How can I check for screen "yellowing?" Is there a utility that loads a graphic, or a web site or something? I need a new MBP but I want to check right away to determine if I am experiencing this problem.

This really sucks! I just need a new Mac and don't have time to be returning crap. Hell, I don't have time to worry about returning crap...

Thanks. The thread is so long that I forgot that the link was posted

edit:
a long thread as measured against my attention span, not macrumors standards. ;)

Don't perform the test first. Only perform the test if you notice something wrong. Don't go looking for technical problems that you might never see while you are using it.

I did the test because I could tell something was wrong within the first 10 minutes of using it.

I'll notice it right away, I'm sure. I simply want to have the test ready to allow others to see it too! Hopefully I don't have a problem, but I want to be ready if I do.

OK, that vertical weirdness just happened to me. It was there after I woke my computer up. I thought it was from being cool outside so I let it warm up for a while. I even ran a few benchmarks to get it warmer. It was still there. I restarted, and it went away! Bizarre! It damn near gave me a heart attack! All is good now.

As far as the uniformity of my screen, it could be better but it isn't bad. I have the 9C81 screen, and it's slightly darker towards the bottom and a little to the right. No discoloration, though. The default color profile is definitely yellow. I tried both supercal and OSX's own calibrate utility. The supercal profile was a little too blue and over-saturated. The OSX calibration profile is just right.

I bought my Penryn MBP on Monday and exchanged it today for a new one. It was perfect except for the very, very slight white/yellowish discoloration in the lower 1/3 of the screen. I had to really, really look for it to see it. Everything else on the computer work perfectly. After two days of thinking about it, I brought it in and if the Mac Genius couldn't see it then I'd be OK with it. To my surprise he pointed it out to me! Long story short, he replaced it on the spot (with manager's approval of course) and even opened the new one to check it out himself. As luck would have it...this one seemed perfect! After he reformatted the old machine we put the two side by side with a white desktop background to see the difference. To my surprise, my old one (9C83) was slightly dimmer and had the yellowing when compared to my new one (9C81). I'm very happy with the exchange and if anyone is on the fence remember you paid $2.4K+ for your MBP and deserve the best! By the way, Apple customer support is the best in the industry.

Mine also cleared on restart, but even then I'm glad I'm shipping this back (another call to Apple, 24 hours and I should have some labels to return the damn thing. So much for a replacement by the end of this week ..), I don't think this is normal or acceptable behavior in any screen.

You shouldn't have to restart your machine in the middle of a major project because your display looks like it's in prison. Especially on a supposedly Pro machine.

17 CFL
No yellow.

However the backlight does look uneven and the bottom looks more blue.

Hello,

I'm from Germany and I've just received my new SR MBP. I read about all those "yellow tint" problems here and now I'm wondering about my screen. I don't know the intensity of the yellow tints on your screens so i uploaded two pictures of my screen in hope that you can tell me whether these are those "yellow tints" or not...

thanks a lot!

It's a little hard to see, but it does seem like you have it. I think the problem is that the white balance of your photo seems off, so it's hard to tell. It looks as though the lower portion has a yellowish tint to it that isn't there in other parts of the screen - would you say that's correct?

yeah, I completely agree with you.

I'll send it back to Apple...i can't accept such a failure on a 2000$ notebook

One thing I would try doing before you send it back is using one of the colorsync calibration profiles posted n this forum - just make sure you download one that is done for your display model! It may be that it's just a matter of calibration, but if the lower part only looks darker/yellowish, nothing can really help that except a display replacement.

Let us know how it goes!

thx

Try these, especially the one titled "customer calibration" and "Monitor Profile". I have the 9c81 and they have improved it significantly.

I originally had a Samsung display, which had the yellow tint really bad. Got it replaced it with an LG display and clear as white.

I'd hope that all the Peryn displays don't suffer from this!

Here's mine... and it's defective!!! Darn you Apple!!! I really do NOT feel like dealing with returning yet another MBP and having to reinstall everything. What a pain.

Of course they improve it significantly but the yellow tint only degrades and doesn't disappear...The damaged part of the display is definitely only the lower 1/3 in which the yellow tint appears.

Too bad. I guess it has to go back then....hope you get a good one next time. Good luck!

Has anyone had any experiences taking in their MBP about this issue in the LA area? If so, which store? I'm going to make an appointment at Topanga and wanna brace myself in case I have to deal with the "Geniuses."

But... Manufactured during Week 1 of 2007??!!

Yeah, tell me what is up with this?!?! Oh... and if anyone needs to call Applecare or whoever today, they seem to be really pushing hard on selling Applecare and what not... more so than usual.

Ah, that's the LCD manufacturing date. I guess that means that these are the same old LCDs that were used last year - nothing changed or upgraded. But we kind of knew that already given that people are still receiving yellow screens.

17" Hi -Res

Has anyone had the yellow problem with the new 17" Hi-Res screen option. That is what i ordered and it has not shipped yet, but I was just wondering.

Thank
