Long-time lurker first-time poster.

I pre-ordered a black 16GB at 8:45am CST (6:45am pacific time) on 9/14 and received an email confirmation ten minutes later. I received the "Congratulations!" text message at about 9:45am CST. I have received no updates since then and my status has showed backordered ever since the order status page was available for viewing.

I've been thinking I should have gone with the 32GB model and have friends that could make waiting in line a pleasurable experience, so I decided I want to cancel. I have not contacted AT&T, either by chat or phone, since the preorder ordeal began as I knew badgering their front line employees would get me nowhere. I called AT&T about 20 mintues ago and the very amenable CSR immediately told me that my order is in fact not backordered and that a phone has been assigned to me, but has yet to ship. She told me it will likely ship tomorrow and arrive on Monday (she also mentioned, without hesitation, that she could still cancel the order if I wished). I'm not particularly happy about the situation, considering I ordered before many people whose orders have shipped and that I live less than 30 miles from one of the major warehouses, but que sera sera. I will probably exchange it for a 32GB model on Monday and life will move on.

Edit: order number begins with 1407.

I had a person willing to cancel my preorder but I didn't trust that it would actually get cancelled and I would lose my eligibility for an upgrade. Still debating whether to try this.
You can go to www.att.com/
myorder and there is a cancel pre-order button there. I don't think we can trust At&t to even cancel.

I was able to cancel by calling them (just got an email confirmation) and I've asked to reverse my upgrade eligibility right away.

Why would you cancel? Unless you plan on getting in line like now you will have to wait even longer.

I was on the fence about buying another iPhone. I've never had this uncertainty with previous Apple purchases. I'm going to test drive Android phone come in November with GNote 2. Besides, my wife has an iPhone and I have an iPad 3 so I won't miss iOS apps too much
 
YESSS!!!! I got my fedex tracking number too. However, in the past I have always waited in line to get the product...it just doesn't feel right if I don't go stand in line today I feel like i'm missing a very important event aha!
 
HOLY HOLY! I have a 1612 and I just logged in to order status and see that I have now have a shipped phone with tracking number!!!!!

I just saw this...I have a 1612 order. Please see attached. I haven't received any text or email since the first email either. I ordered as a new customer with port from Verizon at 8:39AM EST on 9/14.

I'm holding out hope for you. Good luck
 
Just wanted to share my story so far...

Ordered 16GB White iPhone 5 ordered from regular AT&T site at 2:52am EST on 9/14, paid via Visa Debit Card, order number began with 1711.

Both order status screens have been showing "Processing" and "In Progress" all week, and neither have ever showed a backorder.

Last night, www.wireless.att.com/order_status showed a tracking number, that didn't work at the time. Order status still read "In Progress."

Btw, the tracking number had nothing to do with my cell number, or any other phone number. Not my order number or account number either, just a random tracking number.

Tracked it again this morning and the phone had made its way from TX to NJ (I live in NJ). Both order status sites now show NOTHING at all, as if my order never existed... So I never saw it actually say "shipped," but it definitely was and I should definitely have my phone tomorrow! :)

*My card has yet to be charged or even pre-auth'd (my husband works at our bank and has been checking for me).*

No joy.... stopped over AT&T store and asked why since I ordered at 9:20 on 9/14 I still have both phones on back order. Said nothing they could do. Gonna stop over early and see if I get lucky and pickup.

UPS confirmed to me no signature required. I also have the option for it to stay at the center when it arrives in the morning. I'm tempted to go there and do pick up rather than wait for delivery, but will they have it available as soon as they open?

I have a fed ex and I am thinking of just having it go to my local fedex store so it can be picked up afterwork instead of it going half way across town to pick up at the distribution center or worse yet redelievered on Monday.

When I called FedEx to ask they said there was nothing up in the shipping order stating that a sig was necessary, but it would be up to the driver and if I wanted to, I could put a note on my door stating that its OK to leave the package there.
 
My experience with UPS is that they DUMP everything! :mad:

Forgot to say that in the XB14117XXXXXX code, the first X is real...so i do fall into that beginning with X category, I believe.

For those who have ordered in store before.... did they call you when it arrived? Or did you simply know by looking online.

I have a fear that I'll be "backordered" but my phone will be sitting in the store, and neither me nor the reps will know because of a bogus status

I pre-ordered the 4 (not 4s) when it came out the exact same way I pre-ordered the 5 and I recorded it a day early in the mail.

I'm currently b/o on my 5 and got the 14-21 e-mail.

1612 order number changed

I've checked my online status about 200 times the past few days. I've called in and been told it would be 20days or so. I had the dreaded 1612 number.

I just checked again (for the 201st time) and everything looks great. No longer backordered, have FEDEX tracking numbers and its on its way.

One thing, My order number has changed. it now starts with a 1407.

Do not give up hope. I've been on this site for days now complaining. I only received my first order confirmation email, nothing else.
 
Glad to be in this position. AT&T gets the job done despite being horrible at communicating accurate information with its customers.

I agree that the device is just a phone... but $200.00+ is not JUST $200.00!

I'm still backordered. I ordered a 32GB white in store at 9:11 AM Eastern. I'm super annoyed I'm STILL on backorder and people who ordered literally HOURS after I did have tracking numbers. ridiculous.

That stinks....I ordered a 32GB black 20 mins after you and mine is on its way with a tracking number.
