Just because they offered it before doesn't mean they owe it to you now...
My job has employee appreciation days. Every year, they make it worse.

Offers change (usually for the worse unless the company is needs to drum up more business). Prices get more expensive. Sorry, but that's how it is.

You know the, "back in my day gum was only .25 cents?" Yep, you're going to find as you grow older you're going to reminisce about how things were cheaper and deals were better (apparently kids got real toys in the cracker jack boxes, like metal toys. We at least got plastic toys when I was a kid. Now I notice they only hand out pieces of paper with cheap puzzles or stickers).

so by your theory, in 50 years, when u get a happy meal, the cashier will just tell u a joke? your a moron

How does gum relate to customer expectations? That analogy is flawed. Apple made it a tradition to attract students every year with a promo, they need it for better sales, which means pleasing the customer. The Ipod is not more expensive than the gift card. As I said, this is a business decision just to promote the mac appstore. It's okay for consumers to not like it. Many students hold out just for this promo, they do have a right to be disappointed.

So, an iPad, an xbox, and a windows laptop, all for less than the cheapest 13" MBP, is still a pretty good start to school.
Xbox and iPad have nothing to do with school. Don't be so naive to believe that they will somehow enrich your school experience. They will not.

As a computer science major I'd rather have a Mac that can run OS X, Windows, and Linux so that I can get experience using all three major operating systems. Surprisingly it actually does add something to my education. I'm gaining a skill that a lot of people won't have. My 13" MBP will get me much further than an iPad and Xbox will get me.

Also I don't hate Windows by any means. Windows 7 isn't a bad OS. I'm sure your Windows laptop will get you through all four years of school. However it still can't run OS X. That was the deciding factor in my decision.

What you meant to type was,

"So, by your theory, in 50 years when you get a happy meal the cashier will just tell you a joke? You're a moron."

Note the placement of commas, the correct spelling of you, and the appropriate use of an apostrophe in you're. Oh yeah, and a period after your last sentence.

If you are going to call some one a moron, you should at least make sure you don't look like one with your horrid grammar.

And yes, the point is that companies will get cheaper with promotions. It happens. Some more than others.

Gum and cracker jack toys (I threw that in cause that is a promotion cracker jack does to get people to buy their product). My point is that prices get higher and companies do change promotions for the worse (unless they find they need to get more customers).

And obviously Apple's bean counters did the math and decided the amount of money they'd save by offering new deal (between offering less and also a gift card where people are given incentive to try their app stores) would make up for the amount of sales they'll lose by disgruntled customers. Hate to say it, but I doubt apple cares about the people stamping their feet here, they've probably already taken account for the fact they will lose some sales. You don't honestly think they didn't think they weren't going to at least lose some people by reducing the promotion?

No iPod this year sucks. It's a disappointment for a lot of people, including me.

That said... newsflash: Apple doesn't need incentive-ridden promos to push its products. They don't need to compete with Microsoft's free Xbox, if they believe they can survive without matching that offer. They obviously don't give two ***** about it.

Maybe it'll change next year, who knows. But from a business standpoint, it certainly doesn't make sense to do the same promotion year after year if there are no clear gains.

Wow, some one who gets it!

may be there is some adjustment to the education price then it does not matter if there is a back to school promotion or not...

I don't think you understood my point from the start. Apple knows they will lose some sales but promoting the mac appstore this year will net them more money in the long run than selling hardware. It's strictly a business related strategy. My point is simple that as customers we can be disgruntled over it and currently are. So I don't see why some have to defend Apple over it. We know Apple doesn't care and money is their priority. Are you even a student or planning to buy a mac during the promotion? If you answer NO, then this doesn't affect you. As a student, I would prefer an ipod, hence the disappointment.

I also "look at a computer to do computing." That's why I don't buy a windows machine that's gonna cost me at least ten hours a year (dealing with viruses, anit-viruses, drivers, networking issues, etc.) in lost billable hours. That's $1500 dollars. That more than offsets a cheaper price tag and a free XBOX.

And for the "students" who are saying that they're now going to buy a PC, remember that you could have bought a new Mac and used it for the next four to five years. If you buy a PC, you're gonna have to replace it at least once in that time frame. Also, the Mac would still be worth 30-40% of it's initial cost when you decided to upgraded. You're not saving any money.

Um... That may be true for the "cheap" $499 PC's but every computer I spend my $ on is at least $1,000 and they have lasted me 4-5 years easily

Sounds like a lot of people here are jealous of student discounts. Some pretty stupid comebacks.

There have been rumors on top of rumors about the BTS offer over the last 2 months. And when it was finally announced as a 100 gift card, it really deflated a lot of people. Geez, just let us vent. It really sucks compared to last years offer.

Apparently Apple doesn't think it needs the old promo to compete with MS. Given the numbers they threw around recently, that would make a lot of sense. I got that feeling after the keynote speech.

I would be happy with the gift card if there was some descent games I could get with it, or software I needed that they sold. It's pretty sad when the Wii has a better line up than a 2011 imac. After all an entertained student is a good student. :)

And I doubt the gift card will be physical. It will most likely be tied to your itunes account.

I understand people are disappointed. I have no issue with that, it is kinda disappointing (even if you weren't going to get a Mac this year cause chances are that offer is gone by the way of the dodo). And yeah, you are right, it's easier for me to swallow cause I bought my Mac last year. But I do eventually plan on getting another someday (if I had the money I'd buy one every year, I like having new technology but I'm poor and until I get a better job, I should probably be happy with what I have now).

What I just find annoying are the people who are now going over to PC solely over this. I just don't buy that they aren't doing this more out of pouting than a PC is just as good to them (if it were the latter, why did they want to spend so much more on the Mac in the first place? The 200 dollar ipod, especially when you can get an xbox which is about equivalent and personally I'd rather have the xbox, doesn't make up for the large difference in price. I sure as hell wouldn't be paying 500 dollars more for a computer if I didn't have a strong preference for it). I just think they are being illogical and cutting off their nose to spite their face so to speak (going with a computer they obviously see as inferior if they thought the apple was worth the price in the first place just to prove a point on something that, well, it happens. They're taking it way too personally).

Don't be an a$$. Correct grammar on a moronic idea does not make the idea any less moronic.

I just bought my first Macbook Pro today. It's fine though, I asked the guy if the promotion happened to start soon if I could take part and he said yes with no returns, just talk to me and I'll get you it. Looks like I'll be calling tomorrow for the code or go and get the giftcard.

I've been accepted into college and everything but I don't have a physical student id. I have my student id number. Will I still be able to get everything with just the student id number?

We all know the extreme talk is just anger, people will still buy apple products because they like them. I agree with you on the over-reaction though.

1. My idea wasn't moronic, it's reality (all I said was that prices get expensive and companies tend to get worse on their offers). If you don't think that's the reality of it, well, when you grow up, you'll find out. Sorry, inflation has been happening way before any of us were born (even the oldest member here). And companies, especially in recessions, cut back on incentives (and sometimes they add to them, but sometimes that means they are using desperate tactics cause they have no other way to get sales, sometimes them offering something really good is a bad sign for that company/store). That's life.

2. If you are going to call some one a moron, you're just going to make them laugh if you end up looking like a moron yourself when you can't even figure out simple grammar rules such as your = possessive and you're = you are when you call them a moron. Oh, and shake their heads at how stupid the youth of today can be *sigh*.

I doubt there are a lot of serious people that will buy a PC b/c they don't like the promo. Ultimately, the Mac and PC are work tools.

A construction worker isn't going to buy a $20 drill for work because it comes with a free football. Similarly he isn't not going to buy a $300 pro model because it only comes with a $10 carrying case. End of the day people will buy the right tool for them regardless of any promo. Anyone that does otherwise is a gullible fool, buying the promotion, not the tool. All a promo really does is get people to upgrade earlier than they might otherwise.

Whoot! Logic (the whole post but I particularly like the bolded part).

I'm totally with you on that.

Asterik

What do you think the * Asterik denotes...

Will we have the option of getting a $100 of ANYTHING or does it just mean it can be used on iTunes and iBooks as well?
