No one that owns an iPhone now and is planning on upgrading is going to be eligible for an upgrade since their contract will not be up.
Not true. There was no subsidy on the first iPhone.
I am eligible for a subsidized contract and I bought mine last June.
Even if you were under contract you would just start a new term when buying the new iPhone.

Does Daddy pay for yours? This is a forum for people to express themselves. Some of us work hard for our money and $10 more a month is much more than it seems when you are paying rent, loans, car payments, gas, amongst many more bills.

Lol that was a good joke I guess? Does social security pay for yours?...
I have 2 jobs and I pay for college so lay off the "rich daddy" bs moron. Like I said before, they are offering a service and if you can't pay for it then you should switch to something you can afford.
Just because I want a Ferrari doesn't mean I should go $300000 in debt just to get one then complain about how much they cost.

Figure it this way...

Old iPhone was $400 new one is $200 = $200 discount.

Over life of contract you will pay $240 more in data costs than before.

$200 savings - $240 data expense = $40 more than other iPhone

Well said. But I'm afraid your post was too logical and sound for the complainers here... ;)

I should not have to pay more for a newer more advanced phone with more features. So there! NEENER NEENER I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!

Just data, no voice

Is it at all possible to just have the data plan and not the voice, the place I work for pays for my phone and i have unlimited voice with it? I really like the idea of an ipod touch with data everywhere and gps, but not the phone. Thanks in advance.

Every other AT&T customer with a PDA phone pays $30/month for data. PDA phone users on Verizon usually pay $45 or more for data. IPhone users had a nice deal for one year, now that deal is over in exchange for a subsidized price. Deal with it or get a regular cell phone.

Where as I pay $15/month for my Moto Q data usage on Sprint and that's for EVDO.

In the UK, the tariffs has stayed the same, and they've even introduced a new, lower one (£30.00 per month)
Tariffs in UK are £30.00, £35.00, £45.00 and £75.00 per month (inclusive of all taxes). All give unlimited data and 75, 600, 1200 and 3,000 minutes of talk time respectively. Inclusive Texts are 125 on lowest tariff and 500 on all others

On top of that, you get the 8GB for free at the £45.00 and £75.00 tariffs (£99.00 on others), or the 16GB for free on top tariff, £59.00 on £45 tariff and £159 on other two. Again, all those prices are inclusive of taxes, which means we actually get the iPhone cheaper in the UK than the USA (got to be a first for Apple!)

Per Gizmodo:

"We just talked to AT&T's President of National Distribution Glenn Lurie, who gave us all the new pricing and activation details for the iPhone 3G, which won't be getting special treatment anymore. It will be using all AT&T"s standard voice and data plans, which means $30 for unlimited 3G data for consumers, $45 for business users. Also, no in-home activation for iPhone 3G—it will have to be activated in store (at AT&T or Apple Store), which takes 10-12 minutes, meaning that first day line is going to SUCK. And you will have to camp out, since there won't be any online ordering at launch—and Glenn was mum on how many phones there'd be to go around."

$199/$299 ARE SUBSIDIZED PRICES with activation.

People the new low price is a SUBSIDIZED price. Not the full retail price. There must be some change in activation process to force you to activate with AT&T to get that low price! Otherwise I am sure if you just buy the phone you will pay more in an Apple Store or online.

Remember Jobs only said new low price (subsidized), not the only price point.

This is why AT&T is telling people like me we have to cancel our 1 year contract and start over for two years to get the SUBSIDIZED price!

I must say, I am sorely disappointed. Upwards of $90 for a month? My family shares four lines with 800 minutes at Sprint and that's what they pay.

Yes social security pays for mine. You should probably spend a few minutes researching what social security actually is. Secondly, I don't own one. This is why I can't justify going from a $40 cell bill to an $85. You fail, twice. And I'm sure it's worth it working 2 jobs paying for college and spending $85 a month for phone service. Way to put things into perspective.

I haven't finished reading through this thread. I'm sick over this. If this monthly price increase is true, today was a complete joke to us. The nerve of him to say he lowered the price of the phone because the number one reason someone didn't purchase was price. Then to not mention the service for it will go up!! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. No deal if we pay for it in the end. I just put my Touch on Ebay. Now i hope it doesn't sell. This is horrible news. I am really disturbed by this beyond belief.

so is the 199/299 pricing just walk into apple store and buy it or we have to activate it in store also?

ITS NOT SUBSIDIZED!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU GETTING THIS FROM?

FYI for anyone looking to get new 3G iPhone...

EDIT: anyone in the US getting the 3G iPhone

got a few email from work... heres some info for yall.

-data plan will be $30 for the 3G iPhone, no text included.... u can add text a la carte ($5-200, $15-1500, $20-UNL)

-iPhones will be activated in the store at the time of purchase, whether it is an upgrade or a new activation... then all your iTunes stuff u do at home or w/e

-Pricing shown ($199 & $299) are for new two year agreements for new customers or QUALIFIED upgrading customers renewing. Unlike the 2G iPhone you cant just get this one and have your agreement automatically renewed if you arent already eligable (BUT i will say whenever you come into the stores we are fairly easygoing on over riding that, assuming you are atleast one year into your agreement).

NOW as for existing 2G iphone owners.... depending on contractual status and payment history(on time ya know!!) and account is in good standing we will review the account for an early upgrade, and most likely let you upgrade to the new one...

jus a few things for now... will post more when i know more.

Imagine that, you're paying the same price as before for a newer, more advanced phone with more features. THE NERVE!

For the last time, $199/$299 is the retail price. Sheesh. You will however, have to sign a two-year contract before walking out of the store with one.

sucks to be an american...and totally awesome to be a brit!! im getting a free upgrade on my same contract :) loving it
