seems stupid that only ONE reseller in the whole of australia has this box...and why AUS? there are many better places in the world to send the iphone to...i.e my house :D

New Apple store (the first in Australia) opening on June 19, iPhone announced for multiple carriers...of course, being in Australia I'm automatically guessing Apple wanted to send the box to me and only me, they merely got the address on the label wrong.

Oh, and about the label supposedly having to be on the side...not necessarily. I'm another that can raise my hand at having received many packages with the label placed over the opening of the box (in fact, I cannot recall a time when that hasn't happened).

dammit!

just got back from work now. No mysterious apple-box to be seen.. but i def. got my fingers crossed!

Haha, sorry. How comes there's a wall that close to you and your computer? Are you in some kind of super-tiny room? Hey, maybe I just saved your dog from a lifetime of loneliness, or something.

Back to the box... are there lots of them? If that's the only box, then either it's a display one (as I believe someone mentioned) or, you know, something else.

I was leaning against it and sitting in my chair. Yes, my dog seemed happier. It was awkward. And as a side note, to everyone, I just finished my fake label like the one on the box, and it looks exactly the same, plus an addition;) At any rate, I'll try to find a box, then post a pic later.

The box seems to be around the same size as the wireless keyboard in the background..... maybe it's not a phone at all but the fabled touchscreen tablet?!?!?!

Wow. How many of us with a computer could print that label and put it on a box?

Also, if this box is real (I doubt it seriously), how many phones could be in it considering how Apple does their packaging? I think there could be several.

NB: I'm the other MacTalk Australia admin. :)

This is fake.
A dispatch department places shipping labels on the side of boxes.
This shouldn't even be posted, as it is utter nonsense.

Anyone working in dispatch that places a label on the top or bottom of a box is in serious trouble, the printing/shipping company can lose a client by shipping boxes like this.

It's a fake people. Either photochopped or pasted together. The first thing I thought: WHERE'S the POSTAGE????

No stamp? No UPS label? No Fedex bill of duty? What gives. C'mon folks, this is just hysteria now taking over. Think. Think. Like Apple would ship a box that says do not open???? Some carrier getting $21.82 an hour really going to deliver a box like this and not just let it "fall off the truck"?

Not on the side in Australia for that size of box, send by signed courier. Actually, for that matter, I've rarely received packages, even from overseas, that had labels and con-notes on the side. It preferably goes on the top for Australian couriers. Yes, they are going to deliver it, because missing box = police investigation and fired driver (I used to work with couriers). Apple & the company that handles the movement of their stock probably requested confirmation for all the deliveries. Anyway, you can't see the sides of that box, have you noticed?

IT'S FAKE. The 2 lines of text at the bottom of the label do not follow the curve of the top of the box or the bottom of the label.

If you go to the large picture at the site, take a look at the bottom center of the white label. It's blurred. Look at the text inside the round stamp. The text nearest the edge of the label is blurred while the surrounding text is clear.

Uhh, yeah, because the photo is taken at an angle using an iPhone (ironically).

haha, I don't usually complain about fake pictures, but any high school kid with photoshop could have pulled this one off. I mean come on, if you're gonna photoshop it, at LEAST use a real box with a real label instead of photoshopping the label to the bottom of the box of all places. It looks like he tried to add a little bit of realism with an opaque factor of 85-90%ish? rofl.

It's only a couple more days guys and gals, no need for this nonsense.

It wasn't photoshopped (aside from the black boxes) just like Anthony (decryption) who runs MacTalk, along with myself, isn't going to utterly destroy MacTalk's reputation by making stuff up. You're entitled to think otherwise, though. Incidentally, the photo was taken a day before it was posted. There wasn't originally a plan to post a box as news. People seem to find boxes from Apple, shiny or brown, entertaining it seems.

As for nonsense, that's what 99% of the internet is. Yes, we don't really need pictures of brown boxes, but it's been a slow week, it's broken the monotony. Anyway, what would YOU do if a mate was receiving brown boxes under NDA a couple of days before WWDC?

NDA's are scary. Nobody would dare open it.

The recipient of the box absolutely refused to open it, even if it wasn't to be photographed. Apple would have hunted both them and us down if we had.

OK, I'm settling this. This is not real. Besides the fact it is a bad photoshop, Apple IS NOT STUPID, and WOULD NOT ship something like this before it is announced.

They do regularly. That's why an Apple store can open up the next day after WWDC or Macworld with new products. As someone in the know how scary Apple's NDA's are.

What reason would he have to lie about this? Everyone knows the 3G iPhone is coming, why wouldn't Apple start releasing info/advertising material to stores?

There are plenty of people who don't have the slightest comprehension of the logistics involved, the situation with Apple in Australia, the third parties involved and a bunch of other factors. That's normal though.

Thanks for the entertainment.

TO all those people indignantly insisting that only an idiot would post a photo of a box with the label on the bottom, who said it was on the bottom?

Looks like it's on the top to me.

And what's wrong with putting it on the top? I just got a bunch of stuff from Amazon in a similarly sized box - with the label on top. In fact every time I get something that sort of size the label is on top. It's the logical place to put it, especially if it's delicate, as the label can be read without tilting the box onto it's side or lifting it up to head height. Plus the label will be ripped when the box opened, providing absolute evidence of tampering.

lol yeah, coz something THAT cool they'd definitely send out to Re-Sellers in Australia and risk an almost certain cat-out-of-bag moment ahead of the unveiling... ;)

It's some display 3G iPhones, everyone knows they're coming next week. Chillax, people.

Give me a break, they would not send a package that early to a reseller. I am aware that stores get product before hand (duh) in order to open stores. These things are done in the dead of night generally. There is still nothing here to suggest to me that it's real.

Any time sensitive product comes with a warning like that, including movies and games. They have labels that will say something like "do not open/sell until (blank)." The companies that produce the product and ship it before the product is to go on sale have non-disclosure agreements with the retailers, and if the retailers breach that agreement, they could be sued, or lose the right to sell that company's product. It's not uncommon or stupid.

This happened with Halo 3 I think ... some people at Argos got into big trouble.

I did this in about 6 minutes. I won't bother with the box.

European resellers receive mysterious letters

OMG!!! I just got this in. At least one Apple reseller in Brussels received similar mysterious mail this morning. It's not a box but an envelope, see picture.

Although the envelope is very thin my sources confirm that the enveloppe actually contains the new version op the iPhone which is in fact much more slimmer then originally thought. You can see clearly see that this is not a hoax because Steve Jobs himself sent the letter! I also weighs very little looking at the postage stamp.

We also got a picture of the envelope as it was being delivered by the mailman in attach. Rumor goes his name is Freddy and he knows a guy that knows a guy that actually heard from another guy that the new iPhone also contains a built in pepper spray. However, this I cannot confirm.
