How disappointing.....

Expensive Mac + ipod + student discount was reasonable but now it is now downright torrid.

The Windows 7 computer + Xbox is definitively the better deal now.

Mac + nothing beats Windows 7 + xbox.

Well this totally sucks...

I've been waiting to buy a new iMac since they were released in May waiting for this promo. However, if I would have know it was being changed this year to a gift card I would have bought it right when it was released.

The gift card is lame, especially since I have yet to get anything from the app store. I still like getting apps from the developer because I feel like I have more control over the installation, and it also isn't tied to my appleID (in case I load a program on a home or work computer, for example).

In the end the gift card will go towards iPhone apps and iPad apps (when I finally get one). If the card could be used towards anything in the Apple Store then I'd be fine by that, but for iTunes/apps it just isn't that great of an incentive.

Very disappointing, especially considering the xBox promo Microsoft is doing.

And sure, Apple doesn't have to do this, but doing it for the last 5 years sure sets an expectation (I think it has even been longer than that). Still very disappointing...

Disappointing! I was hoping they would still offer a free iPod Touch. After all, Apple has reported financial earnings and not losses!

And there's a good reason why they made those profits - it involves having a strategy that considers the financial implications of the promotions it runs.

I think that because the next iPhone will be released later, this means that the next iPod touch will be released either late this year or early next year meaning that the clear out for B2S needs not to happen.

This guess-timation comes from the release date difference between the iPhone 4 and the iPod 4.

Just my opinion :)

Yes, thats exactly what I was saying.

Apple should at least give some options like $100 iTunes card OR $100 credit towards anything at Apple.
This blows big time.
Now I will put off purchasing new systems much later rather than update every year.

Man! but disappointing but oh well, at least its better than not getting anything at all

1.) Has anyone considered how little the change in cost to Apple is? Normally they use this promo to get rid of old iPods only worth about $150. In addition, probably $80 out of that price is profit, meaning you can subtract that amount from the value for what it costs them. That leaves you with $70, the same amount they lose from the gift card.

2.) As this promo is normally used to clear out old iPods before the September refresh, could this mean that we will see a late iPod refresh this year?

I cant imagine apple not going into the Christmas present Market with a new iPod line up, but we'll soon find out!

Just stopped in to see the whiners, complainers and those with that wonderful American "I'm entitled to a free iPod" spirit that made this county what it is today.

I can see they are out in full force. :p

What about if I return my laptop after I receive my gift card?

They'll do what every other retailer does. Refund the purchase price of the computer minus $100 for the gift card if you've scratched off the promo code.

So if you payed $1199 and got a giftcard they'd refund you $1099 if you don't return the card unused.

do we still get a free printer?

lets see if the printer is free

i can sell the itunes gift card for $90
sell the printer for $60

make $150

if we got the free ipod i would've sold it for $175

so the difference to me is $25

Well based on this time they could release it early December.

Windows > Mac
Based on marketshare and usage.

Xbox > nothing
A console is better than nothing.

Your statement is invalid.

Yeah let's base how good a product is on market share. Ford has a bigger market share than Bentley. They must make better cars.

I can't beleive no one has mentioned this part yet:

Apple gets $30 of that $100.

Edit: Whoops, guess several people beat me to it.

And Apple doesn't get any money from a $200 iPod ;)

What Apple is doing here is adding more money to the $2.5bn paid out to app developers so far. There has been all this moaning about Apple's 30 percent cut for software on the iOS and MacOS App Store, but now Apple actually puts money into people's hands to give it to app developers! So if you compare iOS and Android development: On Android, you have to work hard to convince people to pay for your software (I nice statement that I heard once was "we are trying to increase the percentage of customers among our users"), but if you develop for iOS and for MacOS X, Apple actually gives people money to spend on your apps!

is there games like cod 4 on the mac app store?

This is a "back to school" promotion. I'm quite happy with Apple helping people going to school financially; I'm not happy with Apple helping students to waste their time on computer games.

Unlikely it wouldn't be enough time for consumes since christmas is around the corner and this will be past Black Friday- biggest retail day of year.

As always 90% chance that new ipods will be revealed in september.

Yeah, because markethare and usage is such a great measure of the quality of a product...

A lot of people drive fords, does that mean they're better than audis? ;)

Really surprised at all the negative responses. But then I need a new Mac whether or not a frisbee is included. I could use the gift card for sure.. that's $100 off Aperture or FCP in my eyes. Thanks Apple!:D
