I have been an AT&T subscriber for 7 years... Have a four line family plan, three data plans and unlimited SMS...

I bought my iPhone 4 on launch day and extended my contract...

I am not eligible for an upgrade until FEBRUARY 22nd 2012...

WTF!?!?!??!?!

Question, will I be able to upgrade to iPhone 5 if I upgrade to iPhone 4S now?

Say the iPhone 5 comes out at this time next year, if I upgrade to the iPhone 4S from iPhone 4 right now will I be eligible for upgrade to the iPhone 5?

I bought my iPhone 4 on launch day and I was eligible for upgrade in February, so I had my iPhone 4 for only 8 months before I was offered an upgrade

Will I get the same treatment next year?

NOTE: Since I pay over $100 per month, apparently this is what AT&T does with all of its customers that do.

You want to do what?

Are you saying you want to use an AT&T (micro) SIM card on Verizon's network (which doesn't use SIM cards)?

so its not 1 radio for all network? i thought its a world phone, are they releasing GSM and CDMA separately again?

This is ********. All three of my lines have been pushed back for upgrade eligibility.

Many of us have been upgrading our iPhones with every release since 2007 and now our eligibility has been pushed back for no reason, even though we've been eligible for an upgrade since June. I confirmed this when I considered buying the white iPhone.

I don't pay nearly $200 per month for them to pull some ******** like this, while also providing **** for coverage, and I'm sure a lot of others don't appreciate it either.

i think it should work verizon will be extremely mad but i think it should work

technically speaking itd work but his mom would still have to sign a 2 yr contract and for him to activate he would have to sign a 2 yr contract with att so thered be 2 contracts for iphone

They want to make as much money as possible, which doesn't necessarily mean the same thing.

i don't see a difference. if i pay $200 + $250 to at&t now, apple gets $599 or whatever full retail is. if i wait untill 2/23/2012, i pay $200 to at&t and apple gets $599 or whatever full retail is. or i pay $200+175 to jump to verizon, apple still gets $599 or whatever it is, but from verizon instead of at&t...i see no difference

My last inquiry said I am eligible 12/1. Just tried again and fingers are crossed.

There is some misunderstanding here.

The iPhone 4S is one world phone in that it will work on all frequencies, CDMA and GSM. There were two separate iPhone 4 models for GSM and CDMA.

Now, any iPhone (4, 4S etc) bought through a carrier contract will be locked to that carier. If you want to buy a contract Verizon iPhone 4S, it will only work on Verizon, unless you unlock it. It's the same way that a contract AT&T iPhone 4 won't work on any other GSM networks unless unlocked.

No. You cannot use a carrier locked phone on a different carrier unless you unlock it.

Let's say I buy a factory unlocked phone and use it on AT&T until my contract expires. Would Verizon allow me to activate that phone on their network?

Just called to cancel and they want $440 for all three of my lines. I might just do it only because they decided to screw EARLY ADOPTERS and that makes no sense to me. I'd rather pay $440 + $399 and jump ship to Verizon, even though I don't like Verizon at all. Hell, I'd save money per month after that anyway.

Got the response and it still says 12/1 :(

AT&T customer reps have no idea what's going on  I just called them to see if they could bump my upgrade date, and they said they couldn't do that because it's an iPhone yada yada yada. Then I asked them if they'd rather have me cancel my contract and go to Verizon, since that would be cheaper, to which she said "No, because you would have to pay the ETF and $199 for the new phone, while here you ONLY pay the $250. This includes the early upgrade fee AND the new phone."

I'll go to an AT&T store tomorrow, hopefully they know what's up...

Date couldn't be pushed back because it's an iPhone as well.

I threatened to leave since my term fee is $175 per line so it would be cheaper to go to Verizon than spend $250 extra to upgrade my other 2 lines. No go what so ever.

I'm hoping they announce maybe a special upgrade option for AT&T customers or even allow an early upgrade option where you pay $36 or whatever. Time will tell.

How can we get an article posted on the front page about this?

I feel like if this was getting some bigger blog mentions, that at&t would change their tune...

Even if there isn't a factory unlocked model sold in this country it will be in other countries. For example, Belgian and Italian laws required unsubsidized phones to be unlocked

That doesn't mean anything. You can buy unsubsidized phones that are unlocked in the United States. So back to the original statement, nothing has been said of an unsubsidized/unlocked iPhone 4S, anywhere. Up until recently, Hong Kong was the only place one could buy a factory unlocked iPhone from Apple retail.

I don't want to speculate on something that doesn't exist, but I don't see what you described as being a problem. Granted, you would have to pay a premium for such a device, and activation fee(s) when you finally get it to Verizon, so it may not be worth it. Given that plenty of people would want to be jumping between the carriers, an unlocked phone may not be offered factory unlocked in the United States anytime soon.

Edit - Seems like a CDMA-activated iPhone 4S can only be used on a CDMA network. http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

All the way at the bottom of the page:

CDMA available only if iPhone 4S is sold and activated for use on a CDMA network.
