IF we can use it towards the new Final Cut Pro that's coming out for $299.

Can we? Isn't it going to be downloadable and no longer on discs?

If we can't get Final Cut, I have no use for the card. I already have iWork and MS Office, and I don't have an iPod touch or iPad, and even if I did, I'd probably only want to play PacMan on it.

Yes, you can use it on anything that is on any of apples app stores (or itunes/ibooks stores) now or in the future (provided you don't use it all now of course ;) ).

I have NO use at all for the gift card as I dont own and dont plan on owning an iphone, ipod OR an ipad.

What good is this 'bonus' to me? Why don't they just slash $100 bucks off my next purchase...?

You, apparently, lack the intelligence required to understand that this gift card may be used in the Mac App Store to buy software for a Mac.

I had to buy Windows 7 for my graduating nephew and was really surprised at how much it costs for the stupid "Home Premium". My nephew better love that Mac Book Pro I giving him.

Windows academic is something like $27.

When was the last time you played an Xbox? The "blade" UI has not been around for a long time

I have an old xbox someone gave me. It doesn't get much use. But I will probably play some games on it when I get more time.

But I've seen pictures of the 360 UI and it looks like blades to me. The concept is the same as UI on other devices except that too much gets obscured and you can't see as much down a given menu. For someone who doesn't use it a lot, I find it more difficult to navigate.

Another thing I find absurd is how you can scroll all you want around that UI and not find what you are looking for if it is in the second menu pulled up by pushing the button on the remote.

Anyway, my opinion is that it is a horrible UI unless you are spending so many hours on it daily that you become intimately familiar with it.

No, you would not be able to use this to buy AppleCare. This gift card would be for the Mac App Store, the App Store, the iTunes Store, and iBookstore. None of those stores sell AppleCare; it's is sold by the Apple (Retail) Store.

What I am curious about is that the Terms and Conditions specifically say "Gift Card code". Seeing as how Apple is trying to go as paperless as possible, I wonder if this means that a code will be emailed, or if the $100 balance is going to be directly applied to the buyer's AppleID. Not to mention it would be easier to control than handing out gift cards in the event of retail returns.

I still think what Apple did with the iPhone 4 bumper refunds was very slick; if someone purchased one with a debit/credit card before they made them free, Apple automatically refunded you, no action needed on the buyer's part. I've always thought Apple's rebate processes were very streamlined, compared to others. I hope the implementation of this gift card code will be the same.

people are upset because the back to school promo isn't as good as it used to be in pure $. many bought the ipod touch to sell on fleabay for some scratch. i know i did. i got $180 for mine.

also

there was a rumor here that the back to school might even include some $ back for ipad 2. i think that rumor is making this announcement that more upsetting for people who were patiently waiting. i didn't wait to upgrade my 15 mbp, but was hoping to get a 13 air (sandy) and get rid of the vaio tt. maybe i'll hold onto my tt for a little while longer.

If I were to head out to the Apple Store today and purchase my Macbook Pro and this promotion does come out tomorrow, could I head back to the store this weekend just to get the promotion? For some reasons my parent's are being a bit stubborn and telling me that I either buy my macbook today or I don't get one at all. It's my High School Graduation gift.

Also if i am ble to do this would I have to lug the entire macbook back to the store so as to return it and than re-purchase it? (Parent's also don't want this though)

Those words mean so much to someone on hold with Dell customer support.

True. The xbox is better than nothing. PS3 and Wii are much better especially considering that horrible UI MS put on the xbox. Those "blades" LOL

LMAO

My statement is 100% valid.
You're such a fanboy, judging by your posts. The UI you mention is no longer used (its been gone for ages, and its style isn't actually that bad - Apple uses a very similar blade system in its online store checkout system).

wow that really is a blow for those expecting getting a free ipod, i for one have used this promotion for the past two years, bought my first and second macs with this promotion, along with my 2nd and 3rd ipod touch for the family. Anyway $100 is not enough, really apple thats cheap, i hope that this year's discounts are deeper if not, the gift card will just not cut it. Dont be surprised if this fall's sales are lower than last year

What about if I return my laptop after I receive my gift card?

Now that you're twenty-one (or about to be soon), you think that you can pull a fast one like this, and get away with it?

If you try this, Steve and I will be looking for you.

And the card will be deactivated.

The new UI is pretty clean and polished.. Not like the original "Blades" style.

Business as usual.

This is what happens when companies become very successful. They cut back on the incentives they previously employed to attract new customers. The corporation's mentality changes from "how do we grow the business" to "how does this impact my bottom line." Apple knows that the demand for their products is very high right now, and not likely to drop off anytime soon. Consequently, what need do they have to run special promotions?

Sure, you could buy that PC and get the free XBox, but what girl will want to go out with a guy who uses a PC when all the cool kids on campus have Macs? Similarly, any girl with a PC is probably too poor to afford a Mac. This is what Apple has going for them, the cool factor. It is amazing that they run any promotions at all. When was the last time Louis Vuitton had a sale, for example.

they probably feel if it is advertised towards the mac appstore then people will actually use it. if im not mistaken it would work for itunes as well, personally i would rather have an ipod but they probably they feel they will get more business to the appstore. whatever i dont need a new mac or ipod

...you've never had a girlfriend before, have you...

WOW!!! I am very disappointed I have upgraded our two Macbook pro's two years in a row and planned to do it again along with my iMac. I think Apple has under estimated the impact to their business!!!

College kids will REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, love this when the majority of them just pirate music and software :D

Where? I still get 8 licenses for free on every windows released trough msdnaa (I even got 11 licenses for windows 7 due to the languages loophole that was later patched).

Book stores, all you need is an acceptance letter and if you have an established school email on MS academic site.
I bought my son Windows 7 pro and office for less than $65

Has anyone seen any movement in prices @ online stores?

Assuming the retailer's margin is at 30%, there is a lot of margin for any online retailer to play with and pull the pissed off community
