At my school we use fedora dual booted with xp but we are migrating to win 7 as well. We use linux for our programming classes.

As for the news, that's great, I only have 3 programs on my windows partition right now, and AutoCAD is one of them

Awesome! I hope that Solidworks will be coming to Mac OS X soon as well - I know that is a big ticket software package that lots of university engineering students use. My brother is in materials science completing his PHD and the big tool he uses is Solidworks. Maybe it is time for Apple to get the cheque book ready and approach these companies and simply ask, "How much would it cost to port your software to our platform?" then write a cheque to pay for it. When the lack of a given software title for a given platform no longer exists the barrier to 'converting' is lowered substantially.

NOt that excited. Ill get excited whren Rhino/grasshopper comes to the mac in 6 months. Autocad is dead and old news. Its not a 3d modelling program.

Meanwhile a mobile version called AutoCAD WS will be available free on Apple's App Store for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
There is a quote at the end of this article (which is actually about both the iOS and OS X versions of ACAD):
Hanspal says Autocad is also releasing technology that will make Autocad’s software available on any browser running Adobe’s Flash technology — which Apple does not support — so users can work with Autodesks software on more than just Macs and PCs.
Sort of misleading and in context they appear to be saying that Macs do not have Flash.

.... Now I just need MS Visual Studio or a like that can make C++ programmes for school...

You have been able to write C++ programs on the mMac for years. Apple's xcode is on your install DVD. Or it can be downloaded for free. Aside from that the gcc compiler is available fro free. C/C++ and Unix is all I do, 12 hours a day. Most people in that line of work are using gcc now.

Also Autodesk has a very lame licensing system. Ask how many times users have had to contact Autodesk on a daily basis to get a new license becuause the MacBook BIOS screws with their system and tehn be told its an apple issue only for apple to say its an autodesk issue. Stick with Rhino.

Rhino5 when released be based on rhinocoomon - whichmeans plugins written for Windows rhino will run on rhino fo OS X. And vice versa.

The day has finally arrived!

Yes!!!

iPad and iPhone versions as well?

Christmas shall arrive early this year, my friends.

revit next..

Saweet, hopefully this will translate into better BIM iphone/ipad implementation in the future!

Also Project Newport inclusion on an app would be aaaaawesome.

is that 6 month figure based on something credible?
autocad for mac... fantastic! if not because the software is decent (i am not alone in thinking it is horrible... ms office of 2d drawing tools) but to have one less reason to use windows.

thanks,
r.

Autodesk are so far 'up' themselves I'm surprised they can 'see' anything above the crap.
They are absolutely paranoid about their licensing, to the point of being despotic.

For the iPad and iPhone?

So what now, just like that guy that did a professional photoshoot with an iPhone 4, we are going to have some other "Apple Yahoo" design a Jet Airliner with his?

Why not a Touchscreen Nano version as well...

Well why not sign up and test the WIP for urself here, also rhino for iphone.

AutoCAD cant do NURBS. AutoCADdoes not have a rabid fanbase that actively create their own plug-ins, think RHINO iAP store. Its also 1/4 of the price of AutoCAD.

My bad I think it may be another year before a final release comes to the Mac, wish it were sooner...........

Ha, I think it'd be silly to ask for a full version of this type of design software on an iOS device, but a decent DWF viewer, or a solid BIM viewer with navigation controls would be awesome. Currently these types of apps are very limited. Eventually we'll be using augmented reality apps that will pull coordinates from a BIM and project onto a site through a camera on a tablet. Caaaaan't wait!

Check out goBIM on the App store. An ex work colleague of minde develoepd it. I havent tried it myself

Hey I've been meaning to get it, but I've heard it can only support pretty small file sizes right now? Awesome potential though!

"HELL YEAH"!

Now, keep it up and hopefully we'll see Inventor soon enough, then I dont have to boot Windows as often anymore.

O I C...

Another use for the built-in camera... more than just taking pics of your gf/bf/kids/pets... ;)

Putting native AutoCAD viewer apps on the iOS is a great idea. I can easily see user flows where there is CAD guy in a desktop and or laptop doing working 3D with iOS users on a conference call looking over the design. This can really work well in architecture and industrial design projects.
