Hey everyone. Just wanted to chime. There seems to be a lot of hate towards this machine and it seems to be from rumors and media that are looking for click bait. Have you used the laptop enough to make such wide and sweeping accusations?

I have been using mine through the weekend (just received Thursday before Christmas) and so far I'm loving it. Here are some observations...

1. I love the keyboard. It's a little louder than the original, but I actually like the sound. While the "throw" is shorter on the keys, they have great feedback and are very precise/accurate. The keys are also larger. I'm still having some trouble with the arrow keys, but the only different between them and my 2013 rMBP is the left and right arrows take up the full height instead of being half height like the up/down arrow keys.

2. The touch pad is pretty big. It makes doing certain things in Photoshop where you're dragging a selection easier. I haven't noted any issue with palm rejection despite it's enormous size.

3. I like the TouchBar but I think I'm just not accustomed to using it yet. I know all of the keyboard shortcuts for what I need and most of my day is spent docked to a keyboard/screen so I use the shortcuts anyway. I don't think it's gimmicky, I just think it's something new to learn when my fingers are used to muscle memory operations.

4. TouchID is awesome! It makes me forget that I ever had to type a password before. One place they could improve is to offer it as an option when performing "sudo" type actions.

5. The screen is gorgeous and crazy thin for the quality and brightness. The bezel and the entire dimension of the laptop is reduced even further than a MacBook Air 13".

6. I bought a lot of dongles and have invested in a Kickstarter project that makes a "sidekick" attachment. I like the idea of just having one USB-C cable that connects all of my stuff though. I like that idea but technology is not quite there yet (since I already have old peripherals. I do have the TB3 to TB2 adapter and have it plugged into my TB2 dock and everything works perfectly. I used the HDMI dongle and that works too, etc. One qualm... the dongles from Apple are bloody huge! I wish they were a bit smaller or had longer cords or something.

But here's the truth... USB-C *IS* the future. Get used to it. It's a great port design and you simply cannot fit TB2, HDMI, USB-A or even MagSafe in such a thin package. I know, I know... you're all like "but it didn't have to be that thin" and you'd be right... but the future is going to march that direction. Sorry. USB-C is the way forward.

7. The power adapter is a little strange, not going to lie. The power brick DOES NOT have those little flanges to wrap cords around. The USB-C cord is very thick and feels like it's not going to break. Feels like a regular power cord. I like being able to plug in on either side. But here's the thing.... plugging in the laptop in the dark is almost impossible. The ports are so small, your fingers can hardly feel them to line up the USB-C cord. Of course they are reversible, but you can't find the dang ports. I think a future iteration of the tMBP should have very subtle backlighting in the ports to help you find them.

8. MagSafe – I don't really miss it except for the plugging in the laptop in the dark thing. Truth is, when I would sit with the laptop on my actual lap, most of the time the MagSafe adapter would tip and stop charging. USB-C is more secure of a connection. I have not recently had a problem with yanking the laptop of of a desk. Headphones are a bigger issue for me personally.

9. I have NOT had any stability issues with the new device. I saw some reviewers had all sorts of problems. I have not seen that at all. Everything seems to run as it should.

10. Battery Life – here's the big question right? I'm not seeing 10 hours of battery life. But then again, I wasn't expecting to. I just don't watch videos and surf the web for 10 hours a day. Anyone expecting to use the laptop unplugged while encoding video is a bit unhinged from physics and chemistry. That said, I am getting about the battery life I used to get on my 2013" rMBP. I'm going to do a real test today when I'm working to see how it goes and then try to compare with the older Mac and see what it looks like.

So that's my little review in a nutshell. I like the device. I wish it was a bit faster and had a bit better battery life as it's running about 40% faster than my 2013 model and about the same battery life. But otherwise I think it's a perfect laptop in just about every other sense.

Apple totally lost it. if any other company offers the same seamless work between phone/tablet and laptop/PC, I will jump ship. What a total mess, incremental upgrade and more than premium prices. PRO just does not exist any longer, and for hobby photographers like me, even more depressing. Come on Apple, get a grip.

It is amazing what comments B&H have to read for putting a bundled offer out there. Relevance to article is zero.

Hm, I fail to see the joke. Isn't it a standard practice that the manufacturer asks for the list price and resellers offer interesting bundles with other products?
Agree, the best way to remove your product from shelves is to sell your product to the public for less than your resellers.

The pricing of the 15 inch models plus the LG Monitor, external keyboard, trackpad, one might consider a 27 inch 5k iMac and add a MacBook. To me that would be a true pro system. Especially with the integration of handoff and cloud services.

I'll stick with my rMPB 2012 until Apple creates an actual "Pro" laptop.
"Pro" laptops need:
- A battery that last more than 3 hour when doing actual work.
- Magsafe for obvious reasons.
- An option for Nvidia GPUs since some of use use CUDA for our jobs.
- Traditional USB and HDMI ports, or include the damn dongles for free.

For some reason Tim changed the meaning of "Pro" from "work horse" to "fashion".

Or maybe we think "Pro" means Professional...

But Apple may think "Pro" means Profit.;)

Only reason we're getting the new ones is the upgraded graphics card for our designers. May be our last batch of Macs if they keep on this track. Starting to consider looking at Windows for the 1st time in a very long time.

True. As a photographer / cinematographer though the 13 inch is too small for working in the field. Actually I find the 15" a bit too small. Still wish they would make the 17 inch again.

Bought the 15' Base Model and upgraded to the 2.7 512GB SSD version for an insane 3299 € !

The single most expensive electronic device I have bought so far - and I could not be happier. Spent 1399€ on the Dell XPS 15 9550 and could not stand using it at all.

You can be upset about the smaller battery and lack ob USB ports, different Keyboard etc.

But this is by far the best machine I have ever used.
  • Best display on a notebook by far
  • Best trackpad and keyboard I have ever used.
  • Touch ID is awesome
  • Size and weight for this power are insane
  • Speakers are phenomenal, as is the silent cooling system.
I'm using this thing about 2 hours a day at home and 8-10 hours while on the road. I would have paid even more because it's something I get my work done with in a very enjoyable way. Worth it to me.

Just after the Christmas shopping period, B&H Photo is offering impressive deals on the new 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. B&H is offering $200 off with a free copy of Parallels 12, which is worth $79.95.

Drop the price by $750 and they might be onto something.

If the sales at the margin the bean counters demand is not there, they WILL kill the whole Mac line.

Yep. I'd even wager that there are a few people at Apple who are planning for this.

I was in an Apple store yesterday (getting my 6s battery swapped) and they were sold out of all the 15" MacBook with Touchbar except the higher end with 512k SSD. I can see why that would be the last to go since one is unlikely to need a mobile solution with that much storage, but if price is no issue you might as well get 1TB version.

For me, since I like to edit large video projects on my laptops, 1tb is a bare minimum. In my 2012 mbp I have 2tb of SSD storage.
Even for regular use, 512gb seems a bit cramped to me.

Wait til it breaks down on you from the excessive heat the thin design subjects the internal compoents to.
Then you're 'I cant beleive its this thin' laptop wont be very powerful at all lol

Were not in the 90's or even the early 2000's. Laptops are more than capable for large video projects without breaking down from excessive heat.

What matters to me is battery life, if only it weren't so random...

Youre probably right, it'll just throttle the processor down to the speed of the macbook once you push it hard

Oh, that's right. I forgot that a products value was derived by how much you want to pay for it and not how much the market values it

"LOL a Mont Blanc and a Bic pen both do the same thing so they should cost the same.LOLOL right guyz!"
[doublepost=1482812997][/doublepost]

This is about the dumbest response I've ever seen. Of COURSE a product's value is based on how much YOU are willing to pay for it. The MARKET has NOTHING to do with what a consumer is willing to pay. Jeeze!
[doublepost=1482862972][/doublepost]there used to be a time when I would wish I had dedicated Windows machine on Mac Quality hardware. Now I wish I had Windows hardware like the Dell XPS 15 that ran OSX. Not a good time to be a computer user. IOS is still better than Windows, but I don't like the direction the hardware is going in. I have a 2012 and 2014 MBP and will probably get a cheap Win10 machine to try and ween myself off of Apple over then next few years.

Did anyone mention that photo is the 13"?

B&H, must move a lot of merch. They have decent prices.

But do you often edit those projects "on the go"? Those USB-C ports are really fast. And external storage is cheap and also fast. I'm not sure how different workflow for even most power users would be using an external storage solution. I think a lot of folks are going to start using more external solutions on these devices to take care of the USB-C speed and get the benefit of redundancy and dependability.

Of course more is better, but saving money has some value as well.

A couple more hundred dollars off and it might actually be worth it.

You can't afford one?
[doublepost=1482865614][/doublepost]
Funny how these retailers give us a better deal than Apple themselves...

You are unaware that discounts usually come from 3rd party? For many products?
[doublepost=1482865647][/doublepost]
The new MacBook Pros must be selling fantastical for B&H to offer this deal.

B&H and other retailers have done this with every model. Pretty well known.

BTW - I recently purchased the base 15" from my local Apple Store (still within holiday return period). I just walked down there with my receipt and the B&H link and they refunded me $200 + tax. If anyone else here recently bought the new MBP, head down to Apple and save some bucks!

It ain't rainbows and unicorns on the other side either.

- This computers battery does last more than 3 hours when doing actual work.
- Magsafe has **** all to do with how "pro" a laptop is.
- External GPUs are a thing. Also, "pro" work that is GPU dependent should be done on a desktop. Unless you aren't a real pro and you can get by using a laptop with a dGPU. Are you a fake pro?
- Traditional USB and HDMI are worse than USB-C. Real pros know that.

Magsafe. Then you never have worked in a room full of pros with cables spread across the conference room table on a tight schedule. Most pros working with laptops have been saved multiple times by the magsafe connector. But I would be fine if the magsafe connector was only on the top end model with 17 inch display and 32 G RAM. Apple is right, there is no need for it on non-pro laptops. you know these little light things that are used to tweet, FaceTime, and check email.

- Pros should use a desktop. When your contract and the customer location is across the country or world, tugging a desktop along is not an option. Requiring a local desktop is not an option. Sometimes even getting an internet connection during the workday is problematic.
