Long-time lurker first-time poster.
I pre-ordered a black 16GB at 8:45am CST (6:45am pacific time) on 9/14 and received an email confirmation ten minutes later. I received the "Congratulations!" text message at about 9:45am CST. I have received no updates since then and my status has showed backordered ever since the order status page was available for viewing.
I've been thinking I should have gone with the 32GB model and have friends that could make waiting in line a pleasurable experience, so I decided I want to cancel. I have not contacted AT&T, either by chat or phone, since the preorder ordeal began as I knew badgering their front line employees would get me nowhere. I called AT&T about 20 mintues ago and the very amenable CSR immediately told me that my order is in fact not backordered and that a phone has been assigned to me, but has yet to ship. She told me it will likely ship tomorrow and arrive on Monday (she also mentioned, without hesitation, that she could still cancel the order if I wished). I'm not particularly happy about the situation, considering I ordered before many people whose orders have shipped and that I live less than 30 miles from one of the major warehouses, but que sera sera. I will probably exchange it for a 32GB model on Monday and life will move on.
