Here's crossing my fingers, but, I'll believe it when I see it, you'll probably need the latest equipment, and then it will still bog down (but I'll still probably try it)... Rhino for mac will be nice. Soon I might be able to get rid of my windows, if they can port 3d studio (I hate maya's interface)

I just wish a developer would make an app that allows you to view .obj or .fbx model files for iPhone or iPad. That'd be a pretty useful niche app.
Im sure there will be, even though Im a Maya user, Id like to see Max finally come out on OS X :)

Awesome. I remember how bad the last version of AutoCAD for Mac was. Speaking of things returning to Mac I sure with Metrowerks CodeWarrior would make a triumphant return. Hey, I can dream...

How will AutoCAD display performance be with the absence of any pro video cards in any Apple hardware crippled iGizmos and iMirrors?
No Quadros or FirePros that Autocad needs to perform properly would be a serious handicap, I would think.

There's the Quadro FX4800 Mac Edition for the Mac Pro, but otherwise I agree. Perhaps Apple should push its new BFF AMD to out some FirePro cards for the mac.

I could see three V5800's in a Mac Pro as a rendering machine ( three at about 80W comes in under the 300W PCI-e limit), but I suppose I could suffer under a single V8800 were that to be the only option.

the quadros and firepro cards are the exact same silicon as the consumer cards. only difference is more RAM and the drivers are tuned for work instead of games. Just like Apple's current drivers. whether it's a firepro or radeon is just a label on a box

"HELL YEAH"!

Now, keep it up and hopefully we'll see Inventor soon enough, then I dont have to boot Windows as often anymore.
Wait what about formZ, Swivel 3D or Electric Image...oops sorry I got caught in the hype with all these cool app names from my past ;)
Yes Swivel 3D, just dated myself :)

As a mechanical engineer, I'm looking forward to it. I'm also betting Pro/E, ANSYS and the rest will soon follow.

Like when SolidWorks announced cloud based software on any platform at last years SW World? They were running SW on an iMac.....dare to dream. I bet this is just a "we did it first" strike by ADESK.

Awesome! First Steam, now AutoCAD! This means Macs are now popular enough to have big companies change their minds.

Hey, what's with this free advert for AutoCAD on page 1? I'm sure Arn was very well compensated by Autodesk for this "story". Can we get back to Mac related news and rumors please?

See https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1004218/ for further whining in the same vein.

It's actually a pretty big deal, AutoCAD on the Mac that is. And how is an industry standard software being reintroduced on the Mac not big news?

Have you been using the beta version of Rhino for Mac? I first tried it a couple of years ago (Wenatchee) and it was extremely limited. It was making some great progress but I haven't checked it out lately to see where they are.

Happy to see Autodesk finally taking action. Hopefully it doesn't turn out like the other program I need Parallels for (Quickbooks).

That said, I think it is time for Autodesk to grow up on AutoCAD licensing. I know they have a lot to loose from casual piracy, but they either need to drop price by 20-30% (to justify purchasing 15-20% more seats) or loosen up the issues with their license systems.

...and the fact that there is no dual-licensing for Revit and AutoCAD is really stupid for architectural engineers.

The last build of rhino for mac I tried worked pretty good, it is almost ready, they just need to get plugins and external render engines to work (I use vray and maxwell render). I used rhino all last semester, but I had to switch out to windows to render, I will say though that the mac version handled large complex files better (albeit slightly).

Mbox - formz has been available for mac for a long while all version 6 packages were windows or mac.

And since no one is mentioning it and we're talking about autocad, has anyone been using vectorworks (or archicad) instead to stay on a mac workflow?

Honestly I wouldn't buy the current iPad for this as it simply doesn't have enough RAM. But what I want is a vendor supported CAD file viewer at the very least. If it can do more than view files all the better. I'm not to sure about the viability of doing engineering drawings on iPad but marking them up would be very valuable.

Especially when servicing projects in the field. The features that make iPad handy for many tasks these day are the same features that will make it valuable for viewing CAD files. Given that iPad is fast enough to permit scrolling 2D drawings around and zoom in and out reasonably fast it would be enormously helpful. In fact in some cases the ability to view CAD files on the iPhone could be advantageous.

Dave

The autocad iOS app is created to view autocad drawings on your iPad/iPhone and making minor amendments (which i assume to be commenting on basic level) - it's not a fully functioning port, so your request is answered. I really don't think Autodesk would have released a piece of software for the iPad unless it would run on the iPad...

Just so you know it's pretty expensive..

it's a professional work application, so the cost is largely irrelevant. It's a business purchase/tax deductible. Same as CS5 - they're expensive because they are professional end tools, not hobbyist/consumer toys.

Just making sure they knew.
