I'm going to throw this gift card in Steve Jobs' face next time I see him. Hehe. :D "Thanks for nothin" *walks off*.

You're absolutely right. That's why I didn't believe Apple would be stupid enough to do this when I read the rumor yesterday. And it costs apple more than $70, because out of their 30%, they have to pay for bandwidth for all those downloads, administrating the whole thing (like managing accounts, billing, etc). Their 30% cut is not all profit.

So, they lost a $1600 sale on me, who knows how many thousands of other people just like me...and for a promo that won't save them any money?

What so you're going to buy a Windows computer now? You really think that the free ipod touch was the DEALBREAKER? Plenty of people buy macs when the promotion ISN'T going on. Try buying a refurbished mac and get the same price off that you would have with the ipod. Stop whining and complaining about a free ipod touch that you didn't get, Apple doesn't have to give you ANYTHING. Yet they offer you a $100 gift card to the mac applestore or the app store.

I wouldn't be surprised if you had the new macbook pro next month.

IF we can use it towards the new Final Cut Pro that's coming out for $299.

Can we? Isn't it going to be downloadable and no longer on discs?

If we can't get Final Cut, I have no use for the card. I already have iWork and MS Office, and I don't have an iPod touch or iPad, and even if I did, I'd probably only want to play PacMan on it.

Is there upgrade pricing for FCP? Any idea when the Studio suite is coming out? The $100 would be cool for that but I'd rather have some cash off of an iPad or a free iPod like years past. (and yes, when you do something several years in a row you set the bar...)

There is something people on this forum have wrong.

Apple is not making an additional 30% by giving away gift certificates!
Apple is giving away "free money in the app store/iTunes" so they cannot make an additional 30% when they are paying for it in the first place. They just don't have to pay developers 30%, so Apple is paying 70% of the App.

I'm glad they finally announced it.

Been holding off on a new laptop since early May looking forward to seeing this promo. Tomorrow I'm going to order a shiny new Dell and free Xbox.

Since I'm replacing a powerbook, I guess this means I'm switching back from Apple. There's some great marketing.

I'll believe it only when I see it. Scroll back through these pages and see how many photos show BTS deals that are going to happen "tomorrow".

Ask yourself this

Why would any company that has people lining up by the hundreds (and thousands) outside to buy a new product give these promotions? Apple knows that most are still going to buy the mac anyway, why give away anything.

Companies do this to promote their name. Once their name is out then they jack the price.

That's it! I'm buying the refurbished 17" I've been eyeing for some time now. Savings of about $175, which is very comparable to selling an iPod touch for $200. At least I can say that I'm getting Lion for free for waiting so long...

I was planning on getting my first Macbook Pro next week (or whenever Final Cut Pro X hits), never bought a Mac before so not sure how this all works. Wouldn't mind the giftcard going towards Final Cut. But I'm not a student! Does this apply to all Mac purchases during the promotion or just those buying via education pricing/store?

I am with you and this makes two
I look at a computer to do computing and not as part of "status and show off " portfolio

An enterprise quality laptop is roughly @ same price as MBP but provides a way more computing that MBP

*cough* No ID is required to purchase online through the Apple educational store.

Only education store.

Do you work for a large company or the government? You might qualify for a corporate/gov't discount which is slightly greater than the edu discount.

Don't forget that you also get $100 or more off of the computer for an educational discount. Plus this app store gift.

If you're not interested in the gift card then you can now wait for the product refresh and get a newer computer. You're being saved from purchasing at the end of the product cycle.

I think the people most upset about this are the type that don't pay for any software of media anyway. They can't imagine what they would need this gift card for when they steal everything anyway.

Good point.

You really think that the free ipod touch was the DEALBREAKER?

Yes it was. And that's true for a lot of people who are regular mac users and not fanbois with blinders on. The mac is just a computer, not some magical portal to heaven like you seem to think it is.

Apple doesn't have to give you ANYTHING. Yet they offer you a $100 gift card to the mac applestore or the app store.

Apple doesn't have to do anything; they don't have to sell any computers for under $10,000, they don't have to update their OS. They are a for profit business. They're not doing this because they love their adoring fans, they're doing it because they want a bigger profit and they think this will get it for them.

Steve Jobs doesn't love you, he loves your money.

I wouldn't be surprised if you had the new macbook pro next month.

I can promise that won't happen. I was kind of hoping this deal would include an iPad, but I caved on the weekend, got a brand new iPad 1 64 gig on clearance for 400 bucks :). Now that this promo is a total dud, I'm glad I did. I haven't even opened the iPad because I wanted to see what the B2S deal was, now I can play with that tonight. So, an iPad, an xbox, and a windows laptop, all for less than the cheapest 13" MBP, is still a pretty good start to school.

Oh, and the $50 app store cards are always $40 at the electronics stores here, I just picked one up on the weekend. So it's really just $80 Jobs is giving the 200 people who actually like this deal.

Since we get a free update of Lion if we buy a computer between now and Lion's launch...

:(

If Apple were to give an even bigger educational discount than they normally do DURING this promotion okay, the $100 iTunes gift card would be fine. Since Adobe CS and Microsoft Office are not offered in the Mac App store, is this useful to students and/or teachers?

Speaking of Adobe, I wonder if the cheaper bundle of CS is still available online when you buy a Mac now? That was nice to pay $360 for the full suite. It would be even nicer if this option is still available. The $100 iTunes gift card wouldn't help this situation but...

I hope this is revised next year. Not that I expect an X-Box, but at least you could sell the iPod if you wanted to and recoup some of your outlay.

Skimpy. Be cool if it was a $200 gift card, I understand the idea, they are going to push that app store hard. Or maybe an ipad 16GB for half price or something as another option.

Sorry guys that are buying now. :(

A free ipad? LOL

Sell the gift card to someone for $70. They get a deal and you get some money back. That and the educational discount on the computer saves you some money.

Well people can pretend they are switching back to Windows if they like. I think this year will see a continuation of the trend with Apple sales increasing.

A discounted iPad would never have happened. They can't make them fast enough now to keep in stock at full price.

I was going to buy a mac the day this promo launched... now I'm not... If you could use the 100$ on hardware, I would...

$200 off an iPad.

I can get it for $80 here at the electronics store any time, and $78 at costco about once a year. Nobody would pay $70 for it. All the more reason it's a pathetic joke.

You know why these $50 gift cards are sold for $40 at stores? Because the SELLER, takes a $10 hit so you can buy more products from them. Apple does NOT lose $10 off this sale.
