I just spoke to a rep who also gave me this info. Whether this is true or not, I still call AT&T out on their BS. How did they not know they'd need a certain amount of SIM cards to match the total amount of inventory? They're AT&T, the seventh largest company in the United States. How did they not plan accordingly? At this point, it's just excuses after excuses after excuses.

I was told the same thing twice about the SIM cards being on back order with an Oct 5-16 delivery. That put me over the edge to cancel my order and buy one that was readily available at noon today at my AT&T store .

We are exhausted, exasperated, and disheartened. ATT has managed to suck ALL of the joy out of what should have been a fun and enjoyable experience, and we all feel used, and abused by our own carrier, who has handled this abysmally.

Go to big red. Then you can hate multiple carriers. I have been there already and let me tell you, the grass ain't greener there.

So if I've still got one on preorder, and I do the online check for upgrade eligibility and it comes back that I can get one for the subsidized price, what does that mean? I can just walk in the store and pick one up without first having to go through the hassle of trying to cancel the original order?

Mine was still on preorder and said I still had upgrade eligibility. So I went to the Apple store this morning and got a subsidized phone with no issues. I tried to call ATT and cancel the preorder, but they said it can't be cancelled. Not sure I believe it since others here have said they got theirs cancelled. But she wouldn't back down and said her supervisor told her it can't be cancelled. So whatever. If they do ship it I will refuse to accept it and send it back.

Go get a phone at the store while you still can before they ship it and take your eligibility.

My husband, who did not preorder, decided after seeing mine that he might want one. We went to our Apple store around 5:30 PM but they were out of AT&T version. Had plenty of Verizon & Sprint. So, we decided to try an AT&T store. We walked in & they said they were out but if we wanted, they would reserve one FOR TOMORROW. They double-checked that they still had the 16GB Black available & told my husband they would call in the morning so he could come pick it up. So, if you are still on backorder, maybe check a few AT&T stores to see if they have some stock coming in. That way they could cancel the preorder & get your upgrade status back & get you going. Of course, we live in a relatively small town so it might be different in bigger areas.

Completely agree

I got mine at 4:30PM and I'm in love with my new iphone 5!!!

Mine got opened at my store at 2PM and I got jealous of the Rep that was activating it. I wanted to do all of that, lol... Oh yeah, I Love Siri :D (I come from iPhone4, so it's new for me, heh)

But my journey isn't over. Now to keep track of my sister's iPhone which is in AT&T's Limbo (still backordered 1) :(

You're probably right

Go to big red. Then you can hate multiple carriers. I have been there already and let me tell you, the grass ain't greener there.

I've never had Verizon before but I realize they're probably no better than AT&T. What I had a problem with AT&T was that even though they failed to deliver my phone on the day they stated and also failed to honor first come first served (3:20am order), they also would absolutely NOT cancel my order. They can't even tell me anything about the order other than it exists. Why the hard line on cancelling the order when I'm standing in Apple store with a phone in hand? And, when I threatened to jump to Verizon they didn't even put up a fight. Obviously my decade of being a loyal customer was not worth very much in their eyes. I find it hard to continue to do business with a company when I've been treated that way. Will I ever use AT&T again? Maybe, you never know. But, Delta treated me the same way in 2005 and I haven't flown them since.

AT&T not fair with pre-orders

My wife and I pre-ordered the iPhone 5 last friday and they still have yet to process our order. Then today I got wind of people just walking into the AT&T store and buying it and taking it home. What was the purpose of pre-ordering the damn thing if I don't get it when it comes out. I tried to go to the AT&T store to cancel my pre-order and just get one at the store and they told me I couldn't do it. So here I paid in full for two phones and people that didn't pre-order get it before I do. How is that fair?

finally off backorder

Been lurking on here for a while... ordered in-store at 9/14 at 12:04pm and 12:11pm EST; 12:04pm EST just came off of backorder about 2 hours ago, 12:11pm EST still on backorder. No shipping info.

In store rep told me today 4 weeks, CSR 1 said should be here today, CSR 2 said 14-21 days from pre-order, CSR 3 said no idea. Awesome.

Edit 11:14pm EST: Both phones are now off of backorder. Still no shipping information. Going to sleep in hopes of waking up to a tracking number *fingers crossed*

Does anyone with experience exchanging phones as a Premier customer know if you can do it through the regular AT&T number? The Premier department is closed until Monday.

I love when people take a bad experience or bad customer service so very personally. When I worked at retail and people would scream they were never coming back I knew it meant one of two things. Either they WOULD come back or they'd be inconvenienced by not being able to go to their big box store. We didn't miss them. And guess what? Neither does Delta or AT&T.

But way to stick it to them!

Sorry to everyone who didn't get your phones.....

but this thing is SWEET! I can't believe the difference.

So, when you get your phone, if you're doing an upgrade from another line - DO NOT ACTIVATE YOUR PHONE, call AT&T and have them activate your phone. The guy I talked to was so nice and we were talking about everyone getting angry. He said, yep, and now they are angry because they are activating their phones without reversing the upgrade and then you need a new SIM card....and guess what??? They're are no SIM cards, they're all on backorder. He said it's killing him to say 14-21 days. I said, is it really 14-21 days or are you guys covering your butts? He said - they are COMPLETELY sold out and it will be at least a week or two before they get any more phones, but it shouldn't be 14-21 days.

Good luck everyone. It really is a great phone.

Well I just checked and my order is still processing but no longer on backorder. However, the pre-authorization is no longer there on my card. Now what?

Woohoo backordered qty just changed to 0. I preordered in store on 9/14 at like 5 pm est.

Yeah I pre ordered at 8 pm est. I should be close to being off back order. But oh wait att completely screwed up my order and somehow my order was placed the 17th. Still so pissed about that. They take my terms and conditions on the 14th and my money and then tell me I placed my order 3 days later. Seriously, shove it up your ass AT&T.

UPS dropped packages off at my building at 9PM. Feel bad for the delivery drivers working today. Their usual drop off is 3PM.

Also to any people that have AT&T telling them they can't cancel their order or reset their eligibility. Threaten to cancel your account or be transferred to retentions department. Always works with AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and other giant clusterf**k companies. That department always has the power to get things done.
