I wish we could get a return to the past and get the new Apple TV interface as "Front Row" on Mac's again.

For things like emulation, still nothing beats a Mac Mini (or a PC of any kind) and OpenEmu (or lots of other standalone options).

If / when the Apple TV gets jailbroken, do you think there is any chance of seeing Dolphin Emulator (Gamecube / Wii) on the ATV - is the A8 chip even capable of running it?

I would imagine we would be able to get PS1 emulation since my iPad (I know its an A8X) Air 2 can run it?

More emulation will come.

I'm betting OpenEmu will beat Provenance to the N64/PS1 game. Both are multi-emulator interface/wrappers, but OpenEmu seems to be more advanced on the emulator front, while Provenance is more advanced on the iOS/tvOS ecosystem front. And once OpenEMU is on ATV, GC/Wii support will come shortly after they add it to their supported list (which is in progress).

Also, it will likely not need a Jailbreak, as sideloading is a fair bit easier to support for open development movements than distributing auto-installers via repositories.

But as I said above, apps get much better access to the hardware with a jailbreak and can run much faster.

i want to be able to switch between consoles like this android front end emulator

At 1:25 you press L2 and a sidebar slides out and you choose a console
And you can search from another hidden menu bar that slides down
I created various provenances based on the console and changed the name and backdrop etc. One benefit is that you will have less than the 200mb for many systems.

So nobody cares that this is stealing money from the people who worked hard on developing those games decades ago? I mean it's fine if you own the games on the system, but otherwise it's just plain stealing.

I got the nvidia shield tv today
This has been a pain in the ass , if you think the Apple TV OS and remote sucks wait until you use this
The remote has no volume button , you have to slide up and down to change the volume and that don't work most of the time , the remote is too thin

Setting up the shield tv I had a lot of trouble login to my google account I have long password , they give you the option to use your phone or laptop to enter a pin and login
Safari on the iPhone/iPad/Mac did not work , there was no box to enter the pin in the webpage
So I'm thinking google just hates safari , so I install chrome on my iPad/iPhone and still see no box to enter pin on the android tv web page .
I went to Mac I thought maybe is because my network is hidden so I make that visible , no work

To get this working I had to install Firefox on my Mac

Next problem : installing apps from google play store
Kept getting errors (wait 30 minutes) and network disconnect on the shield play store
I had to install the apps from the iPad Google play website

Another problem
The shield remote and controller were almost dead out the box, low battery

Let's get to the emulators

I read the shield can use exfat and fat32 hardrives , I decided go with exfat (no 4gb limit)

I connect my 1tb external drive and the shield sees the drive as 196mb

Right now I'm in the process of making the drive fat32 and putting roms back in the drive , that's going to take a few hours

I'll report back when I get everything working, on the positive side I won't miss AirPlay
Google cast works with Protube and other apps , you see the cast icon if the app supports it

I own close to 100 classic games in their original form, I just don't have room to set up all of my consoles.

Just ordered my cable from Amazon. :)

Idk if it has been mentioned in the thread or not but just a FYI:
Make sure the type c cable has passed the tests for proper power through it and this spec complaint. Basically if you are buying a type c to type a usb cable it needs to have a 56k resistor so that it doesn't pull more power than your MacBook can handle since type a cant handle that much as a type c port on many chargers and prob macs and this can damage your Mac.

You are just transferring data but power might still be passable w the type c so the danger still stands IMO.

I had 3 that I had gotten for free and all three had the wrong resistor so I Trashed them. I have ordered three more since I was able to get a discount on a few from Amazon.

In short: get a type c to type a cable that is approved by Leung (see his Amazon reviews, he is a google chrome dev) or other reviewers that have done the actual tests on their Google devices for the cable to be spec complaint.

If your cable is a type c to type c then no worries. But I assume most of us don't own the new MacBook which is the only one from Apple w it.

To add to the discussion: you can't really buy the original carts from first parties anymore so you can't pay the devs or whomever in most classic carts. Hell many of the studios don't exist or have changed hands or distribution of assets.

Thanks for the info. Cancelled the order and will order an approved cable.

I received the Horipad Ultimate yesterday. It controls the ATV, but I can't get it to work in the ROMs. Is there something I need to change or enable?

Go in to settings and make sure controller 1 is not the Siri remote

If is the horipad and still don't work

Remove the app from the background and reopen provenance with the horipad not the Siri remote

Also you haven't been here since the first 2 pages , there's been a few updates and fixes
You should update the app
And make sure it says release not debug at the bottom of provenance settings

I haven't been to this thread in a while. I read through most of it but didn't find a clear answer on this. Has the lag been fixed yet? Changing the tv to gaming doesn't do anything. And yes I updated to the new provenance.

Do you have lag in all games and all platforms? It seems to be mostly restricted to NES games for me.

And only some ROMs. For instance, Link to the Past is great, no lag at all, but Super Mario World is laggy as hell and unplayable. However, the version of it in the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World ROM (which includes the NES versions) is much better. Not great, playable probably, but way way better than the stand-alone ROM.

So, the lag is likely due to the emulator used for SNES, and only for some ROMs at that. Not something Provenance can likely fix.

Btw I'm returning the nvidia shield tv
I had too many problems with it
After spending a couple of hours trying to find out why my external drive was not showing 1tb on the shield, turns out the shield can't read 2 partitions on a drive and whenever I formatted my drive it would create a hidden small partition , I had to choose Apple master in disk utility

It was other things like the remote not recognizing my ok presses sometimes and the controller having a squeaky dpad minutes after taking it out the box

But the final thing that made me return it
The shield tv has no option to change rgb full/limited and ycbcr , the default on the shield is rgb limited and with my tv the picture quality looks too dark and blurry
Even turning the brightness up on the tv didn't help
And my tv has no option to change that

On the Apple TV I use ycbcr and on the ps4 I use rgb full

At the end of the day I wasn't happy with my purchase

As much as people make fun of Apple for this " it just works " line I believe this to be true now
