If this rate doesn't include unlimited sms than it is udderly ridiculous! With unlimited text messaging won't that push the rates over 100 a month!? My contract just ended with sprint and I was so excited to switch to a 3G iphone but there is no way in hell that its gonna happen with these bloodsucking plans.

Did you also notice that now on the Apple website it is impossible to find the AT&T rates. With the first iPhone it would show the plans but now I can't find where they have that, if they even do.

They actually know EXACTLY what they are doing. At $399, people don't buy the iphone as an impulse buy. At $199, more people will. The average consumer cares only about the price here and now. When you buy a car, the dealer never tells you what the total price is. They focus on the "low monthly payments". Never mind that you will be paying that low payment for a gazillion months! The logic with the new iphone pricing is that people will buy it on impulse, sign the agreement, and by the time they figure out how much they are really paying, it is too late! They already have you locked in.

You're actually exactly true. I just studied this in social psychology its called foot in the door syndrome. Once you have bought the phone you will already see yourself as coming too far to go back

Oh yeah, I searched for a half hour. I really hope AT&T suffers from this.

THEN DON'T GET THE ***** NEW IPHONE

news flash dude. you don't need an iphone to call someone or go on the internet. other phones do it, in a not so great way, but you pay less.

amen !!!

If you cant afford to get the phone, then DONT get it ! SIMPLE !

Sick of people whining about the damn price... if they announced the phone at 499, people would still be bitching and whining....

AT&T's iPhone 3G Data Plan and No Longer Revenue Sharing

AT&T has issued a press release providing additional details about service plans for the iPhone 3G in the U.S. First of all, AT&T confirmed that it remains the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone, which will be available starting on July 11th.

The new iPhones will cost $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB) with an unlimited 3G data plan costing $30/month. This is an increase from the current $20/month unlimited EDGE data plan for the 1st generation iPhone. Voice plans continue to start at $39.99, but no additional details are provided.

Meanwhile, AT&T reveals that Apple will no longer receive the revenue sharing from each users plans. It was highly publicized that AT&T paid Apple a portion of its monthly recurring service charges for each iPhone user. Under the new agreement, there is no revenue sharing. AT&T is presumably directing that money towards the $200 subsidy for the iPhone.

If you CAN afford it than don't whine about people who CAN'T. plain and simple...

Big deal its $10 more for data access OH NOOOOOO that means I can't get 2 starbucks coffees. Give me a break. If you can't afford it then don't get it.

Lol maybe you shouldn't be complaining about the cost of services when you have nothing to do with it? They upgraded their service, do you want that for free or something? Last time I checked when Apple upgrades their components in their computers they went up in price.

what are the chances we'll be able to tether our 3g iphones to our laptops and use the phone as a modem when we're on the go?

any chance of that??

edit: just saw another thread about this...please go ahead and yell at me now for not using the search function.

Apple UK seems like it's going to restrict consumers to buying only from O2 and Carphone Warehouse Stores (No Apple Stores or Online) - I suspect so they can force us to sign something obligating us to the contract. But maybe that means a discount?

Whatever it is it's certainly not good news for those hoping to unlock a shiny new 3G iPhone in the UK.

Please - this is not about "taxing" the network. We're already paying out of our bleeding noses for their service. It's insane that I HAVE to renew my contract to upgrade my phone and that in renewing I HAVE to agree to new terms that FORCE me to pay $10 more a month. It's not about the money even, it's not much, and I'm sure - yes I'll pay it. But it's a jerk of a thing to do, it's piss-poor customer service and it spits on loyal customers who already have a plan. Pathetic AT&T - pathetic.
I'm sorry, but what a bunch of candy-ass whiners ...

Every other AT&T customer with a PDA phone pays $30/month for data. PDA phone users on Verizon usually pay $45 or more for data. IPhone users had a nice deal for one year, now that deal is over in exchange for a subsidized price. Deal with it or get a regular cell phone.

to hell with apple

the new iphone is a HUGE disapointment. if it had the front camera video conf app then i could see paying the extra $10. but this is phone is the same as the the first iphone only with some stupid gps thing on it. and is the extra $10 really worth it? i mean, come on, with prices of everything going up, why would i want to pay more money for just a little faster internet?

Does Daddy pay for yours? This is a forum for people to express themselves. Some of us work hard for our money and $10 more a month is much more than it seems when you are paying rent, loans, car payments, gas, amongst many more bills.

According to Engadget, the data plan is now $30 a month extra on top of whatever your voice plan is! for businesses it is an additional $45!

HOLY CRAP!

I think ill be sticking with Tmobile after all!

Screw the iPhone!

Yeah, $30 on top of the voice plan for 3G. $10 than edge, for which the unlimited data currently is $20 on top of your voice plan.

would you please cite where you got this subsidized pricing info from? and if your sole purpose to comment on this thread is to call everyone else on it "candy-ass(wtf does that mean?) whiners" then don't you have better things to do with your time than insult random strangers for no reason?

GPS services on all other phones cost that much. Look up how much Telenav on the Blackberry costs.

Were talking close to $80/month for the base plan!

Not to mention I have to agree for another year of service.

If this holds true for existing customers I might wait and see what google offers with the android.
But with any Android phone you will still have to pay for a phone + data plan, which will cost the same if you pick AT&T or even more if you have the opportunity to pick Verizon. Not why iPhone users feel entitled to cheaper data plan than anyone else ...

I wouldnt be so sure. Apple's site stats the price "Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately." in the asterisk at the bottom

I would be interested in seeing how they enforce this, surely account checks wont be done in the apple store, so this may mean some sort of rebate on sign-up. Guess we will have to see.

From what I understand, the 3G iPhone doesn't physically have a radio that covers the band that T-Mobile's network runs on (apparently they are somewhat of an anomaly amongst GSM carriers).

No go on T-Mobile, it looks like.

I don't know about any of you, but i'm an iphone user form day1 and all this is GREAT news.

I'll be able to upgrade immediatley.

The rest of you can go to **** :D

what i am saying is, if it was something WORTH WILD to pay the extra $10 for like the video conf, then i wouldn't really mind, but there is nothing there except some stupid gps

Damn. I'll pay it, but I know of two people that want an iPhone bad and will NOT pay $30 a month for data. They thought $20 a month was sketchy and I kinda sold them on it (though it was balls slow), but $30 a month is going to push them not to buy. No data, no point in iPhone.

It sucks because I really want them to get an iPhone.
