Not even bothering to post pics etc
So I received the case today. Nice looking, sturdy, attractive...however no carbon backing (which I did order/pay for), and no power button in the bag of hardware.
Installed the case, which was easy enough, but I was a little unhappy to see that there was no real "cushion" of any kind on the case. They've slotted both sides now so that there's only minimal contact between the case and the antenna itself. The whole package looks nice when installed:
And here you can see how they've slotted both sides to try to address the reception issues that the earlier design caused:
Once getting past my initial pleasure at the way the case looked, however, I began to look closer and noticed that there does, as previously reported, appear to be a rather sizable gap between the frame of the phone and the case itself, and I worried about how secure the phone would really be, and how much junk would get trapped in there:
Without the power button, obviously, there would be no way to reach the sleep button on the phone - I used the included allen wrench to hit it to take a screen cap of the speedtest app. The results were, unfortunately, rather conclusive.
First - the phone, wifi off, with my usual 2 - 3 bars of reception:
Next - the iphone, wifi off, with my Body glove vibe slide:
Finally, and predictably, with the atomic on:
I really WANTED to like this case and to want to keep it. I wanted to get home, put it on and be blown away. Unfortunately when you're talking about an 80 dollar case, you really do need to see something special to get what I'd consider good value...and this case seems to miss the mark. The slightly off-perfect fit, the lack of attention to detail (no backing or power button), and of course a fairly drastic drop in download speed made this decision very easy for me - back it goes. This is my first venture into the world of aluminum cases. It certainly wont be the last (I have an alumacase on the way to me as we speak, with a fusionwerkz sabre on pre-order)...but barring a drastic improvement, I think it's safe to say that the Atomic isn't the right one.
