You were likely misled by at&t's text, as did many people. "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade..." doesn't tell you what kind of upgrade you're eligible for and you're likely eligible for the early iPhone upgrade ($199 + $250).

No, it can't be that, because I didn't rely on a text. I went to the website and clicked to upgrade my phone, and was presented with phone options including an iPhone 4S for $199.

Edit to add: It also showed my ability to buy an S3 for $199. So at least some of us launch-day subsidized 4S owners are getting the full subsidy. Based on what I'm seeing here, now.

In 12 months every other year (rather than every year as in the past)? Got a source/link?

At least that's better than losing the ability to upgrade every 12 months entirely.

Another way to get the best every year. Take out another line (as in family plan) for an additional $10 per month but don't use it. That comes out to $120 per year. That way you get the full discount every year by device swapping between the two lines (use a dumbphone with no data for the other line). Sell the old one (jailbroken and unlocked) every year to make up the cost difference.

Does this require paying for the data and voice plan??

Do me a favor and click on Upgrade Eligibility on at&t website. Do you get "You're eligible for an upgrade at a discounted price"?

Once you do the device swap and put a dumbphone on the new line you can remove the data plan. It'll still have the voice plan but you don't use it.

thanks.. and how would this affect my current plan? I just have one line with unlimited data

"Great news! You qualify for an upgrade with a new 2-year commitment."

Hmmm we're getting there although still a bit ambiguous. You might be the first person.

On apple's website will they let you select another 4S for $199?

They'll transfer the unlimited plan to the iPhone 5.

I was worried they would make me get rid of my data plan when adding a line. especially with these new shared data plans.

My plan is what you've done - add a line, pay the extra 9.99 / month and switched the newly added line to a dumbphone

Yes, indeed! Using all of my usual AT&T information.

Exactly, this is why I am either staying with AT&T as long as they honor my unlimited, or switching to T-Mobile.

I don't see AT&T removing our unlimited data plans anytime soon, unlike Verizon and the tactics they are using to get people off of them. T-Mobile is a good option as they still have unlimited data and have since stopped throttling customers with unlimited data. I use T-Mobile once in a while with my extra prepaid line and their coverage is generally pretty good.

HMM, Very interesting! So I decided to check on Apple's website too by choosing to replace a phone, and it shows me this (October 8th being what stands out) Is this false information? Thanks in advance!

P.S.: I'm not even eligible for an early upgrade from AT&T, but yet Apple says I will be on October 8th! (1 year since I bought my 4S using an early upgrade)

This is what AT&T says when checking their upgrade tool.. just worded differently.

and if not, what does it say? call *639#

troop, can we ask about your level of AT&T service? I have unlimited texts, unlimited data, and I believe I'm on the 900 minute plan with rollover. Comes out just shy of $130/month. I believe in years past we were able to determine that the amount you spend each month for your bill affects your early upgrade eligibility.

My bill is $76.23 per month for 450 minutes, unlimited text, and DataPro 2GB. I have a 23% FAN discount is why it's $76.23

That's an awesome deal! But I think it might help explain why customers like me get a fully subsidized price each year while others have to pay more? Not that I agree with it - just as a possible explanation.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome, but I may be jumping ship to Verizon this time around.

I'm not sure why people's upgrade eligibility appears to be all over the map; seems very random.

I tried that last night and it gave me the same result (only November 8th instead of October), but when I went to buy it, it went back up to $849.

Edit: Tried it just now and it does say my cheaper upgrade price is $649 on October 8th. Doubt it'll stick, but it's possible that AT&T is bumping again. Either way I'll spend the extra $200 now and get more than that back when I get the next one next year.

It's throttled down to an unusable speed after 3 GB, so it's not really an advantage.

After 5gb. How is that not at advantage?

And what are the throttled speeds anyway?

A) sprint offers that too...
B) not all of us have unlimited data, and in my post, I was speaking about my situation.

That's why I said... those with unlimited data. :)

...and Sprint's service is worse than AT&T and Verizon.

How did you go about it? I pay $200 a month on my bill and I am not eligible till May 2013. I won't pay $550 for my next iPhone, and I know I won't sell it for that much on eBay.

I just called our local ATT business rep here in Phoenix and told them I have a possible of 4 iphones that need upgrades. He said that he would need to get secured manager approval and he emailed back saying he did. I did mention that 2 of the lines I could pay 125$ ETF fee and start new lines if I had to pay a $250 upgrade fee.

----------

That's meaningless until you tell us what those full upgrades are eligible for. Plenty of 4S owners have called and were able to receive full upgrade if they wanted a new phone other than the iPhone. They just won't do it for the iPhone 5.

Why would i call at this time for anything other than the iPhone 5???? Yes I called him for iPhones 4s to iPhone 5 upgrades.....
