Just got back from the apple store with my replacement ipad 2 for the light bleed issue. A Pic taken at 100% brightness in a closet is below.

yes, that looks close to the ipad1 screen... alot better. they all bleed but it's uniform rather than concentrated in certain areas.

this thread would be half the size if they could more screens were like that.

Received my 2nd replacement today. IMO the bleeding is the worst out of the three. I felt I shouldn't have returned the 2nd iPad which had the least bleed.

I called apple, and after an hour on the phone they decided to give me a "ecoupon" for the online store -- which I'm not particularly interested to spend on anything. It was something like spend $150 to get $45 off and excludes iPhone/iPad and gift cards.

This rep told me that apple has acknowledged this issue (which of course reading around online I knew about this) and that they'll be making an "announcement" in the next few days or weeks (which I'm really sceptical of because it will be a repeat of the iPhone antennagate) regarding this issue and to offer a solution. He said that I can return the iPad at a later stage after the so-called address, which I doubt they'll actually accept a return at all by that stage.

I guess I'll be keeping this iPad for now and then in return it a month later regardless of whether if such an announcement will take place. Hopefully by then they would've have started production with the Samsung panels or LG would have fixed their problems.

I finally got my replacement after waiting three weeks. The backlight bleeding is worse than my old one. I sent it back to Apple and they told me that they could see nothing wrong with it. They're now sending it back to me. I know for a fact that there's something wrong with it. What should I do?

Go to the Apple store. I had the same thing happen to me. Sent it off to Apple and on the repair status it said "Could not duplicate issue, Original product shipped" Took it into the Apple store and the Genius told me he has no idea how they didn't see it as it was obviously there in normal light and then he replaced it in store for me.

Lol so after having time to spend checking out my fifth iPad 2, I see that there are two dead pixels. that was my trade off for lint bleed I suppose.

I am so angry with apple but I don't feel like going through the stress of swapping and risking more backlite bleed.

This is the last time I buy an apple product.

My iPad2 came in last night, and it had a decent amount of light bleeding. So I set up a Genius appointment for 1/2 later to show them.

Got to the local Apple Store early and the Genius was able to take me right away. I explained that I noticed the light bleed (at 50% brightness) pretty clearly. He said that they know about the issue and wanted to take it in a dark room in the back and verify it. 2-3 minutes later, he came back out and agreed that the light bleeding was quite obvious. He offered to swap it out for me, but stated that it is a store policy that they only allow a one time swap. He quickly followed that up by saying that because I had literally just opened the iPad 1/2 an hour ago, he would not qualify it as the one time swap. I thanked him and he said he would open a new one and verify that there was no light bleeding in the replacement.

2 min later, he comes out from the back room(s) with a brown box replacement. He said he tested it and it had zero light bleeding at full brightness. I thanked him again, went home and tested it. Zero bleeding on this brown box replacement.

so now, they changed the policy to only 1 time replace?

That's what the Genius guy said to me. I don't know if this is a specific store policy, a company wide policy, a policy just for the backlight bleeding, or just a story he was spinning in an effort to prevent me from coming back in for an additional replacement.

I just thought I'd share my experience with you all... Since no official statement has been made by Apple, I assume that others may get different responses in this situation.

thanks for ur sharing! i just concern because i already replaced it 1 time and i will try again in one or 2 months, cause the problem still exists!

My unit also suffers from backlight bleeding at multiple areas. What I gather from this thread is that the best solution would be to wait a few months when supplies of the iPad 2, as well as brown box replacement units, become more available in apple stores. That way, you could go in and exchange on the spot and make sure that your new unit is not suffering from the same issue. There seems to be too much uncertainty with going through the shipping back to apple process (ie people reporting that their replacement units are even worse). What do you guys think?

+1

I was watching Deadwood last night on the new HBO GO app in a somewhat dark bedroom and have a huge orange blotch in the upper-right corner, as well as flashlighting around the left and bottom edges - this was probably at about 60% brightness with auto-dimming on. I've lived with it but will be waiting another month or two to hear that this is all sorted out before I even bother with trying to exchange it. I bought it at Best Buy on release day. It still works for what I want to do with it but long-term I'll feel better having a unit that does not exhibit these problems.

Ok guys today was my second replacement appointment and guess what the second brown box unit also had bleed issues . They store guys said they will change again for me . I just don't understand why apple dosent check it perfectly and send it . This is getting quite frustrating now . Or else they can just openly tell us that by this particular time new batches will come and only then you can come and replace your iPad . Let's see what the 3rd brown box replacement looks like . Anyway guys who already got the perfect screen congrats.

this wasnt at all visible when i first bought mine a few weeks ago.

Finally got one at the Apple Store last night - they just got a big shipment in of all of them and didn't have to wait in any lines.... ;)

Mine has about the same amount of bleed - not as disturbing as I thought though. Can only see it if you are watching movies which I really don't do on these small devices....

Still - they need to do something about their QC. Maybe will change it out right before the warranty expires.

Are there any manufacturing dates we can find on the iPads?

I sold my white iPad which did have minor light bleeds and my new black iPad is scheduled to arrive next week

Updating my situation:

I'm on my 3rd iPad (second replacement) and not only does it suffer from backlight bleeding, it has glass separation to the point of making a clicking noise if I touch the glass to the immediate right of the home button.

I'm talking to apple right now because driving to the apple store just isn't a solution for me. I've already spent 60$ on gas going back and forth and the tech guy on the phone is VERY understanding. He's explained that he is going to see if he can't set me up an express delivery of a new iPad 2 overnight even though I do not have apple care because of my situation. I explained I've bought tons of products from apple and I'm not trying to be a complainer but I just want a satisfactory device. He agreed and never one questioned me.

It does help that i can reproduce the clicking noise but yeah, no hassle so far it's been very very smooth. Will update with what they decide to do he's talking with a senior advisor.

Just a heads up....my local apple store is no longer exchanging units for light leak issues. Doesn't matter how many times. I brought in the worst light leaked unit of all time and they would not swap.

Apple guys on the floor could not believe it and helped me "return" my model for another one. They were shocked that these units were considered in spec.

The response to customers now I've been told is to tell them to wait a few months then return. This is now policy.

I forgot to mention that when I went in the genius offered me a full refund or exchange. They made no mention of a limit on exchanges, but this is the first time I have had Apple offer me a refund for a defective device in four years of using their products. Two bad I have hundreds of dollars invested in apps. I think this light leak issue is bigger than anyone realizes for Apple and it is going to end up hurting the bottom line on iPad revenue for sure. I am surprised that the tech sites and stock analysts are not making a bigger deal of this issue.

Ok, so UPDATE time.

Just got off the phone, took 1 hour and 10 minutes (!!!).

Turns out they COULD have done the overnight replacement but they would have needed to put a hold on my card for nearly 800$, which I don't want. I'm not interested in putting a hold on my credit card for that amount, mainly because my main card (i only use one) doesn't have that balance free (well, it does, but then I won't be able to really use it until the hold clears ect.), so I turned that down.

He then said my options were 1. send it in and wait or he offered to call the apple store nearest to me and ask them to hold a unit and call me when it comes in. So currently that's my situation.

I basically said I know it isn't your fault but this is very frustrating because now i'm out like 100$ in gas. He mentioned apple could 'help' me, so I obliged. Now he's sending me an accessory of my choice.

so will the iPads shipping now have the light bleed issue dealt with one of these special "brown box" model iPads?

my iPad is supposed to ship in 3 days.

iPad that just arrived in store this morning had the worst light bleed I've ever seen. It also had a "warmer" type screen (not bad)....so I'm not entirely convinced this is a LG screen only problem.

Edit: Here's a photo before the return. This was in a bright, sunlit room...not some dark closet. Made my original returned unit look like a perfect specimen.

This is really horrible , I just don't understand how come apples quality control just let this unit go out in public this is just crazy:eek:

So. What a day I had yesterday in London, I finally decided it was time to take a chance and then set out to replace my iPad 2 because I was tired of watching movies with splotchy blacks, really looks like a ghetto rubbish tablet especially when you want others to watch with you. Also didn’t like how with that screen, 50%-> 100% brightness seemed to be the same, only slightly brighter at 100% very slightly.

So I went to Regent Street yesterday morning at 10:30, with my iPad2 with pretty bad light leakage on the sides. The tech took a look and brought it in the back and came back saying yes it was bad and he would replace it. BTW it seemed he had heard of this issue because he asked me to put it on a movie for him so he can see it that way and then he confirmed the issue. However regent street had none in stock and he offered to order one for me for next week or check out Covent Garden. So I told him to order one for next week and checked out covent garden anyway as well to see what I trouble I could dig up over there. Trouble I found.

1. Went out there and got a first replacement straight away. Got back to the office with my replacement and found no light bleed, but a stuck blue pixel smack dab in the middle of the screen  No way is that going to fly.

2. Took it right back to covent garden in the afternoon a few hours later, saying look i'm back.. this one has a stuck pixel.. Starting to look like an OCD freak who cannot be satisfied. They start giving me the OK.. we will change it again, but this is within tolerance.. so if we cannot match YOUR standards then we can process a refund after we try with this replacement. I said fine. Took the *second* replacement (third iPad), screen looked good. Got on the tube to go home and then checked out the back. It had 3 huge scratch marks from screwdrivers or something on the back, like deep ones showing black. Also, the screen had some splotchy bleeding. I was like, what the hell is this. So angry as I was even keeping it in its plastic until I got home and put a screen protector on and place it in my case. No way was I going to accept a scratched up device.

3. Went back again to covent garden and to be fair they were pretty nice about it. I said look.. I gave you back a mint condition device and this one has scratches on the back look. They said ok… yeah that’s not great, but there are manufacturing variances etc. If we can’t satisfy you with this one then we cannot meet your needs and we should process a refund. I stood my ground and said look. This isn’t about me being difficult. Do you see that this is scratched up? Isn’t Apple all about image? Why are you serving up these ipads at huge prices, (mine is the Ipad2 3g 64gb, top of the line device) and then telling me that this is the last time I can use my warranty? I have 1 year warranty and I’ll use it as much as I can until I get a good device. Even if I wanted to return this ipad I wont get refunded for the 300$ + I’ve spent on itunes for apps for this thing. Anyway…

4. They delivered me the last ipad 2 3g 64gb replacement they had in the store (I had been through all 3 LOL.) so I looked at the back… small scratch on the back but it not deep and black like the previous ones… not great but hey. The screen doesn’t have light bleeding AT ALL. ZERO lightbleeding ANYWHERE on the screen. YES! 4 VISITS TO APPLE STORES IN ONE DAY LATER I WAS DONE (althought theoretically i accepted a device with a scratch on the back)

What is this quality control? Why does it have to be such a hunt to get a cleanly built device every time they release something? Is it part of their business model, that they sell to people who don’t know about technology therefore will tolerate defects? Apple feeds this OCD behaviour, and then train their staff to tell you OK SIR YOU ARE CLEARLY CRAZY APPLE STUFF IS ALL PERFECT ITS YOU NOT US. I remember going through similar nightmares with my iPhone 3gs I switched it out 8 times before finding one that didn’t have white specks of crap under the screen or unevenly lit screens. I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S II phone last week as a contract renewal – guess how many devices I switched before finding a perfect one. That’s right, NONE. It was perfect out of the box, the FIRST DEVICE THEY SENT ME. Apple are taking the piss with this.

Anyway about what I’m guessing is a Samsung screen – it is warmer but you guys are exaggerating the yellowness of it. Trust me – I am OCD about image quality. I think this is by far the superior screen – pictures and movies look night and day better on this screen than the previous blotchy (assumed to be LG) screen. Ok – the LG got brighter on the top end, but this does give much better colors overall and it is NOT yellow, the white is slightly warmer, but yellow is an exaggeration. I am very happy with the new screen and I wish you all luck on your hunt to get a “Perfect” iPad from “we know better than you” Apple.

I went through this with a bunch of iPhone 4's. The one I ended up keeping still had cosmetic problems, but they were minor--and that one was a new in the box replacement--new headphones, charger, everything. I was beginning to think Apple couldn't make a mint condition product anymore. If I scratch it up, that's one thing. If they give me one already scratched up, that's a whole other can of worms.

My first iPad 2 had dust under the screen, very very very very minor light leakage and a couple of tiny black dots on the back. I was able to deal with all of it except for the dust under the screen. I took it back and got a replacement with absolutely 100% no problems of any kind--no light leak, no dead pixels, no dust (yet), no scratches on the back, sides, or glass.

So my faith has been mostly restored, but we'll see if this replacement gets dust. I was told at the Apple store that they would only replace one time for that problem and that my first one was "within spec", so if it happens again, I guess I just have to deal with it.
