That's BS. In an online chat with billing, I lied and wrote "I was told that you could waive my activation fees since I have 3 lines upgrading but that I should wait until I received the phones to inquire about it....is it still too early?" and then the guy immediately said "let me waive the activation fees now". So I suggest you do an online chat and try that. The supervisor offering to cut half of your activation fee is an insult...
Came home from church and mine now shows shipped with a Tuesday delivery
Tuesday will be a cool day. New iPhone and new Mumford & Sons album release!
Oh, and its a black 64, and I have unlimited data plan. Ordered over phone to my local store around 1pm eastern on 14th. Paid with debit card.

FedEx delivers Monday through Saturday
In order for an overnight delivery to be delivered on a Monday the shipment has to be in before the cutoff time on Friday. If the shipment is initiated after that cutoff time or anytime on Saturday or Sunday it will be considered the same as if you shipped it on Monday. Hence the Tuesday delivery date.
Spoke to a woman in retention. She was willing to credit my account $180 plus waive the $36 activation fee for the inconvenience of a projected 2-3 week delay. I'm still without a phone though.

it's pretty ridiculous. which model did you order? I ordered the 64GB Black. I'm beginning to think that they have low quantities of that model because I, too, ordered as soon as pre-orders went live and my expected shipment isn't for 2-4 weeks.

Just talked to a really nice guy on the phone from AT&T Customer Service.
I told him that my 16GB Black went off of backorder Friday night.
He then told me, "Great News!" He said my phone will be shipped tomorrow (Monday) and I should have it Monday/Tuesday

what is retention if u dont mind me asking?? i asked for some sort of credit and they flat out told me no.. is there a number?
I guess my question is apple is supposed to be going live in a whole bunch of more countries this up coming friday... so do they really have any incentive to be making the US versions of the phone right now? Of course realistically, I bet there is an iphone for everyone chatting in this thread somewhere within AT&T's control in some store front somewhere where no one will buy it.. and worse.. by people who bought them to sell online for a profit. (A horrible behavior that is only re-enforced by people who buy them for more than msrp, thus people are willing to buy them to sell, thus there is a shortage, thus etc....).
If I am still with att in 2 years... I will be dropping premier so i can order like a real human being from apple... NEVER missed a launch date with them.
And att really needs to make its system more clear and open... and WTF with premier ... its like someone had to enter the stuff by hand BACK into the REAL ordering system... causing errors and problems and of course delaying orders by days from when they were really made.

It was noted in my account that both of my activation fees are to be waived. It didn't require a manager or pulling teeth. It was cake. $72 in activation fees waived is good.
I didn't order through premier - just the regular website. But they gave a premier account order, and when I tried to register at the premier site so I could get more info, they told me I wasn't eligible!
And of course even though they indicate 2-3 weeks before shipping (a full week after I placed my order), I can't cancel and just pick one up at the store like those who didn't bother to preorder. So for being a loyal customer for some time, going through the effort to pre-order, I'll likely get mine three weeks after others who waited. Way to go AT&T!
I had my upgrade fee waived by chatting with AT&T after hours CS (no luck with the American normal hours CS team). Since they couldn't change my eligibility date, a manager had to override the $250 charge during the checkout process. This is why I order with AT&T through the phone, since she said there was no other way. There's also a thread going around that says you can try to get the fee waived after you receive the phone. So there are two options to save you $250 which is a lot of money, especially when you're trying to pay for the 5 with a late 4S sale (I'm on the same boat).
Also, if you use Amazon a lot, Amazon has really good value right now for tradeins. It's a good option if you can't find a Craigslist or ebay buyer.
