79.99/mo * 24 mos + $199 + Sales tax (9%) +$99 mobile me * 2 = ~$2500

I'd rather have a 32gb ipod touch, a dingy phone with no internet, and a new macbook pro... and no ***** subscriptions or contracts... and get on with life.

hahahaha

Another case of bad math here in the "dumb as a rock" forum... (note I am calling the forum 'dumb as a rock', as to not get banned for a personal insult, which you are probably used to getting quite often anyway)

back to the topic:

New iPod Touch = $499.00 US
New MacBook Pro = $1999.00 US
Cheapo phone @$39.00 US (24 months) = $936.00

Without tax you are already at $3,434.00... Do you see the problem with your math yet?

Please help us all by finding the nearest wall and just running straight at it.

I think your real beef isn't so much that the prices are high, because, well, they're not. Your real beef is that the dollar is pathetically weak. The cheapest plan you can get over here in the UK is $70/mth, and people are pretty happy with its value.

I'm a medical student with a 9-5 study day (so living of the student loan), and I still find the money to live in Central London, go out a lot eating and drinking, and afford a 3G iPhone. Oh, and we have higher taxes.

Hopefully your economic gloom won't last too long. I've met loads of American tourists during clinic work (they get free treatment on the NHS), and they can't afford to do anything in the UK because of the strength of the pound/weakness of the dollar.

More than that for me. For my wife and I to get an iPhone, our monthly will go from $87 to $147. That's an insane jump in price. Half again the amount we pay for home DSL service. Just to get phone data for us. I wish Apple hadn't lowered the price and got AT&T to keep the old prices. Would have saved good money in the long run. Not sure what I'll do now. Other than think about it for a while.

And at the same time the car manufacturer doesn't lock you into buying gas from one manufacturer or insurance carrier for that matter.

If you buy a 3G iPhone in the U.S. and want to take advantages of the features that justify buying a 3G iPhone in the first place, you're locked into AT&T's data plan rates. You can't comparison shop for services. The car analogy is therefore a poor one because a car manufacturer doesn't lock you into one insurance company or one gas company.
This is irrelevant to the issue of what the hardware costs. The variety of your pricing options has no bearing on the fact that Apple is selling only one thing: the device.

Just because you're required to choose from limited options does not change the fact that the price of the handset has gone down, and no one made any representation about TCO.

While there is undoubtedly negotiation between the two, Apple does not control the pricing of the plan, the availability of options, or any other factor. Anyone who believed unlimited 3G data would be made available at the same price as EDGE is not familiar with how data pricing works. Dropping the SMS package is probably a fair trade for the $200 subsidy, especially since many users simply don't use SMS much.

The man does have a point.

I am not quite sure how to read what you say... what do you mean?

I have a first gen iPhone, and have never regretted having it. I still like it better because of the aluminum back. I think that it is more elegant. Not sure that I want a new iphone yet...

Don't laugh too hard.

Hillary, is that you?

Who will be there to stop you from going to gitmo or being railroaded into jail.

Anyone remember the political witch hunts of the not so distant past? Yes, it can happen here. Enough politics...

Has anyone compared the rumors with the 'real thing'?

So much for it to be 'thicker'. Bigger. Metal. Cheaper (http://machinist.salon.com/).

Someone said that it would do 'video conferencing'. Will the real one do it?

Questions...

It seems that you are feeling good about yourself. Enjoy it.

Sorry, I meant...

Sorry, I meant 'Apple legally'.

Unlock your iphone and then potentially end up with a useless paperweight should be illegal but apparently it's not. THAT'S what I was referring to in my comment of unlocked legally...

Unnecessarily childish, and your math's wrong, too. He said a phone w/no data vs. an iphone w/data. That's a difference of $720 over 2 years. Not to mention texts, etc. That was the point. "New iPhone with all its features" vs. a featureless cell phone. He wasn't far off at all from your final cost there.
