I disagree. I don't think anyone's life is worth taking over losing some stuff. Now if they threaten to harm someone that's a different story.

Right....cause i see so many times on the news that when someone breaks into a house, they don't try to kill the family if they are present. Seriously, we have become such pathetic wimps in this day and age. If someone breaks into your house and you have the chance to take him down, you do so. They are a criminal. forget this call the police crap. They know what they are doing. I don't believe any of the BS about insanity, depression, etc. A human being knows between right and wrong. Another reason we are so broke today. We have to pay so much money for all the criminals that are locked away in prison. I can tell you this, someone breaks into my house, and i catch them in the act, they are dead (unless they plead for their life and allow to be arrested by the police).

Between what? Nations?

It's a prefix, a modifier. It means "between" or "among".

"International" - between/among nations.
"Internet" - between/among networks.
"Interplanetary" - between/among planets.

Brush up on your language. Kinda makes arguing on the Internet difficult when you don't even know what "internet" means.

Kudos to MR and the mods for their hands off approach to this thread.

Seems unfair to kill someone for robbery. Yes they're breaking the law, but only deserve a prison sentence. Do you really really think someone should be shot and killed for attempting to steal a few laptops and smash a few windows? If you do then man you have issues.

If it's my window OR laptop...yes I do. You assign value to your property, and I'll assign value to mine.

Loving this. I'll add to the lesson -

Intra vs Inter

Inter = between/among
Intra = Within

Interstate Highway - Highway between/among states
Intrastate Highway - Highway within a state

Internet = Between/among networks
Intranet = Within a network

Learning is fun!

(not that anyone was debating the meaning of inter/intra, just adding to the education)

So such as my corporate network that has places all over the world? Oh wait, that's an Intranet. There is only one Internet and it is international. Can we get back on topic now?

"I've never seen a mall security guard carrying a gun."

Methinks you're going to see an increasing number of them doing just that in the years and decades to come.....

Funny, you left out the 88 other countries with higher homicide rates.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

I was demonstrating that the US and Western Europe- two areas of the world that are supposed to be amongst the most developed have drastically different homicide rates.

We expect high homicide rates in places like Colombia or Rwanda, unfortunately. I'm pointing out that the US is sitting well above Western Europe, Australia, Japan etc.

Plus, that post was a direct response to someone saying he expected the homicide rate to be similar in the US and Europe.

The guard would have put himself in less danger if he had found cover instead of firing back. If it is hand guns being used the chances are the guard got lucky with the head shot. The criminals could have equally got lucky.

I personally think the lonesome guard was stupid to approach three burglars.

"Because of a series of thefts, Apple now places armed security guards inside all its stores."

No wonder the criminals brought weapons.

Are... are you serious? No really, I want to know.

I guess I could safely rob your house judging from your stance on the issue. Awesome.

Wait… what?
Like you're off to the movies? Going shopping?

Keys, check.
Wallet, check
Glocke (or whatever you are "packing"), check
iPad, check
50 round box of ammo, err, check.

Jeesus. Planet You Es Ei.

It in my car. It's not that big, go to Wal Mart and look at a box of 50 rounds of 9 mm.

...If guns didn't exist, things like this wouldn't be happening.

And only Native Americans would be living in the Americas. Also, if microchips didn't exist, there'd be no apple store to rob. And, if playing "let's imagine alternate realities where bad things might not happen" was a viable career, we'd be rich.

Yeah - because "guard" means to hide and cover and let people take whatever it is you are guarding.

Oh wait - my dictionary says it means to watch over and protect. Interesting.

Good for that guard, it looks like his training paid off.

As usual, lots of ignorant comments here on MR and it sounds like a LOT of people here do not realize that "mall cops" who carry firearms aren't the same as a regular "mall cop". They aren't even similar in the least. Most of them are ex-military or retired LEOs.

So, it is sad that some fool lost his life for trying to steal, but it is great news that the guard didn't lose his life while doing his job.

I don't know the guy's job description and I am pretty sure you don't either so we should not speculate on what is expected from him. I just feel there would have been a better outcome for all if the security guy phoned the police and there had not been a 3 to 1 ratio.

Apple: Alright a few smashed windows, some temporarily stolen stock and one of their stores closed for a couple of days. This would have happened anyway.

The Security guy: No blood on his hands. There has been suggestions in this thread he will need some counseling, I am no psychiatrist but I can imagine that he will.

The burglars: Prosecuted, not dead. I believe they deserve a just prosecution and not one man taking matters into his own hands.

Obviously I don't feel the same as anyone else.

How sad,
I mean a person lost his life because of his actions, and the guard now has to live with the fact that he took a life. All for what - some iToys? Doesn't seem worth it. :(
EXACTLY!!!! WHY OVER SOME iTOYS!!!!!
Why not just GET A JOB, EARN some $$... and BUY THEM!
People like YOU are why the crime rate is so high! But if they were trying to rob you, you'd do the same thing... OTOH, NOT!
You'd probably lay there and let them take it!

This is GREAT news because these people need to be stopped... and at ANY and ALL costs!

Hang on... I'm sure there is a sentence in there somewhere...

Apple: Set a tone. Don't rob our stores or face the consequences. Less stores burglarized, no loss of revenue and potential store closures over attempted or successful break-ins.

Security: Did their job, they were successful. How do you know that the burglars didn't shoot first? If you get shot at, protect yourself or just have the perpetrators chase after you and kill you because YOU identified them and will call local LEOs. You don’t just roll over and play dead if it is YOUR job to protect something. Is that what our soldiers should do if someone starts shooting at them? Run and cover, and never fire back??? Who would protect this nation and our freedom?

Burglars: Dead, because they were dumb enough to start a firefight with someone who had proper firearms training.

Yes, you don’t feel the same as anyone else because what you think doesn’t make any sense.
