I haven't read through all the threads, but here's what I did to get my iphone 5 to ship. Short story, pay your bill now!
Original order placed late on 9/14. Upgrade on at&t site. Ordered later in day cause my 5 line family plan bill was was past due. I was told phone would ship 10/14 or 10/21, or in 21 days, or something like that.
For past week, no change in status on at&t site: "Processing". Next payment is due this Wednesday. So, I paid it online last night, Sunday night.
Checked status this AM, no change, "Processing". However, around 6:30 PM I noticed on at&t account that it had shipped. !!!! 7:24 PM, I got an email that confirmed, with tracking number.
So, moral of my story, PAY YOUR BILL! AT&T probably fulfilled orders in a "first customer we can trust, first shipped" strategy.
Of course, if every post after this says their preorder iphone has shipped, then I guess I'm just FIRST.

Anyone behind on their bill should pay it but if your bill isn't due yet then they aren't factoring that in. If anything your order will be canceled if you're behind. They aren't going to hold it in the processing stage waiting for you to pay a bill that isn't due yet. This is especially true for people that have autopay.
