I ordered a 16GB Black at ~7:45 EST on the 14th and my order has just been changed from 'Processing' to 'Shipped' (without a shipping date, or tracking number) within the last hour.

Maybe I'll get it on the 21st?

Here is the newest. Got a call from someone who was in the escalation office. I was told my order was not placed until 9/17 in the system and there was nothing anyone could do about it. I asked if I could get one put aside in a store, she said no. I asked about canceling the order (which all other CSRs said no to) and they told me yes and I could go to a store on Friday and get the phone. BUT before I cancelled I asked if I could still get my upgrade and was told absolutely yes. So I cancelled. NOW when I check my availability I am told I cant upgrade, that I used it up all when I placed the order. 04/2014 is my next upgrade. That and I cant get them to release the pending charge on my account. It just has to drop off.

Not necessarily true. I remember the iphone4 situation and people in that exact position were getting their phones on launch day.

Ive been reading this thread for a few days myself, but all people do is complain.
NOBODY CARES.

All people want is their tracking # and then they could care less.

I ordered my iPhone 16gb @ 620am est 9/14.
Yesterday = went from 1 to 0 backordered.
Last night = I got a tracking #.

What more is there to say.
There is no pattern besides the early bird gets the iPhone.

Well - 2PM EDT and still on back order. Resigning myself that this will not be in my hands before I head overseas on Monday.

(64gb Black, premier order, 8:24 EDT 9/14 order)

I have a couple of theories. But - please take with a grain of salt cause that's all they are - theories.

1- It is not logical that there would be one single time at which all the phone variants sold out their preorder volumes. While I am sure that Apple's marketing people are pretty good at forecasting, they would have to be wizards to exactly peg a time that all the phones would sell out. So - there's no reason for anyone to get their panties in a bunch just because someone ordered a different model phone a couple of hours after you and they have a shipping notice and you don't. Now sure, if someone ordered after you and they ordered the same model as you by the same method ( premier/regular/in-store) and they are getting one and you're not, then you may have a concern. But keep in mind this is an Internet forum where the truth is not always convenient for posters.

2 - Regarding the issue with premier orders sometimes showing a later order date than the 14th on the regular order page - perhaps this was not an issue for orders that were fulfilled by on-hand inventory in the US, but maybe it is an issue for orders that are getting fulfilled from China (I.e. the 64gb's reportedly). Perhaps those are the ones where the day later order date does impact fulfillment. That would clearly be an AT&T screwup.

Either way, I think it will be a shame if AT&T promised delivery and then can't deliver. However - no biggie. We will all get our phones eventually.

So in my timezone (central) pre-orders began at 2:00am. My order was complete at exactly 2:15am but was able to start filling out information at about 2:04am. I order from the apple website but I am an AT&T costumer and I upgraded my phone through them. I am still in the "processing phase" and was wondering if anyone else had this issue.

I was assuming since I ordered it within minutes of the release that I wouldnt have any problems but again I have been in the processing phase for days when people who ordered their phone HOURS after me have already had their phones ship!

Any ideas or feedback as to why this may be happening would be great! I read a lot of comments but couldnt really find the answer I was looking for!

mine has shipped too! no email about the tracking number yet but i checked my order status on att.com and it says in progress with 1 qty ordered no backorder no qty shipped but i got my tracking number and it says fedex
 
Do you actually think AT&T failing to ship on time will prevent many of us from getting iPhones on launch day. Not remotely but as this a forum for Apple users I thought it would be a suitable place to commiserate with others who also had shipping problems. Apparently the COD playing XBOX set really enjoy this forum as well.

I don't think it's my fault because I ordered at 12:10 and stayed online until 3am pst, but AT&T wouldn't give me info that my credit card had not gone through until Saturday noon. Talked to them on the phone and put in a new card and it was processed but my order date was pushed to the 15th. I don't have much faith in getting my phone on the 21st. Have fun with your iPhones on Friday, all!

Welcome to the party. AT&T blows, never again will I order from them. Same **** happened to me, yet I didn't cancel just gonna wait the 2-3 weeks.
 
Hers my story:
Bought two 64 GB iPhones on the premier direct business site at 12:05pm eastern time on the 14th. My credit card was billed the entire amount within the hour and I got an email at 8pm that night advising me it will ship in 14-21 days.

The site has shown in progress since my order date which did show up as it should as ordered 9/14/12.

Just checked and it shows shipped 9/19/12 via FedEx with a tracking number.

Just to let everyone know I am sure if you ordered through the premier business direct site anytime that day I'm sure you'll get the phone on the 21st. All along I was told the the premier business direct holds loads of phones for their business customers. Good luck!

Doesnt matter, you ordered AFTER 12pm.
You arent your iPhone 5 on release date no matter what.

I ordered at 9:30 est and mine has shipped. I dont care when I get it. I have a perfectly good phone that will get me through till then. I got a little worked up during the 4 pre order launch and while I want a new phone I just don't care that much. It is fun to follow this thread and see the exact same thing happen now as it did when the 4 launched. Total deja vu! What I dont get is why you care what people are posting? If you don't like it go away. I'm sorry you don't care about other people but this thread is for att pre orders. What the hell do you think people should be posting? staying up all night to order a phone has nothing to do with when you'll get the damn thing anyway!
 
For those with FedEx tracking...

What does your reference number look like? Does it contain your order number? Phone number? etc?

Perhaps we could help those (such as myself) who have shipped status yet no tracking yet if we figure out how the reference number for fedex is handled.
 
On a side note, I don't have enough space open on my iPhone 4 16GB to update to iOS 6. I dont really want to remove anything. Another reason why my iPhone 5 needs to get here ASAP. Also, it'd be cool to be surprised with iOS 6 on the 5 the first time I use it.
 
Did you order through Premier or the regular AT&T site?

I signed in on the regular AT&T site, but I have a work discount and after checking for upgrade eligibility it forwarded me to Premier to order (I don't have a Premier login that I know of).

I didn't think UPS reused tracking numbers, but maybe the status will change later?

Actually, now when I do an order status, it's back to showing In Progress/Pending Shipment. AT&T's system really seems to be having problems. I'll leave it til tomorrow. I have iOS 6 to play with.

We all need to be patient...

I successfully ordered my phones via the AT&T website at 3:58am EST after repeatedly trying to place an order since 3am (when the launch began).

Shortly thereafter, I received a confirmation message stating that my phones would ARRIVE on September 21.

However, my orders still show as pending and back ordered via the AT&T order status website.

I called the online orders customer service number at AT&T and was extremely polite with the representative I spoke to. I started by apologizing for adding to the iPhone 5 drama with my call, and I sympathized with her that I'm sure things are crazy for them right now.

We have to remember that there are literally millions of phones being shipped out for these orders.

I calmly explained that I simply wanted to confirm with her that my phones would be delivered to me on the 21st as stated in my confirmation email.

The representative explained to me that there is a window of time on the 14th within which you needed to have your CREDIT CARD PREAUTHORIZATION in order for your phones to be delivered on the 21st or 22nd. That window goes from 3am EST until shortly after noon EST.

In my case, like I said, I placed my order at 3:58am EST, but my credit card preauth didn't go through until shortly after 10am. Who knows what caused the delay... Regardless, mine went through within the window, and she stated that I should expect my phone to arrive as stated in my confirmation email.

She also went on to explain that there are 2 separate warehouses from which the iPhones will be delivered from AT&T. She explained that it looks like my phones are located at the warehouse in Texas, which is still processing its allotment of iPhone 5s. She stated that was the reason that my order status had not updated to reflect as "shipped" because they have yet to ship. This does not necessarily mean they wont ship in time for a Friday delivery - Texas isn't far away from Florida, and these orders will be shipped "priority" anyway, which is an overnight service.

So, if you placed your order during the early morning hours of Friday the 14th, and if your credit card was preauthorized before noon EST that same day, then you are most likely to receive your phone as stated in your confirmation message.

If your preauth did not go through prior to noon est, then your confirmation message likely states that your phone will arrive in 14-21 days. Unfortunately, that is when your phone will arrive.

So, basically - the best information is found in your confirmation message, irregardless of what the AT&T website says about your order status. The order status will be updated with shipping information as soon as your phone is shipped, and for a Friday delivery, shipments can go out as late as Thursday.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. But, if I don't get my phone on Friday, life will continue to go on and I'll just have to deal with it.

In the mean time, go get iOS6 and install it on your current iPhone (if you have one). It's available as an update from iTunes or via your iPhone's settings menu, and it's essentially the same on the iPhone 4S as it will be on the iPhone 5 (aside from a larger screen). That should hold you over until your new iPhone arrives.
