Yippee! I have the spinning ball now... Waiting to pre-order. Love it.

To think... 12 years ago Apple was left for dead... now they can bring down two large company order systems with one product upgrade.

Love it... back to waiting! :D

You're mistaken. When you open the app instead of clicking on "reserve your iPhone 4" click on the banner above it. It's the same preorder process as the online apple store.
No, it's not. There's no cart, there's no data or voice or SMS/MMS plan inquiry, no "retrieving your information from AT&T," nothing. In other words it doesn't go through any of the steps that actually occur when a real order goes through.

After frustration online I got it all taken care of in about 5 minutes by downloading the apple store app.

Mine also said $599 in the email receipt, but since I gave them no payment info I'm not too worried. If for some reason they won't give me the subsidized price I'll walk out and get it another day when AT&T craptastic server isn't messing everything up

much like their network....

their servers suck too! It is a good thing the phone is (current and new iphone) is far superior to every other smart phone on the market or I would not put up with ATT's crappy everything.

iPhone Apple Store App

While trying to upgrade my original iPhone (bought on the initial launch day in 2007) I too had major trouble with the Apple Store and the AT&T site. The Apple Store kept timing out and/or returning an error, and the AT&T online store just flat-out refused to cooperate at all.

It took me several tries with the new iPhone app, but I got the RESERVATION to go through. I received a confirmation e-mail 15-20 minutes after the transaction. I was a little nervous because there wasn't any type of confirmation screen in the app; it just went back to the home screen.

I will be picking up my new phone in the Pentagon City Mall on 24 June!

It's clear now. AT&T has a learning disability. They learned absolutely nothing from the strain the iPhone has already put on their networks, and obviously have done nothing to prepare for what was going to happen today. Who wouldn't have predicted this?

In the Apple Store App - You are right about the preorder option but it still gives me a server error message and cancels the order. :(

I'm sure they were more then somewhat prepared. But planning will only get you so far on something like this...

I don't know. It's been AT&T's servers every year that cause this mess. For the 3G launch they couldn't even activate the phones and just sent people home with unactivated phones telling them to connect to iTunes and it will be activated eventually.

I was able to get one pre-ordered through ATT about an hour ago, however, after the CC page, and the order review page, the system kicked back a proxy error, so no order number.

I then got an e-mail about 5 minutes later stating that my order has been received and contains an order number, so I assume everything is good to go. Now, logging into the order status page my order doesn't yet appear. ( they state it may take 24 hours to appear)

Ummm, why not wait until a week or two (or longer) after launch to get the phone? Don't people have stuff to do instead of waiting on hold for 3 hours on a weekday?

I was just able to reserve one for instore pickup (only option I saw) on the iphone Apple Store app. Thanks for the tip guys. Oh and when i tried to reserve one for my daughter it couldnt do it because it needed to verify. My phone + my number = no problem

Wow the apple store iphone app actually worked I think. Question I have is I made my reservation but will I receive an email stating the reserve and such? Just wondering. Thanks for any info.

You know, we've had this basically every iPhone launch. I'm kind of used to it at this point, which is kind of sad.

That is sad - that says they're not really planning and preparing for the influx of business. How difficult is it to go "hey, this happened last year. Let's try and lessen that this year"?

And, sadly, I suspect that's what they were trying to do by opening up the pre-orders to Radio Shack & Best Buy (I don't remember if Wal-Mart was included in that or not). The problem, I suspect, (at least, it's where I keep getting hung up in the ordering process) is on AT&T's end: having to access your existing account information from AT&T, only to have AT&T's servers go "boom."

There has to be a better way. Even without ending AT&T's exclusivity, there has to be a better way.

AT&T's site is gone wackadoo for the past hour or so.

I was able to put 2 phones in my cart (for my wife and myself) but then, I couldn't check out (pay). And then I couldn't get to my cart. And now, for the last 20 minutes, I can't even log in.

I'm def not one to defend Apple to the death, but it really does seem that AT&T's dropping the ball here.

...which is not to say Apple shouldn't have MADE SURE they WOULDN'T

Don't believe anything an AT&T rep in a retail store says. Their sole goal is to get you to buy an iPhone under their login so they get the commission.

It's near impossible that the iPhone 4 is on "backorder."

This is the status I get:

I completed my order at 7:10 am eastern.

Count me in as one of the people who logged into Premier and had it pull up the account for someone else.

Not a banner day for AT&T or Apple.

I managed to pre-order from the AT&T website this morning, but I never received a confirmation email? Should I be worried?

They gave me an order number, but no email. Do you think the network congestion might be interrupting their outgoing emails? Did someone pre-order from the AT&T website and got an email?

I haven't received an email, but I can log in to my AT&T account and see the order "In Progress", so I figure since it's in the system I won't sweat the email.

If you crash servers with the amount of pre orders you get, you must be doing something right.

I'm still waiting to see if my order with at&t this morning got through. I have an order number but no email and it doesn't show up in their system.

I guess I just hope at this point.
