There are some odd posts here.

This is great news. I knew it was coming, but I didn't expect a final version so soon.

I use AutoCAD and Rhino. Neither program can replace the other. They serve two different purposes. I use AutoCAD exclusively for 2D work and Rhino for 3D.

While I'm not excited about Autocad, I am excited about the possibility of Pro/E, Solidworks, etc seeing this and porting over as well. Pro/E has Unix coded versions, shouldn't be to much to port... Solidworks is only Windows, so my guess it'll take longer but it could happen. Would love to get all the major players over to the Mac. I bet it drives apple crazy to have all their hardware development done on someone else's platform.

Awesome. Another reason to move the office computer over to a Mac pro.

It's all stacking up. If this works as well as the windows version I'll be shifting to it for sure. Along with the new MS office, and now my printing setup supports macs. That's just about everything sorted that's holding back the switch.

To view AutoCAD files on the fly. It's actually a pretty neat idea.

I just wish a developer would make an app that allows you to view .obj or .fbx model files for iPhone or iPad. That'd be a pretty useful niche app.

An FBX reader would be kinda cool. Autodesk already makes a plugin that lets you preview FBX files in Quicktime for Mac/PC. I can't imaging it would be rocket surgery to get it running on an iPad/iPhone.

Also while they're at it, Motion Builder for OSX would be useful as well.

Not really odd, im just not genuinely excited about it and I want to let people know there are more friendly alternatives out there that encourage collaboration and innovation instead of an antiquated program that has draconian licensing laws. BIM is all about software agnostisim and collaboration. Its not using a single program/suite.

Autodesk is the MS of the 3D digital architectural engineering domain. They have bought up almost every innovative package out there and have tied people to their ecosystem. REVIT for instance doe snot allow you to interact with its API unless you write the plug in within REVIT.

Each to their own but there are better and cheaper alternatves out there taht deserve to be advertised. Thankfully rhino has resisted teh urge to get swallowed up by Autodesk and long may it continue.

Rhino is based on the open source OPENNurbs language.

Rhino had an iphone/ipad app out months ago.

This isn't going to be coupled with another whitepaper about how they wish OpenGL was never born is it? All Autodesk seem to do lately is complain.

I hope maxon resist the urge to be bought up. Cinema4D is a gem.

I suspect the real motive behind Mac-izing the jalopy app Autocad, that for decades retarded the architectural industry, is to win over Mac users to parent company Autodesk's Revit, their 3D modeling app that finally brings architectural tools comparable to Mac-native ArchiCad (which pre-dates Autocad). Americans, we love our Kandy-apple Kool-aid. Let's just hope Autodesk serves up a big gulp of MacRevit to their waking faithful, so Archicad will finally benefit from direct competition.

not.

As an engineer I can say THIS IS FREAKIN AWESOOOOME!!!!!

For engineering????

For stick drawings, connecting lines...

There's nothing innovative about AutoCAD and Autodesk have not innovated much in the last 2 releases. they simply consolidated the features from acquisitions rather than developing in house.

And the user interface changes are not innovations, they are simply inherent objects from the Windows XP/Vista/7 environment... look deeply into it...you will see... All the same commands are there... just tizzied up with icons and the ribbon icon arrangements...

They want people onto their acquired Revit platform rather that AutoCAD [2D nor 3D]

AutoCAD with touch interface is simply redressing to attract a new market.

I have been using AutoCAD since R 2.5 in additon to a multitude of other engineering platforms since 1985.

Exactly, rhino/grasshopper is the way to go.

Who uses orthogonal grid lines and elevations these days anyways? REVIT is so 1920.

Are your designs limited by the software or your imagination?

So, we're getting a $150.000 iPhone app from Autodesk? How sweet of them...

yeah, and rhino did it 6 months ago. I dont see them blowing foghorns and lights claiming they are the innovators, seriously, Autodesk are better placed with the windows crowd who like their buildings like pan cakes, ill stick with rhino .........................

Autocad is to <.....insert any other modern vector software name here ....>
what DOS is to Mac OSX

This is excellent news, but a little late for AutoCAD users. I will still give it a go, when available, but only because I had so much fun cracking their software protection – some play check... and I cracked software. Good times :D
