AT&T's vagueness when it comes to order status is causing a lot of MR members to fret for no reason.

I can only speak to the people who pre-ordered within the first 3 or 4 hours after 12 am PST. As long as your payment is cleared with no issues, I'm very confident you'll receive your iPhone 5 on the 21st. End of story. Chill out.

(Stop hanging on every word from the AT&T reps. If you haven't noticed already in this thread, they tend to be misinformed and stating things that will not come to fruition.)

I had a charge pending for the price but then it went away....does that mean i'm still getting it on the 21st? i ordered mine at 4am pacific from the premier website.

So I just got off the phone with ATT (after a long hold!). I pre-ordered over the phone around 8:45 am est on the 14th. I initially received an email that said my order would ship on 9/21.

Last night I received an email saying my order would ship in 14-21 business days and was calling ATT to cancel the pre-order this morning (to wait in line on the 21st instead). They told me the email was sent to everyone who pre-ordered and assured me that my order would ship 9/20 for a 9/21 delivery, and that anyone who ordered by 11:30 would be receiving their orders on 9/21.

Also, my order was shown as backordered on the check status page up until last night.

Do you mean by 11:30 am as of 9/14??? Just curious.

Yes I think he means if you ordered by 11:30AM on 9/14, you should get it. I've seen people posting that too... "If you ordered before noon, you'll be fine"

I spoke with a CSR on Friday afternoon, and she told me "If you ordered before 10am, you'll get yours on 9/21"

Who really knows at this point....

QUESTION: If I...

- Ordered at 7:45am on Friday by adding a line to my family acct through the AT&T premiere website.
- Have a $250 pending charge on my credit card
- Order says "processing" on the my orders AT&T website
- Still haven't received the terms and conditions email!

What does that mean? Do I need to get the Terms&Conditions email before anything can happen?

I agree... don't worry what AT&T reps tell you because they are for the most part all misinformed. When the iPhone 4S came out I was going crazy too because it said that my order hadn't even shipped out yet on the day that it was supposed to be delivered. I called them and spoke to a bunch of Reps, they said a variety of different stories about it being backordered, delivery taking longer, etc.... and then it came an hour later and was delivered at my house (while the website still displayed it not being shipped yet).

AT&T's system is very outdated and often doesn't display the most recent or updated status. Just relax... as long as you ordered in the first few hours you will get it on time.

ATT pre-order experience.

I pre-ordered at launch the iphone 4 and 4s.

For those worrying about their order status and shipping status.

ATT does not send tracking info until the phone has shipped. With the iphone 4 I actually had the phone arrive at my house before I received the tracking info. With the 4s I received an email at about 3AM on the launch day with tracking and received the phone that afternoon. ATT ships Fed Ex overnight or whatever they call the service to get the phone to you on launch.

Also if your status has changed or changes from backordered-1 to backordered-0 you will be receiving your phone on launch day.

Also calling ATT customer service is a waste of time... they really have no clue and will "tell you what you want to hear" in most cases.

Funny I ordered Friday 8 pm est on the phone and was charged for each phone I ordered instantly. So your logic of being charged will automatically yield a phone on the 21st is untrue. On the other hand I have 0 confirmation emails, and NO order status page online. Yet the CSR says everything is fine when I call them.

Its not a 'logic', its a 'process' :). An authorization is obtained when you place the order, the charge is settled (based on that authorization) once the order ships. This process is 'right' more often than 'wrong'. No one knows 'for sure' whats going on, but we can use what we know from previous pre-orders and order fulfillment process in general, and come up with an idea.

Preordered at about 12:30PST. Received confirmation email at 2:30AM. Had a pending charge for the full amount. Received the "preorder has been processesd." text at about 2:00PM. The phone was listed as backordered all weekend. Now, the pending charge is gone and the phone is no longer backordered and is now marked ordered. I never received the postponed shipment email. One thing I noticed is that there are two spots to check your order status. Each presents slightly different information. I don't really have a question, just though I would post my experience in case anyone else is in the same boat.

Guessing why AT&T shows backorder status

So here is what I believe is happening and why we are not seeing significant numbers of order status changes (and some folks wont until very late in the game). This is all speculation on my part, but I have been in the distribution business for about 15 years.

In the China facility, they are likely shipping using 2 different methods:

Direct fulfillment, these are the orders placed through Apple. Individual phones are placed in cartons, manifested to the parcel carrier, palletized, loaded and sent on their way direct to the buyer.

Bulk Fulfillment, They ship the phones in bulk to a third-party distribution center (AT&T) where they are broken down, cartonized, manifested to the appropriate (cheapest) carrier, and loaded on a trailer for shipping.

The phones are back ordered because there is literally no stock available in the AT&T warehouse to fulfill your order... yet. There is pending inventory that is/will be en route to their network, but they cannot allocate this inventory until it is physically verified at their facility. That is why we see a backorder quantity.

As for a tracking number, the key to the processes that I outlined above is the manifesting process. The folks who ordered through Apple already have one because their cartons were manifested in China, direct to them. AT&T orders will not see a tracking number until they are manifested from their facility, so probably the day before they arrive. You could see it sooner if they do a ship and hold type of process, but I dont know enough about what they do. The hold could be at their gates, or they might task the parcel carrier with 'hold for delivery on 9/21'.

Anyway, my belief is that if they are already manifesting direct shipments, the bulk stock for the carriers is already en route. I'm assuming that they already have parcel trailers on-site that are ready to load. They have a tremendous volume to get through, so they will start very shortly after the stock arrives and is received into their facility.

The cartonization and manifesting processes that they are doing at AT&T will likely be going full speed for the next few weeks. So tracking numbers will probably start trickling in over the next 24-48 hours. If you dont have one by late Thursday night, you wont be getting your phone on Friday.

Editing to add: When they mainfest, that is when THEY know the tracking number. It doesn't necessarily mean that they are publishing it to US at that point.

I ordered shortly before you about 7am cst and it still shows 1 in backorder, buy the authorization charge has now become a completed charge. Not sure if this means anything or not.

If it has become a settled charge, I am inclined to say you will get it, keep checking the status page through Thursday. Is it a black 64 by any chance?

"In Progress" and "Processing" are the same thing.

Mine does not have quantities in back-ordered column

Is this a good sign?

I ordered through AT&T @ 3:02am EST (Check out)

:/ Hopefully I get it in time. I don't have a phone with me now and it's pretty weird.

I tried to track from UPS and FEDEX but nothing.

Anyways good luck to all of us.

Mine use to have a QTY in Backorder for all 4 items in my list. Now as of this morning it doesn't. But the entire time it has said Pending Shipment.

Just finished a chat with Derek from ATT and said that my iphone is showing an expected delivery date of 9/20/12! I might get the phone a day early after all:D

I never received this email stating it would be 14-21 days. I honestly think the ATT reps don't know, they were probably given a memo stating that anyone ordered by 11:30am would get it but who knows, I think if your CC is charged your in good shape, not a pending charge, but a full charge.

Mine too says penidng shipment on that site, as well as in process.

good insight, thanks!

I preorder mine in the store at around 9am on 9/14. I am having it delivered to the store because my address/postal code always gets mixed up with the next town over. I hope I get it on 9/21 but if I have to wait 2-3 weeks as it says so be it afterall all it is just a phone!

When I spoke with an AT&T CSR on Saturday, they told me they were receiving their stock on 9/20. I assume all of our statuses will change when they are literally and physically "in stock".

It is a settled charge as of today. It had been pending since almost immediately after my preorder on the 14th. No, it's a black 16gb.

My cousin has Sprint and he was told that his phone would ship out on Friday. Not arrive on Friday. He said when he spoke to Sprint, that they were blunt and said there is a mess up with all of the carriers stock of phone pre orders for all carriers from Apple. And they would not be able to ship his phone till Friday at the earliest. So he was upset since he was one of the first to buy with Sprint. And that Sprint was saying this was a messup between Apple and all cell phone providers/carriers in the US. So the phones that were to ship to someone's house by Friday. Will not ship out till Friday. He called this morning. I thought it was interesting that he was getting similar info that i have read on this thread about AT&T.

By the way he never got an answer as to what they meant by error or mistake between Apple and its distributors or cell carriers. As to what that meant.

I went to my local AT&T store this weekend and while there asked about the preorder. He couldn't give me a clear day when it would be in (7-14 days?) but he did say you won't be charged for the phone until day of delivery. I want to preorder but want to sell my 32gb 4 thru ebay. I would have until Oct. 1st to ship my phone in...do you think by then the 5 should arrive if I order today?
