Here's why this makes sense.....

You guys need to stop whining. $100 dollars is enough to spare me from having to purchase iwork and save money on other mac apps.

And that's not all. I plan on getting the discounted 13'' MBP for $1099, and then save another $100 on an all in one printer. Apple is already being nice, so stop whining.

They used to give ipods because new ones were about to come out. Obviously Apple said they are focusing on software this time around, that is why there is no ipod and instead the app store card.

You guys heard them say it at the WWDC that Mac sales have surpassed PCs a lot this year. They don't need to do any kind of incentive to have more macs bought.

I have NO use at all for the gift card as I dont own and dont plan on owning an iphone, ipod OR an ipad.

What good is this 'bonus' to me? Why don't they just slash $100 bucks off my next purchase...?

You can buy apps for your Mac such as Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. You ARE a student right? You might need those apps. It's better than having it preinstalled for $70 when you buy it when customizing your mac.

Yes it was. And that's true for a lot of people who are regular mac users and not fanbois with blinders on. The mac is just a computer, not some magical portal to heaven like you seem to think it is.

Apple doesn't have to do anything; they don't have to sell any computers for under $10,000, they don't have to update their OS. They are a for profit business. They're not doing this because they love their adoring fans, they're doing it because they want a bigger profit and they think this will get it for them.

Steve Jobs doesn't love you, he loves your money.

I can promise that won't happen. I was kind of hoping this deal would include an iPad, but I caved on the weekend, got a brand new iPad 1 64 gig on clearance for 400 bucks :). Now that this promo is a total dud, I'm glad I did. I haven't even opened the iPad because I wanted to see what the B2S deal was, now I can play with that tonight. So, an iPad, an xbox, and a windows laptop, all for less than the cheapest 13" MBP, is still a pretty good start to school.

Oh, and the $50 app store cards are always $40 at the electronics stores here, I just picked one up on the weekend. So it's really just $80 Jobs is giving the 200 people who actually like this deal.

Blah blah blah ....

Anyway ..... Poor decision for Apple. They have been giving free iPod's for years so everyone is expecting one. Good deal for software developers.

Boo hoo, let us know when you buy your mac next month.

it would be almost impossible for me to spend an extra 100$ in the App store... why can't it just be an Apple gift card? Boo Hoo?

Only education store.

Do you work for a large company or the government? You might qualify for a corporate/gov't discount which is slightly greater than the edu discount.

Eh, I do work for a large market TV station, but only part time so not sure I'd qualify for a corporate discount. And I'm purchasing it for the freelance work I frequently do (thereby deducting it on taxes). Not sure how that would fly if I bought it using a corporate discount for another job :p

This is my first big ticket purchase at Apple, and to be used for work after establishing myself as self employed, so I really have no idea how any of this works.

Must Apple be so stingy? There are plenty of people who had put off their purchases so they can get a free iPod, but now they can't. And why does it have to be an iTunes/App Store card? I'd be a lot happier with an Apple Store gift card...

I am with you and this makes two
I look at a computer to do computing and not as part of "status and show off " portfolio

An enterprise quality laptop is roughly @ same price as MBP but provides a way more computing that MBP
I also "look at a computer to do computing." That's why I don't buy a windows machine that's gonna cost me at least ten hours a year (dealing with viruses, anit-viruses, drivers, networking issues, etc.) in lost billable hours. That's $1500 dollars. That more than offsets a cheaper price tag and a free XBOX.

And for the "students" who are saying that they're now going to buy a PC, remember that you could have bought a new Mac and used it for the next four to five years. If you buy a PC, you're gonna have to replace it at least once in that time frame. Also, the Mac would still be worth 30-40% of it's initial cost when you decided to upgraded. You're not saving any money.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

8GB iPod touch to a $100 AppStore gift card??? That's cheap... at least Microsoft is giving out Xboxes.

I honestly would have to agree. Hell, Microsoft is giving away a $200 xbox with as little as a $600 windows PC.

Apple is giving a low value to consumers if this is the only option...

what a funny gamut of responses. the ipod deal is what it is, a carrot to tempt people into something they might not have gone for otherwise.

when the ipad discount rumour was floating around, i starting thinking "hey, for $200 off, maybe i will go for it." but at the end of the day, i don't really have THAT much of a need/want for an ipad. if i did, i'd have saved up the cash and bough one already. and yet there i was considering $300 for one, simply because of a discount that was just large enough to make it tempting.

and its the same deal with the mbp. i'm obviously doing ok with my current model, because i didn't run out and buy the 2011's straight up when they were released. but the prospect of getting that appealing "extra" with the b2s promo had me willing to take the plunge.

there's some self righteous people who seem to have come on here to post their disgust with other peoples' apparent greed. but at best, the whole promotion revolves around greed, so you can't really condemn people without condemning apple for running the promo (in whatever form) in the first place.

anyway, everyone here who has expressed disappointment is gonna find their own way come tomorrow. some will go for a pc and an xbox - and if that appeals to them, who is anyone else to judge? the people who really wanted their new mac will go ahead and still be enjoying the albeit smaller reward afforded by the gift card. and some (like i'm currently leaning) will say "hey, if i was willing to wait out 3 months for a carrot, maybe my need isn't that great" and we'll just keep waiting till a temptation or requirement comes along that justifies a purchase.

I'd rather have a free $100 gift card than pay for a $250 (after tax) iPod Touch I can't use, wait months for a $200 rebate, and then try and sell it for $150. The free $100 gift card is something I would actually use.

Now I just need a updated 13"MBA and I can get this deal with a printer rebate.

Most people would spend this $100 between apps, music, movies, tv shows, and all (and would have done so anyway saving $100.) People crying on here probably steal all that stuff so don't see the point.

been waiting for the back to school promo and it was a surprise they lowered it to a 100 dollars mac app store card.

$200 off an iPad. That should have been clear, dumbass (you prefer a more pedestrian insult? Maybe it's easier for you to understand them?)

I can get it for $80 here at the electronics store any time, and $78 at costco about once a year. Nobody would pay $70 for it. All the more reason it's a pathetic joke.

No you're still sophomoric insults.

In the end you'll take the gift card and like it. Now run along.

I like how you and you're fellow "concern trolls" coordinate your posts though. The frequency is good and I like the added touch of rating each other's posts up and others down.

Ok, so why were they willing to pay hundreds more for it than the PC? If it's just a computer, why not save the money in the first place and buy the PC, cause ipod or gift certificate, the mac is still significantly more?

I'm sorry, but most of this is people stamping their feet pouting cause they are pissed cause apple decided not to offer as good an extra. I'm not saying those who decided they are just going to buy elsewhere (Amazon, other places) that you could easily pay about the same with a rebate than you would with getting the student discount and the ipod are that way, they're being smart and logical. Going with the best deal.

But when you were willing to pay hundreds more for the mac over the pc, don't tell me you thought the pc was the same thing. You obviously saw that much value in the mac. Saying you are going PC now over a small difference in change speaks more of, "I'm doing this to spite Apple" rather than "The apple was not worth it". THe apple would not have been worth it with the ipod if that were the truth (we're talking a decently bigger difference than the 100 dollars apple demoted the promotion by).

You know, when I was in college I decided to go for the PC cause macs were overpriced. That lasted all of a year before I found a good deal on a mac that was being sold to get out of inventory (last year's model) and was much happier with the mac. So, no, I don't personally think it's the same. I much prefer a mac. If I'm on a tight budget and I have to have a computer, sure, I'll get the PC. But if I have the money, the mac is worth it in my experience. Else I wouldn't pay that much over what I could get a PC for.

A teacher I know just bought his imac a week ago (it is due to arrive tomorrow), is he still eligible for this discount and how does he get it?

I think is some states you have a window of opportunity to demand sales and promotions offered after your purchase by law. I think there was a new release last year for an Apple product that Apple did a good job with. It might have been the ipad2 and recent ipad1 purchases.

I like how some people are justifying apple's decision by stating that they don't owe us anything.

When a business launches an yearly promotion to boost sales, people get accustomed to free products. Why did Apple give the $100 gift card? Because they have to give something, this decision of course was to promote the mac app store. We don't care for it of course. Majority prefer the Ipod. Next year it will be back to the ipod because Steve will be getting lots of emails complaining about this decision and also by then the mac appstore won't need promotions.

Just because they offered it before doesn't mean they owe it to you now...
My job has employee appreciation days. Every year, they make it worse.

Offers change (usually for the worse unless the company is needs to drum up more business). Prices get more expensive. Sorry, but that's how it is.

You know the, "back in my day gum was only .25 cents?" Yep, you're going to find as you grow older you're going to reminisce about how things were cheaper and deals were better (apparently kids got real toys in the cracker jack boxes, like metal toys. We at least got plastic toys when I was a kid. Now I notice they only hand out pieces of paper with cheap puzzles or stickers).

this is such a bad deal. I never pay a dime for software, music, or movies. so a gift card is worthless. What happened to the days of happily stealing software from thepiratebay and using serialbox? Now apple is cultivate a whole new crop of law-abiding app purchasers. At least all the stuff I download from filestube doesn't have viruses because I use a mac:D
