EDGE on new iPhone

Umm, I want a new iPhone with GPS, but I don't have 3G coverage in my rural area (nor is it planned). Can I stick with the cheaper EDGE data plan?

AT&T/Cingular's pricing has been static for years. When will the cell phone providers offer more minutes for less money?

what i am saying is, if it was something WORTH WILD to pay the extra $10 for like the video conf, then i wouldn't really mind, but there is nothing there except some stupid gps

Alright. Now we know you're 10 years old. But just so you know, a lot of people will think it's "worth wild" to upgrade. ;-)

EDIT: anyone in the US getting the 3G iPhone

got a few email from work... heres some info for yall.

-data plan will be $30 for the 3G iPhone, no text included.... u can add text a la carte ($5-200, $15-1500, $20-UNL)

-iPhones will be activated in the store at the time of purchase, whether it is an upgrade or a new activation... then all your iTunes stuff u do at home or w/e

-Pricing shown ($199 & $299) are for new two year agreements for new customers or QUALIFIED upgrading customers renewing. Unlike the 2G iPhone you cant just get this one and have your agreement automatically renewed if you arent already eligable (BUT i will say whenever you come into the stores we are fairly easygoing on over riding that, assuming you are atleast one year into your agreement).

NOW as for existing 2G iphone owners.... depending on contractual status and payment history(on time ya know!!) and account is in good standing we will review the account for an early upgrade, and most likely let you upgrade to the new one...

jus a few things for now... will post more when i know more.

I want to see written proof that they won't let everyone upgrade no matter where they are in current contract. I have a hard time buying into that, they'll be drastically reducing the number of potential subscribers right from the get go. I'm not saying these people won't go for it in the long run, but ATT will want to increase profit immediately and I am sure a good number of customers that haven't had data access before will jump on this thereby increasing the arpu.

Text not included??

What kind of cluster fock plan is this???

the more and more I hear about these "new" plans/details, I may be staying with my G1 Iphone and current plan..

I have seen the promised land

My versizon plan expired in March. I've been suffering with my Win Mobile POS (Mot Q) since then. The Mac-to-iPhone-to-PC syncing is the holy grail I've been waiting for.

I've been dealing with Missing Sync not syncing some stuff at all, or even worse... deleting appts for no good reason (two summer concerts, $500 worth of tix for example).

I can't freakin' wait.

I just talked to an AT&T sales rep and this is what I was told...there is no subsidy for the new iPhone 3G - $199/$299 is the retail price, and that is the price that they will be selling the phones for. If you are an existing customer, you keep your current AT&T rate plan, but your data plan will go up to $30 for the new iphone and your contract will extend by another 2 years regardless of where you are at your current contract. If you a new customer, then you will be subject to the new iphone rate plan as well. I know that I didn't have to change my rate plan when I bought the 16GB iphone in February...I already had a family plan of $59.99 for two lines with 550 minutes...so I got to keep that family plan, but just add on the $20 iphone data plan for the iphone. The sales rep says same thing for the iphone 3G - I get to keep my existing rate plan..but my data plan will go up by $10 if I buy the 3G phone. Hope the info is correct.

So if that's correct, one should purchase some other AT&T phone first and then buy the iPhone. Sell the other phone on ebay to pay for the additional cost of data.

Data Only

Does anyone know if you can have the data plan ONLY with no voice plan or do you have to have the voice plan and then add on data?

Essentially the extra $10/month is for AT&T's recent upgrade to their 3G infrastructure.

AT&T is just being greedy now. Apple is not taking a cut yet AT&T is getting more customers as the exclusive US carrier for the iPhone. AT&T subsidizes all the other phones so it's nothing really special. It's just that it was not being done before.

If this rate doesn't include unlimited sms than it is udderly ridiculous! With unlimited text messaging won't that push the rates over 100 a month!? My contract just ended with sprint and I was so excited to switch to a 3G iphone but there is no way in hell that its gonna happen with these bloodsucking plans.

This price increase better include unlimited sms!!!!! ohhhh i'm so furious.

ATT charging extra for 3G is a ripoff!

Steve said that 56% of people who wanted an iphone didn't buy one due to cost. If the prices for service go up significantly I can't imagine people flocking to buy them. The cost of service was actually what kept me from buying the original, I could care less about the one-time cost of the hardware. I've come around to the pricing, but not if it goes up even further.

I agree. I bought the iPhone because I wanted one, but the recurring monthly payment was already on the high side than I wanted to pay for. Since I wanted the iPhone so bad, I ended up signing up for the $59.95/month. This turns out to be $64/month after tax and fees.

I was hoping that we would just upgrade the phone to 3G and keep the same plan with access to the 3G network. The EDGE network is hardly usable at this point anyway. I would even opt to drop the data plan and I just use the wifi to do remote access since that is so much faster than the pathetic EDGE network.

I was ready to upgrade my iPhone until reading this news today. I'll stick with my old plan until it expires. After that, if Apple still is hand cuffed to ATT, then I'll consider jail breaking my beloved phone.

If that's true, then give me a jacked up iPhone price that lets me upgrade without signing a new 2 year contract......I don't want that subsidized crap.

:)

Didn't Jobs introduce the iPhone 1.0 by telling everyone it was a new model for cell phone sales? No subsidy/no lock in and so forth?

Anyone know how the data plans work with family plans? Is it still per phone? So if my wife and I both got an iPhone, it would cost us $60 extra per month? I'm really, really hoping it's different with family plans.

Per Gizmodo:

"We just talked to AT&T's President of National Distribution Glenn Lurie, who gave us all the new pricing and activation details for the iPhone 3G, which won't be getting special treatment anymore. It will be using all AT&T"s standard voice and data plans, which means $30 for unlimited 3G data for consumers, $45 for business users. Also, no in-home activation for iPhone 3G—it will have to be activated in store (at AT&T or Apple Store), which takes 10-12 minutes, meaning that first day line is going to SUCK. And you will have to camp out, since there won't be any online ordering at launch—and Glenn was mum on how many phones there'd be to go around."

No special treatment, huh? So I can get pay-as-you-go voice (and then never use it, thus eliminating voice from my bill) and just pay $30 per month? WIN!

Yes social security pays for mine. You should probably spend a few minutes researching what social security actually is. Secondly, I don't own one. This is why I can't justify going from a $40 cell bill to an $85. You fail, twice. And I'm sure it's worth it working 2 jobs paying for college and spending $85 a month for phone service. Way to put things into perspective.

Yea you should read up on some stuff as well and not generalize. I actually use it for a job, which it sounds like you don't have. Also if you don't have one then why are you complaining about the price increase?
I fail? God I forgot the internet was a huge game, gg to you I guess right?

Did you even read? Your not paying the same price...

Yes you are. The higher monthly fee is offset by the lower price of the phone itself. Do the math..

You're lucky to be getting the newer model for about the same price as the older model.
