thanks.. and how would this affect my current plan? I just have one line with unlimited data

Your situation is a little different. With only one line, in order to add another you will have to switch to a family plan (not shared data plan). The minimum minutes for a family plan is 550 minutes for $50.00 for the primary line and then $9.99 for the second line. You could still keep your unlimited data for $30 and unlimited texting for $20. So your monthly total would technically go up $20.

Hmmm we're getting there although still a bit ambiguous. You might be the first person.
.

No, he's not the only person. I get the same texts if I dial *639# and I bought 2 4S's on launch day (one for me, one for my wife). Plus, I can go on to the AT&T wireless website and have the choice to buy a subsidized iPhone (same with my wife's line). So, that's two more people with early eligibility.

Besides, getting a text that says "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $36 upgrade fee" really isn't that ambiguous at all. The wording of a text like this hasn't changed in years and in previous years, it only meant one thing: you're eligible for a subsidized upgrade. Period.

I know it really pains you to see that current 4S owners are indeed being moved up, but it's reality. Deal with it.

It doesn't pain me at all as I have another line to device swap for $199. It's just that GeekLawyer is the first member to confirm it via at&t and apple websites. Now it looks like more people including you are in fact eligible for the full discount after 1 year and it seems to be a minority group. Congratulations if you're one of them.

Mine got changed to 10-27-12 but for an iPhone

I wasn't due for an upgrade till next year on 10-13
"You may qualify for a full discount on an iPhone upgrade on 10/27/2012."

When did yours change?

I don't know. I just decided to check when I saw this thread. I upgraded last year on black friday. This isn't the first time AT&T did this. I remember when I got my iPhone 4, I was on contract for 7 months and they pushed up my upgrade eligibility.

Hmmm, did you sign a 1 year contract and what kind of account do you have with them?

I have been an AT&T customer for 6 years and I have never come across a one year contract. When I upgrade it's always two years. I have a FAN account which I'm eligible for a corporate discount through my employer thats about it.

They did this back in 2010 with the iPhone 4 and I wasn't the only one that got their upgrade date pushed up.

Remember, this early upgrade is only for an iPhone if I wanted to upgrade for something else I wouldn't be eligible.

Enjoy your new iPhone. :D :D
I'm crossing my fingers for mine.

Discount

We have 5 iPhones on a Family Plan. One is already upgradeable at Full Discount. 1 is Full Discount on 11-5-12. Three are May 2013 for Full Discount.

I fully expect the phone that is eligible for Full Discount on 11-5-12 to move to Currently Eligible for Full Discount between now and 9-12-12.

This has been the process since our first phones in 2007. As long as your in the 18-20 month window you should be ok. If it does not show up, and your a customer with many lines a phone call will do it. Once again, being within the 18-20 month window.

Probably going to change to shared data Family Plan anyway. For us we save $20 a month.:apple:

Yeah, I don't think it's a glitch. It's what happens every year ahead of the new release.

Still not like last year when a lot more people were eligible. It seems to be a much smaller group and it isn't automatic that if your bill is over $100/mo the primary line is eligible like in the previous years.

I am getting the following message and I have a family plan with 2 iphones

Good news! You qualify for early iPhone upgrade at a higher price. A full discounted upgrade may be available on 05/08/2013.
Some services on your current device may be replaced by similar iPhone services during upgrade.

Sounds like they want to take away my unlimited plan?

AT&T will not remove your unlimited data plan. They will simply change your data plan over to a Unlimited 4G/LTE data plan, which is only a matter of changing a code in their system. You and the rest of us with grandfathered unlimited data plans will keep them even if we upgrade to the new iPhone.

I just got off the phone with Corporate. They said NO ONE with a 4S is early for an ANY subsidization right now. They said early upgrades ($200 discount) for iPhones are offered after 12 months, so myself and everyone else who bought a 4S last October will have to pay FULL PRICE if we purchase the new iPhone when it comes out later this month. I told them about all the people I know who are getting texts that they are eligible for partial subsidy ($199+$250+36) and all the people on Macrumors, and they basically repeated what they had just said. They are essentially calling me a liar. This is pretty frustrating.

There is still a discount built into the price of the phone even if you don't recognize it. The price you quote as $485 and is far less, I am sure, that the regular price of the iPhone would be. The FULL RETAIL PRICE (NO COMMITMENT OF THE 16GB IPHONE 4S WAS $649. So, built into the price you quoted is a discount of $164. No much, I agree, but with all the cheap pieces of all the plastic pieces of junk from XXX, XXX, XXX, and Sxxxxng are cheaper, by far and all are highly discounted. Two views come from this in my mind--there is no quality of mass producing anything and second, you get what you pay for.

I am trading my 4S to Gazelle.com and am getting back more than I paid for it, albeit, the subsidized price and 299+36+250 (the $36 was waived for me) is still a savings of over the $749 non-subsidized price.

Everyone's situation is different and many of the complaints are that the monthly price does go up. In my situation, since I not only was paying for the 450 minute plan, i was also paying an extra $20 for unlimited calls for the MicroCell. That $20 is a big part of what is dropping off from my bill.

This is what AT&T says when checking their upgrade tool.. just worded differently.

and if not, what does it say? call *639#

All of this is very confusing. First, Apple has no idea if you are eligible for an early upgrade because it's the carrier's call, not Apple's. Second, I find it odd that no one on here seems to be "quoting" the total message from *639#". And, there is definitely some confusion--the store seems to say one thing, *639#, another, etc. My *639#" still says I have to pay the $250 + new 2 year commitment. Thankfully, I was able to do a cross-upgrade, but come next year at this time, I won't have anything available unless AT&T just gifts me as they did the first two years. Oh, well, we will just have to see, but will call corporate to hopefully find out the truth. Are some getting it or not. If so, why am I being left out this year.

yeah nothing is unclear until Apple officially announces a product.. so it's a waiting game.

That's interesting. *639# matching exactly what's online and what OPUS (the in-store system) says on my account.

Second, I find it odd that no one on here seems to be "quoting" the total message from *639#".

The total message is overlong and not really necessary. The most important part is one of the following:

1) You may select equipment at our full retail pricing (self explanatory)
2) You qualify for an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment ($250 + $199)
3) We can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment ($199)

And, there is definitely some confusion--the store seems to say one thing, *639#, another, etc. My *639#" still says I have to pay the $250 + new 2 year commitment.

That seems to be the case with some people. It's clear cut only if the website and *639# say the same thing. What does clicking on Upgrade Eligibility on at&t website say for you?

Are some getting it or not. If so, why am I being left out this year.

Nobody really knows. It used to be that if your bill is over $100/mo the primary line automatically gets the full upgrade after 12 months. It's not the case this year and the criteria for whether you get full, partial or no upgrade is currently unclear.

They didn't do it for iPhone 4 folks when the 4S came out... I know cause I didn't get the bump... and subsequently held out for the 5...

I did. I bought my 4 on launch and was able to upgrade at full price cut to the 4S. I do pay over $150 a month on my bill so many that was why. This year though, so such luck. I may call and ask like others have done to see if I will have any luck, but otherwise I will hold out till the next iPhone.

LOL... I just logged into myAT&T and it popped up that I "may be eligible" for an upgrade. Then when I checked it, it said I am not eligible until May. Doesn't matter. I am cross upgrading from a different line.
