Site has changed 3 times in the last 3 or 4 weeks. Seems like ATT isn't that anxious to keep their customers.

They already have customers that are under contract. Whether you upgrade or not doesn't matter to them as long as they have you under contract currently.

For those you who don't believe me (That ATT is now making people wait at least 20 months before their next upgrade and getting rid of the 12 month upgrade for those $99 primary lines).

Here are some links. They basically are following Verizon's upgrade policy change that Verizon made back earlier this year.

Here's the official ATT upgrade 20 month policy link:

Here's a post over on howard forums with this 20 month upgrade cycle policy

Read this post about a guy who's has a $99 plus primary line and was shocked he can't get an upgrade till 02/2013 now.

Eh, I'm not going to worry about it. If it has changed now, it can always change again, and who knows what the future holds?

The big difference being that this is the iPhone.

AT&T upgrade dates are no longer static like they were before. They are now dynamic.

It has nothing to do with the iPhone release dates, or anticipated dates. It has nothing to do with the fact that anyone has an iPhone now.

It has everything to do with how much money you spend on your plan, data, etc. AT&T has changed the upgrade procedure and therefore if you want an iPhone or Android phone, it doesn't matter.

It's all based on your account history and is evaluated on a regular basis by their computers. Based on their formula, your date is subject to change dynamically as frequently as month to month.

Because I have several lines so I can use both an iPhone and a couple of Androids, my illegibility is around the 12 month period. This is how I get a new iPhone annually at the upgrade price.

I bought a 3GS in Dec 2009, and I am currently eligible for an upgrade. I used my wife's upgrade to get an iPhone 4 when they finally released the white one earlier this year.

Mine changed again! It now says: "We are sorry, but this line is not eligible for an iPhone upgrade."

:(:(:(:( WHYY!?

Mine says that as well. They're definitely in the process of updating their systems...whether this is routine or out of the norm, who knows.

Mine is 12/4 which is a exactly a year from when I got my iPhone 4. Hopefully they change it, but if not then I shall wait till then to upgrade.

How much is your total phone bill is?
It is not how much the phone bill is, the key is the Monthly Recurring Charges (MRC).

Each and every line has it own MRC that is calcuated on a 3 month rolling average. So often just making a change today does not reflect in a magic adjustment in the upgrade eligiblity.

Your individual line has to have a MRC that is greater then 99.99 per month to qualify for a 12 month device upgrade.

This MRC is based on the line's individual rate plan + select features ( AT&T gets to select the features that are include ). Yes, the $30 iPhone data plan is considered a feature and it is included.

Also, for a FamilyTalk rate plan make sure that you subtract the additional $9.99 for the first add-a-line to get the true base rate plan.

Note: A FAN or National Account Discount is not part of the calculated MRC, so there is no negative to having a discount.

Summary: Always make sure your iPhone is the anchor line on a FamilyTalk rate plan! Dont' just assume, check your bill. This sometimes is switched when you renew a contract line on a FamilyTalk rate plan, that way the rep or agent get's the biggest credit.

What if you have 2 iPhones on the family plan? Will only one be eligible for an upgrade?

mine is still the same though my friends updated twice today and now says he is available. So i wouldn't stress about it...

First, the both will at some point be eligible for an equipment upgrade. However, it depends on the MRC of each line so don't expect both of them to be eligible at the same time since they have each have a different MRC.

So for a FamilyTalk rate plan, the iPhone that is the primary line will have an earlier "upgrade" eligiblity date. Using my example above you can expect the anchor line to get a full equipment upgrade every 12 months but the add-a-line might qualify for the full equipment upgrade at about 20 months into the two year contract. All add-a-lines have very low MRC do to the base add-a-line rate plan being only $9.99 per month.

So I'm eligible for an upgrade and I plan on pre-ordering the i5. I'm going to pass down my i4 to my Father who is in dire need of an upgrade(he uses a motorola razr from 2004). When he gets a data plan, is he basically signing a 2 year contract? or No?

No he is not.

No he is not.

No contract for your father just because he changes from a Razor to your iPhone 4, he is just adding an iPhone data plan.

He would get a new two year contract if he get a new "free" or subsidy phone from AT&T ( just like you will by upgrading to the next iPhone ), that is what really drives the contract requirement.

However, if you go to an agent or AT&T Corporate Retail location double check that they don't help your father out by starting a new contract.
