Why do people need AutoCad on iPhone & iPad?

+1 for this

autocad on the iphone or ipad is about the silliest thing I think I have ever heard. Most cad users are doing dual monitors of at least 24+ inches with pretty significant graphic hardware underneath the hood. multi-touch an autocad file is my way of guaranteeing a quickly effed up drawing pretty quickly.

...and without a proper file system and versioning system this could be a mess
for any production drawings

just because you can, doesn't mean you should

wow...good news sort of

Wow...that's good news except for the fact that it will likely be unaffordable to the average Joe and that the world of Architecture has or is moving on to BIM software like Revit. Any word on a Mac compatible Revit in the works? I don't see the value of an iOS app because if ever there was a program that requires a mouse....AutoCAD would be it.

To view it on the road? Or show it off?

This is welcome news for all of us architects and designers in the room! Been waiting months to know if this would see the light of day for iOS. This could simplify my workflow and qc efforts by a mile. Release date for the iOS 'WS' version?

yeah it does 2D as well as 3D modeling. It is one of the oldest programs out there. Glad it's returning back to Mac.

Compared to catia, pro/e and solidworks, it does pretty poorly as far as 3d goes, but it gets by. I'm glad it's back.

:apple: It Just Works... or not.

That's not Blu-ray playback, it's a terrible kludge.

It's not an apple supported format, so you shouldn't be surprised that the work-around isn't elegant. That doesn't mean it's not a way to get it to work.

I use CAD software to make wiring diagrams and panels for Electrical substations. Right now I have to drive out to the field with a roll of 2 x 3 foot engineering prints and thumb through them to verify wiring.

Now I can just bring the iPad and leave the prints in the office.

Where's all the whiners in this thread screaming "AD! AD! AD!" and threatening to leave? Oh, it's famous software so you're excited instead. I'm sure that's not the least bit hypocritical.

Hmm... Pretend you are an architect. Now bring in augmented reality. Imagine tagging your plans with GPS coordinates and walking to the jobsite with your iPad. As you walk around, the plans dynamically move with you. Yup. It will happen.

I can see other CAD/CAM companies following suit (Solidworks!?). Maybe one day Macs will be designed on MacPros.

Now if they could get the iPad with a much more sensitive screen to allow real drawing with pressure sensitivity built into the pen tip and desktop control a la Wacom Cintiq...

AutoCad is a bloated dinosaur

AutoCad is a bloated dinosaur of a software program. The world has moved to 3D CAD. AutoCad is dead.

What about special suites?

Autodesk has many specialized packages for different engineering disciplines, including civil, mechanical and electrical engineering. No mention of the specialized subroutines. I've used ACAD for 20 years and it's always been a pain to make it work on a Mac, until Bootcamp, of course. I just want to work in a Windows-free world.
