To all you guys telling us to use the Apple Store App: You do know that all that is doing is possibly reserving a phone on a first-come-first-serve basis, and that it's not even checking AT&T for any of your essential information like discount eligibility or data plans?

In other words, you're going to have to wait in a line as long or longer than the one for walk-in orders and have a very good chance of not getting your phone on launch day. Of course, even if you do get in before the cutoff, you're depending on the same sh*tty AT&T servers that failed today, likely under another massive strain, with the added problem that none of your information has been ported over.

If you realize this, more power to you. If not, just know that you will be mocked mercilessly when you come here bitch and moan about it, and deserve every bit of that scorn.

To that I say MAYBE, MAYBE NOT :)... I used the app store app and it verified my phone number and social and then told me a phone would be waiting for me until the end of the day. I'll take my chances.

U might have the response by now.

Wow the apple store iphone app actually worked I think. Question I have is I made my reservation but will I receive an email stating the reserve and such? Just wondering. Thanks for any info.

I received my email within a minute or two. After hours of trying online, the app store app completed it within a minute. WOW. thanks for the tips Mac R's

I feel like I have been on the quest for the holy grail all day. Do I need the phone? No. I am starting to have fun though guessing how long it will take for my order to go through. I started at 7:00 am ET and have been trying on various browsers while working all day.......I did come close this morning at about 7:50 when the system confirmed my rate plan and then would go no further. The App has been no go for purchase also. Must work so cannot go to store to pick up.....back to trying to spend money....

+1 to all who mentioned the Apple Store App. I will be happier if I get an email confirmation but currently says I have one reserved here in Austin, TX.

Ok I am happier now.....

Exactly ....

This pretty much follows the trend for AT&T, doesn't it? I remember identical issues when the iPhone first launched, and then when the 3G came out (though admittedly, to a lesser extent that time - probably because a lot of people weren't far enough into their contracts to be eligible to upgrade!).

By now, you'd think they'd be prepared for getting slammed with sign-ups on a launch day, but obviously, AT&T doesn't CARE enough to put forth the resources that would require.

I did my part by canceling my iPhone 3G's contract late last night and porting the number over to my new Cricket phone (a Samsung Messenger II). My plan is to use my new iPad 3G with the unlimited data plan, which I signed up for before the deadline where AT&T got rid of THAT, and to just carry a normal cellphone around for my voice and SMS messaging needs.

I'll be saving roughly $40/month off what I used to pay AT&T for my iPhone plan, and have truly unlimited talk time. No more worries about saving up "rollover minutes" or having old ones expire on me, etc.

Security Issues are major. Prime example of how not to prepare for a launch.

Apple needs to let go of the AT&T yoke and shift to other carriers. This isn't good by any means.

PS. Why no MacBook Air update apple?

If you crash servers with the amount of pre orders you get, you must be doing something right.

Sounds like we crashed their whole interal network. Has to be a first. Can't wait to see what happends on 24 when they try to active these phones...

att store

decided to go into an AT&T store after calling and speaking with someone who told me there was no wait and the systems were beginning to work fine! when i got there, there was a slight wait, but the systems were going in and out. i placed my orders but it took about 45 minutes since i was ordering one for me and my wife and the system kept teasing me by freezing and processing etc. i ended up leaving the store with receipts in hand so i should be good. some friends (in other towns) had their info jotted down on paper only to be at the mercy of someone having to hopefully manually enter everything in later for them! not fun. and these are just pre-orders. i chose to have the phones shipped to me so i can relax as much as possible from this point on. the 25th is now supposedly the day even if you choose in-store pick-up!

That's a sign that anyone who said that demand wasn't there, just got it way wrong. Demand is there and much more so than even they anticipated. It seems like AT&T needs to adjust to some load bearing server set up, but can't really blame them too much. They can't invest 1 million in new servers for a launch day when the only time they see the traffic is that one day. Just bad ROI. People tend to forget that this happened to Sprint too with the Evo launch.

As for everyone with a back ordered status, this makes sense to me since this is a pre-order. Stock is probably sitting in China on Apple's Journals. AT&T doesn't have any in stock yet since the transfer hasn't happened. I bet you that early next week, this will change and AT&T will stick them in their distribution centers and stock will go to positive as expected.

I had a bad feeling about this...

I went to the AT&T and Apple stores yesterday to figure out which option would be best to pre-order 2 iphones for my wife and I. The Apple rep seemed confident that they would be able to handle the MASSIVE amounts of people who'll be coming in today.

AT&T reps...they were surprised by my question on whether they were opening early today and that I was asking questions about the iPhone already.

When I went to AT&T again, I did so because it sounded like I can have them ship my order to my work address instead of my home for faster delivery. Turns out I couldn't and now I'm in this pseudo-bought the phones, but not really state with AT&T and its broken servers.

4 years... 4 years they've had exclusive rights to the iPhone. One would think that after every year that they've dealt with this they would put in a LITTLE more effort in making this experience not life-sucking. One would expect that the sales reps would have been prepared adequately for today. Instead, we had reps who came in late and were not at all ready to handle the customers coming in today.

I hate you AT&T with a great fiery passion. Your arrogance will be your downfall. I would not be surprise at all once your exclusive contract with Apple ends that Jobs will publicly spit on you as he's been doing with Adobe.

AT$T is *****, as usual. What else is new ?
Thanks, Steve !

Um, after trying the Apple website for about 4 hours, I went to the AT&T store and ordered mine. Their system was slow, but it was working, the entire process took about 20 minutes.

I managed to pre-order from the AT&T website this morning, but I never received a confirmation email? Should I be worried?

They gave me an order number, but no email. Do you think the network congestion might be interrupting their outgoing emails? Did someone pre-order from the AT&T website and got an email?

I thought I had 2 phones ordered from AT&T-both with order numbers, but I got emails after each order canceling them. (From the email-"Unfortunately, we were either unable to verify the information you provided or you have exceeded the number of lines of service that we allow customers to purchase online. As a result, your order has been canceled"). After the first cancellation, I called them and after the mandatory hour wait all they could do is repeat the email. So I tried a second time and got the same result. My feeling is that they could not verify my info because the servers were down, so they just cancelled the orders. Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow!

Was just wondering about Walmart?!?!

I live in Canada so I have to suck it up another month, but was wondering about my friends south of the border? I thought you guys could pre-order through Walmart too? Or is that just an AT&T cover up?? bahaha

Has anyone tried?

cheers

Guys, let's make this clear.

ANYONE CAN RESERVE AN iPHONE FOR IN STORE PICK UP RIGHT NOW.
This works on the website AND the new Apple Store App.
You will have to wait in line, it does not charge you any money, there is NO GUARANTEE that you will actually get one and then you will STILL have to deal with AT&T's server woes - just on a different day.
It works fine because it doesn't even check your AT&T account info.

PRE-ORDERING DOES NOT WORK
It will not work on the website, and the Apple Store App gives you an error message and asks you if you want to reserve.
Pre-ordering checks AT&Ts servers, which are failing.
But when it succeeds - you actually PURCHASE the phone and it is YOURS.
(Although shipping MIGHT be delayed)

One is increasing your chances of buying one at your local Apple Store on launch day, the other is ACTUALLY BUYING the phone.

Reserving one does not mean you bought one. It does not even mean you will get one for sure.

Again

RESERVING and PREORDERING are NOT the same thing

That is sad - that says they're not really planning and preparing for the influx of business. How difficult is it to go "hey, this happened last year. Let's try and lessen that this year"?

And, sadly, I suspect that's what they were trying to do by opening up the pre-orders to Radio Shack & Best Buy (I don't remember if Wal-Mart was included in that or not). The problem, I suspect, (at least, it's where I keep getting hung up in the ordering process) is on AT&T's end: having to access your existing account information from AT&T, only to have AT&T's servers go "boom."

There has to be a better way. Even without ending AT&T's exclusivity, there has to be a better way.

I agree. This isn't the 1st time Apple rolled out an iPhone, nor the 2nd. Not even the 3rd. This is the 4th year in a row came out with a new iPhone. You'd think that At&T would have learned by now to add a few more servers for this time of year.

Finally, my upgrade order went thru at 2:30 PM EST at AT&T website. I got the order number but no confirmation email yet.

I am going to wait for the rush to die down. I may even just wait until I am in PA to buy a new iPhone to beat the rush and the crush of California's sales tax.

Not just AT&T

It's not just AT&T's fault, Apple is just as at fault.

It's worse than the original iPhone release.

Update your systems...

I just pre-ordered via the app.

Interestingly, it gave me discounted pricing of $199 for the 16GB model, even though this morning the Apple Store website offered it to me for $399. Same phone info, etc. Technically I should not be eligible for the extra-discounted upgrade pricing (bought the 3GS in November 2009), but that's what I was offered via the app. I got the confirmation email (without pricing) in about 4 minutes after placing the order. I was sure to take a screen shot of the pricing with my account - although I suspect that the price won't be honored come June 24.

Sorry, I don't buy it. Based on the forum posts, only a handful of pre-orders were able to squeek through so I seriously doubt they're already backordered.

Sounds like AT&T's company line is to blame a supply shortage instead of their woefully inadequate eligibility servers.

I just ordered mine and they said it was back ordered. I'm not even sure what that means but apparently I'm getting mine *AFTER* the launch date, and they said I have the option of staying in line and buying it but then I'd have to not preorder it. Lame!

I managed to reserve one for pickup at the Apple Store using the new Apple Store app, but things went so quickly and smoothly that I'm convinced it will somehow fall through.

AT&T or Apple?

I'm not convinced the AT&T hate is warranted. I attempted to order from Apple this morning and was never able to make it through the process. I got "Oops!" screens at various stages throughout the process.

I then moved to the AT&T site and was able to complete my pre-order without issue (although the forms on AT&T's site were rather confusing) :p

My situation makes it look more like Apple's problem than it does AT&T's problem.

store app

after trying all day, got a phone on first try on store app, don't think it did all the ATT stuff, but they have a week to sort that out.

I think that means you have to pay the 600 since I didn't get any 600 option.

Yeah I picked the $199 iPhone but my confirmation email says I reserved the non contract one. Can someone who reserved their iPhone through the iPhone app tell me how much their confirmation email says they paid. Thanks
