If you are absolutely desperate for the BTS promo, there's an easy solution: register for a class, even a 1 or 2 hr one, at your local community college. I graduated from college 1 year ago tomorrow, but I am taking courses at my local community college so technically I'm still a university student. When all is said and done, I will be saving approximately $549 thanks to the BTS promo and regular student discount, and that does not include the free printer. If you're finicky like me, you get to enjoy discounts on upgraded hard drives, memory, antiglare screen, and applecare. Here's how it breaks down:

MBP 2.53 Ghz i5 $1849 ($150 off)
8 GB Memory $360 ($40 off)
500 GB Serial ATA @ 7200RPM $45 ($5 off)
Antiglare HD Widescreen Display $135 ($15 off)
Applecare $239 ($110 off)
Total Discounts: $320

Students also save $4 on iWork pre-installed on top of the $30 off deal.

And then you add in the free iPod, my choice is the Classic, and you save an additional $229 (based on last year's numbers) and you arrive at a grand total of $549 in savings. One course at my local community college is only costing me $150 so in the end I'm saving $299 on my computer by taking a CC course.:D

oh man!!!it`s unbelieveble!!!$549!!!!!!oh god!!

Paying $99 for the Developer Program also gives an incredible discount if you're buying a higher end MBP. i7 goes from $2,199 to $1,759. Now imagine the back to school special on top that of that ;)

I'm surprised no one has tried to do the math here.

If you buy from MacConnection now, you can get the base model MBP for $1049 after mail in rebate. No tax (in most states), no shipping.

If you wait to get the free iPod when they run that promotion again, you will pay the education price of $1099, plus tax. If we assume a middle-of-the-road 7% sales tax, that's about $1176 total.

The $1176 you'd pay to Apple minus the $1049 you'd pay to MacConnection now is about $127. iPod Touches retail for $199, but you can oftentimes find them for about $150 with Bing Cash Back.

Something to consider is that the back-to-school promotion runs when many states have tax-free weekend right before school starts. I was able to pick up an iMac + iPod touch with the EDU discount and without tax in NC.

BTS with the free iPods is usually before the iPod refresh right?
Would coincide perfectly with WWDC in a few days ;)
Release of new iPhone hardware could mean a release of the accompanying iPod touch as well.
BTS starting tomorrow doesn't seem like such an improbable idea after all.

iPods won't get refreshed until after the promotion is over, in mid-September.

Painful I have to wait for that. BTS should start soon but I will have to wait until August for the Tax free holiday. But that's a lot of cash considering you need to buy the iPod and printer at full price with tax then get a rebate. Waiting until August will save me another $150+. Just that I am impatient....

I don't think you can get the BTS with the Developer Store. In fact with the change to Mac Developer instead of ADC there is no more hardware discount.

I don't think the promotion will start tomorrow, seeing how tomorrow is a national holiday for Canada (the US and Canada usually start the promo at the same time). But maybe Tuesday or Wednesday...

Apple japan announces BTS

Apple japan announced its BTS on its website and is offering the same 8GB ipod touch as last year. the rebate is 19800 yen which equals $220. I guess apple us will follow the trend and announce its BTS on tuesday. Apple japan is starting its BTS on 25th.

I translated the page to english using google translate. I am so so excited to buy a MBP....yay

Thanks for posting that translated link, great news :)

Currently trying to decide between the Antiglare and Glossy 15'' MBP. I think the glossy will drive me nuts with all of the reflections, but to get the AG I'll have to pay tax on top of the additional screen cost, which is not too cool.

What do you mean there is no hardware discount? You can still pay for the $99/year thing and go to the adc which is significantly discounted. I wasn't sure if you could get the student discount even though there is a page for student developers, but the developer store does have great discounts.

Unfortunately, the ADC store is only available for people who had bought the membership prior to the change... it'll only even be up until 1 year after the change, so that people who bought before that are able to take advantage of the discounts offered as part of the 1-year ADC membership.

I am soo glad I read this! I always thought the BTS promotion started closer to the fall semester, not right after the spring semester. Looks like I can hold out a bit longer!

Also, does anyone know how long it lasts? Did I read sometime in August/September?

I remember buying my MBP last year in August and they said they're going to end the program in mid-September.

So what would happen if I went and paid for that $99 a year fee thing? I'd pay $99 bucks for useless stuff?

Does this offer usually run in the UK? If so what time of the year is it usually announced?
