Can't see the 2010 Mac Pro not having this problem... same chipset etc.

As for your screenie, nice to see iStat Menus working nicely. Does it come up with CPU A for you? It comes up with CPU A + CPU B here and I've only got one CPU :p

Then we hope the 2010 Mac Pro is audio plagued as well, if that helps gets us a fix.

iStat Menus came up as you see it - with CPU A & CPU B for temperature current power, but only CPU B in Voltages, Boosters 1 & 2 for Fans.

Concorde, with your FanControlDaemon, what permissions should it have?

Exactly.

The '09 board could be used with a firmware update to include the microcode for the new parts. The chipset and ICH10 will be carried over to the new models, as there's no new parts to take their place. Intel designed them to be used on LGA1366, and will go for a minimum of 2 years.

So the problem WILL carry over to the 2010 models, unless Apple solves the issue prior to their release with an update for OS X SL.

Can we start a campaign to coincide with the 2010 Mac Pro launch. Shouting that it is audio corrupted like the 2009 MP. The idea being to use the threat of lost new system sales to get Apple to look into the problem.

Apply these permissions to the entire folder...

If the issue relates to the actual audio drivers, my fear is that the new Mac Pro may have a different audio controller which is properly supported, leaving ours forgotten..

It's happening with other devices though, such as USB and FW audio, as well as FW HDD's, according to various posts. So that lends me to think it's not Core Audio, but the ICH10 drivers (Southbridge) or possibly the chipset drivers (X58/5520). Of the two, the Southbridge drivers are far more likely, as that's what the USB, FW, Audio chip, and PWM controller attach to (a few others), which are what's been affected.

Can't believe this.

If this happened, Apple would make a fool of itself.

Can you imagine the Microsoft ads? ("What's using more energy than your electric heating? answer: A MacPro, playing an MP3 song )

Sky news in the uk have a tech feature everynight.

Somebody who knows the ins and out might be worth contacting sky and telling them the problem, as well as highlighting the energy element as well as apple have supposedly gone green.

Any thoughts?

Edit: Nevermind!

Do tell lol I know its unlikely they would take any notice but anything is worth a shot to get apple acknowledge the problem.

Is it still worth calling applecare still over this matter as i'll be doing a clean install next week.

Edit: Hahaha had another call from applecare saying that its "normal" for tasks to take longer when playing an MP3 as CPU cycles "are used up".

ITS AN MP3 it uses like 0.1% of the CPUs actual power combined by the fact IT DOES NOT HAPPEN IN WINDOWS.

Oh well.

I will be getting a call on monday to discuss options.

I can't believe no sites have paid an interest in this.

Has anybody sent a message to macrumours and had a reply?

Concorde Rules, i'm based in the u.k as well so if you need any help or second user to verify anything i'll help.

Definitely. ;) So this possibility might be adequate motivation to solve it prior to the 2010 models shipping to users. :)

I like it. Needed a good laugh. :D

I listen constantly to music while working on my computer, and can feel your pain.

Honestly, I couldn't imagine they aren't already working at it. Seems to be one oft hose crazy things that show up sometimes in technology, where software and hardware cause weird and unforeseeable side effects to happen.

I keep my fingers crossed your Mac Pro music problems will get solved.

Soon.

Someone should let Microsoft know! The "I'm a PC" guy will be wearing comfortable clothing and be in a nice, comfortable setting while the "I'm a Mac" guy will have the fan blowing on him while he sweats profusely. The headline says "You thought Vista was bad?" LOL

I don't have an '09 MP, as I decided to build my own when the MP wasn't capable of doing what I wanted (really specific though). The compromises to make it acceptable where too expensive, and not worth the effort. So it went back.

I could imagine a "A Clockwork Orange" scenario. Only, instead of watching movies he's listening to music.

You're building a hackintosh? Very interesting.

What exactly couldn't the 2009 Mac Pro do that you wanted him to do?

I guess stuffing in 12 3.5" hard drives. There is no way to do that in a Pro, but with a decent Lian Li (that have an equal build quality by the way, got the SL73 SL myself), that's absolutely no problem.

Drives, RAM, power supply, PCIe slots, there are so many ways in which the Pro is not as upgradable as a PC.

seen the light eh? i wonder if the problems happen on an equivalent hackintosh build.

I'm still holding out hope for a fix in 10.6.3...

More specifically, people familiar with Friday's beta say it includes an update to QuickTime X that, when finalized, will improve security and compatibility while simultaneously enhancing overall reliability. The release will also include tweaks that aim to enhance the performance of Apple's 64-bit Logic pro audio suite. Other planned improvements include better compatibility with third-party printers and OpenGL-grounded applications, those same people say.

Does anyone here have access to a 10.6.3 seed?

Pqp

If I get the time this weekend I can test. I started out on a hackintosh and liked the Mac so much I bought a real one. I have a hack built on a P45 with an ICH10 southbridge. Unfortunately, it's socket 775, so not an apples to apples comparison (unintended pun, sorry). The 775's don't have QPI, and there is no turbo mode or hyperthreading on my core2 Quad.

If this is a hardware issue, the only software fix would be something like smcFanControl to increase airflow over the various parts of the system. If the chip were flashable, they could do a firmware flash, but that is not something I expect from a normal update.

But, if this is just an OS X issue, as evidenced by it working right under Windows, then yes, an update could fix it. :)

Thanks for the clarity Einstein...
