I agree. This isn't the 1st time Apple rolled out an iPhone, nor the 2nd. Not even the 3rd. This is the 4th year in a row came out with a new iPhone. You'd think that At&T would have learned by now to add a few more servers for this time of year.
Adding a "few servers" for what is essentially a one or two day event is not cost effective.
They'd rather deal with the headaches for a couple of days.
AT&T and Apple know people will "just deal with it" regardless of the experience.

ATT Website (iPhone 4 Order)

After hours of trying, I went to the ATT website and go through after 4 times in ordering the iPhone 4.

But this one is clearly more popular then all others and there seems to be a bit of pent up demand for a new iPhone...

The Apple Store App worked like a charm.

At first I got the "Error" message but I tried again 10 minutes later and now show a pre-order reservation

I guess I'll just wait in that horrible line next Thursday

Five years ago, I wouldn't have had an Apple product near me. Now everything in my house is Apple. I literally wouldn't know what to do without Apple these days. But the ATT network issues, have been the last straw. I love my iPhone and was really looking forward to 4. But if this is how they handle the pre-order, I can only imagine what's in store next...

Guys, let's make this clear.

ANYONE CAN RESERVE AN iPHONE FOR IN STORE PICK UP RIGHT NOW.
This works on the website AND the new Apple Store App.
You will have to wait in line, it does not charge you any money, there is NO GUARANTEE that you will actually get one and then you will STILL have to deal with AT&T's server woes - just on a different day.
It works fine because it doesn't even check your AT&T account info.

PRE-ORDERING DOES NOT WORK
It will not work on the website, and the Apple Store App gives you an error message and asks you if you want to reserve.
Pre-ordering checks AT&Ts servers, which are failing.
But when it succeeds - you actually PURCHASE the phone and it is YOURS.
(Although shipping MIGHT be delayed)

One is increasing your chances of buying one at your local Apple Store on launch day, the other is ACTUALLY BUYING the phone.

Reserving one does not mean you bought one. It does not even mean you will get one for sure.

Again

RESERVING and PREORDERING are NOT the same thing

I've been trying to tell people this in the other thread but nobody seems to listen!

What's the point of reserving the phone if you have to wait on line and deal with the chaos of getting your account info set up at the store? For some reason nobody seems to get it. Do you guys have any idea what kind of cluster feck the store is going to be on the 24th? No thank you. I'll wait until the servers get back working, so I can PAY for my phone AND set up the account info beforehand.

So when you see people like me walking into the store and out of the store while you are still screaming at an Apple employee because your account info doesn't seem to be coming up, or whatever. Don't say you weren't warned.

I'm starting to realize that everyone who actually gets a reserved is seeing the unsubsidized price. I went through the Upgrade a phone and I am eligible and still seeing the unsubsidized price.

Nope. Everyone who progresses through the reservation process without letting Apple access ATT's servers will result in having the ubsubsidized price shown.

Yeah I picked the $199 iPhone but my confirmation email says I reserved the non contract one. Can someone who reserved their iPhone through the iPhone app tell me how much their confirmation email says they paid. Thanks

I reserved my phone through the iPhone app. It did not give me a price at the bottom like I have seen for other people. It just says the size and color and then below that it says "Your Rate Plan" "Plan Includes" and "Cancel your reservation". There is no addition information for my plan though.

I'm not convinced the AT&T hate is warranted. I attempted to order from Apple this morning and was never able to make it through the process. I got "Oops!" screens at various stages throughout the process.

I then moved to the AT&T site and was able to complete my pre-order without issue (although the forms on AT&T's site were rather confusing) :p

My situation makes it look more like Apple's problem than it does AT&T's problem.

Details? I log into AT&T and I see this:

Due to a system upgrade the site is temporarily unavailable, please try again later. For immediate assistance please contact customer service at 1-800-331-0500.

Has anyone gotten a bona fide preorder (NOT RESERVATION) to work through apple.com at all today?

Att

My pre order for iPhone 4 from the AT&T store resulted in a 3GS being shipped before I even got home. Checked email and it said my 3GS order has been shipped. Now they are trying to figure out how to fix it since My eligible upgrade was applied to the 3GS order......

AT&T worked for me.

I came close a couple of times with AT&T and then finally came through. Got a confirmation e-mail. I didn't even get close with Apple.com.

Wanted to rock the white but worried the value of my 3GS would go down if i waited.

I've been trying since about 8am. It just dawned on me, that maybe its not a good idea to be trying right now even if it did go through.

With my luck, my order would end up caught in limbo somewhere.

really just a disgraceful situation for both companies. They knew that this was coming. If they felt that they couldn't handle the traffic, they could have phased in pre-orders by section of the country or world, or something akin to that.

AT&T is the issue

Seems like AT&T is the problem: using the app on the iPad the message is that it cannot connect to the AT&T server so please make an in-store reservation to pick up new phone. The Apple Store continues to error out (five hours now) in trying to verify account with AT&T. Someone should loose their job over this kind of fiasco.

AT&T Store - Fort Lee, NJ

Went in at noon, there were only a few people there. Asked if they were still accepting pre-orders and the girl said yes. Started giving her my info and she said that "You're lucky - about 25 people were waiting online when we opened and when we let them in to pre-order our servers went down. You're only the 3rd person that has been able to pre-order today". I pre-ordered 2 16GB.

So if you're in North Jersey - go to the AT&T store in Fort Lee!

=)

Do you think there are advantages to using more than one carrier?
