Not that they wouldn't fib about something like this, but I was on the phone w/ an Apple Supervisor this morning (I had an existing issue), and he said "let me go ahead and put this order through for you"...

I THOUGHT I was getting a huge favor :D

But then, after several minutes, he said "do you mind if I call you back?" I said sure... and 45 minutes later he called back, and said "AT&T's servers have bit the dust. All orders are getting bottle-necked at the "account checking" phase of the process. We just had a company-wide meeting about it, and EVERYONE across the country is screwed until AT&T fixes things on their end."

Again, could be BS. But...

ANYONE CAN RESERVE AN iPHONE FOR IN STORE PICK UP RIGHT NOW.
This works on the website AND the new Apple Store App.
You will have to wait in line, it does not charge you any money, there is NO GUARANTEE that you will actually get one and then you will STILL have to deal with AT&T's server woes - just on a different day.
It works fine because it doesn't even check your AT&T account info.
This, is, frankly, wrong. Flat wrong. When I made my reservation for pick up at the Apple Store, it still asked for my phone number and other details. It queried the AT&T eligibility server. It populated the details of my calling, texting, and data plan. And then it completed the process. While ordering and reserving are different things, please don't tell people that AT&T isn't involved in the reservation process. It's simply not true. (Or at least wasn't true for me.)

My email from Apple is pretty explicit. If I show up at the store on 6/24, I'm leaving with my iPhone.

apple store app

download the new apple store retail app for your iphone or ipad, you can pre-order the iphone 4 using the app without any problem. The catch is that it seems that apple is now bypassing the att verification process because the confirmation emails i got stated that the price was 599.00 for the 16gb black iphone4. I'm actually not against paying full price, i'm hoping i can pull the micro sim and use the phone without at&t anyway. How about this scenario, iPhone 4+Line 2 App+Sprint Overdrive. you'll get service for your iphone 4, your ipad, and your laptop with one plan. seems to me like it's better than AT&T Period.

So I guess my staying up until 3 AM Chicago time wasn't a bad idea after all.:D

I pre-ordered mine through AT&T - was adding a line to a family plan so I had to - and it went through just fine at 3:15-ish. Got the confirmation emails for apre-order NOT a reservation and it will be delivered on 6/24.

Fyi

FYI, I started my order for my 32GB version this morning at 7:00 am EST on Apple.com. At first I kept getting the oops page for the 32GB but when I tried the 16BG it worked. I waited and periodically clicked the 32GB again until it finally went through. It even found my ATT info. I choosed the in-store pickup so maybe that was why it was easy. Got my email about 5 minutes later confirming my pickup on June 24th at 7AM. Very excited. Sorry so many people are having probs. :( My brother in Chicago said it took him 3 hours to order his phone and his wife's phone. My other brother in NY had been trying since 6am and was able to order his first iPhone around 2pm EST. So I guess its been all over the place.

p.s. I also think the post about ATT saying they are on backorder already was just a silly sales rep who was regrettably misinformed. I would be surprised if they even have had a chance to sell out with all the pre-order mishaps today.

This is really out of control. If Apple and/or AT&T knew they weren't going to be ready for this, they should have delayed the launch for prep time. I tried for an hour straight last night with no luck. Woke up at 6 am today and got through after about 5 tries. I still haven't received a confirmation email, but if I check my account for order status it shows the order so I am guessing that means it went through and I will receive the confirmation email at a later time. I was disappointed with the whole experience though. If nothing else, I hope Apple and AT&T learn from this and fix it for next time.

My pre order for iPhone 4 from the AT&T store resulted in a 3GS being shipped before I even got home. Checked email and it said my 3GS order has been shipped. Now they are trying to figure out how to fix it since My eligible upgrade was applied to the 3GS order......

Sounds like you may need a drink when you get home...

okay next question—how is anyone getting ordering through att to work? I keep hitting this brick wall:

Pre-ordering and reserving are not the same thing. Please read previous posts.

I managed to pre-order from the AT&T website this morning, but I never received a confirmation email? Should I be worried?

They gave me an order number, but no email. Do you think the network congestion might be interrupting their outgoing emails? Did someone pre-order from the AT&T website and got an email?

So I just talked to a customer service rep at ATT. She told me that first they have to do a credit check to make sure your credit hasn't changed since you last re-uped, and that since they are mailing the phones w/o signature required they are checking to see if you live in a high-crime neighborhood (if so they will require a signature). Then you will get a confirmation email, which you then have to click on to confirm the purchase.

I just reserved 2 (my wife and I) via the Apple Store App. Geez, what a godsend this app has been.

However, I did get my confirmation email and the price listed is the unsubsidized price. Is this normal?

yep. They'll fix it when you pick it up.

No matter how you slice it, its a black eye for both apple and AT&T. While the fault is with AT&T, people don't always make that connection and will blame apple for it.

You gotta believe apple must be royally pissed at AT&T's inability to handle this.

Not working for everyone.

I've tried both reserving and pre-ordering, no luck either way.

Note - I just now got a new message - "We'll be back soon. We are busy updating the store and will be back shortly."

The App store app (?) doesn't work if you don't have an Apple store near you.

I'm thinking waiting might be a better option....

among my various attempts, i did get to the point where it lists your plan and then i hit Continue... then timeout.

you'd think the biggest computer (er, electronics) company out there would have anticipated this (I know it's AT&T dropping the ball, but you'd think they would have helped out AT&T with better gear for today)

Has anyone gotten a bona fide preorder (NOT RESERVATION) to work through apple.com at all today?

Yes, I did at about 12:20 EDT. I was trying at 6am, but got the "Oops" error when I tried to add it to my cart to actually order and not merely reserve.

I went back at noon and clicked on my cart and the phone was there at the correct price. I gave my cc info and got an order number successfully, though it is about three hours later and I still have yet to receive the confirmation. However, I can use the Order Status interface to put in my order number and shipping zip and the order shows up.

Just pre-ordered a 16gb black through AT&T Premier. It was slow but I eventually got through. For what it's worth: order confirmation email came almost immediately.

Now time to cross my fingers that I get it the 24th or 25th.

Guys, let's make this clear.

PRE-ORDERING DOES NOT WORK
It will not work on the website, and the Apple Store App gives you an error message and asks you if you want to reserve.
Pre-ordering checks AT&Ts servers, which are failing.
But when it succeeds - you actually PURCHASE the phone and it is YOURS.
(Although shipping MIGHT be delayed)

One is increasing your chances of buying one at your local Apple Store on launch day, the other is ACTUALLY BUYING the phone.

Reserving one does not mean you bought one. It does not even mean you will get one for sure.

Again

RESERVING and PREORDERING are NOT the same thing

This doesn't make any sense. What the hell is reserving good for? If this is true, reserving it serves no purpose at all.

ATT Sucks

They can't get anything right. Poor 3G now cant even get orders placed.

AT&T new Motto. America's Fastest but smallest 3G coverage

I'm patiently waiting for the iPhone for Verizon. As much of an Apple fan that I am, I still can't believe I skipped all the previous versions of the iPhone. Glad I don't have to go through this crap right now. haha

Wow do I feel fortunate that my order placed through AT&T went through this morning. I did get a minor scare a couple hours ago when I got one of those Fraud Prevention emails from my credit card. I clicked authorize, waited about an hour, and then called AT&T to make sure my orders went through ok. The AT&T rep tells me they are successfully entered.

Jerry: I don't understand, I made a reservation, do you have my reservation?

Agent: Yes, we do, unfortunately we ran out of cars.

Jerry: But the reservation keeps the car here. That's why you have the
reservation.

Agent: I know why we have reservations.

Jerry: I don't think you do. If you did, I'd have a car. See, you know how to
take the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation and
that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody
can just take them.
