I think it's safe to say that:

1. The issue has NOT been resolved or at least:

2. Apple is (via the one-swap per person deal) trying to get SOME unsuspecting customers to accept these somewhat faulty displays.

I'll be waiting a bit longer before trying to buy again it would seem.

If you're going to wait, why not wait for Ipad 3?

got my unit today.... yup.. has bleeding.. going back for a refund.

they must figure a good 60% will just keep the device regardless...

I'll say this, when I returned my first unit for bleed the guy didn't even check it, grabbed a new one and I asked "what if this has bleed?" and he said, "you have a 1 year warranty, bring it on back in if it does". It did, so I brought it in today and they didn't have any in the back so the guy ordered me a new one, chatted with me about audio and garage band on iPad and was real cool. Sent me on my way telling me I would be called when my unit came it.

Sucks the problem is there but the service has been nothing but stellar for me so far.

I received my white 32GB iPad 2 today. (sn# starts with DLXF)... minor light bleeding that is only noticeable in a completely darkened room. I compared it to my iPad1 (received on launch day).

The interesting thing about the difference is that the iPad1 appears to have an even light bleed (of nearly the same intensity as what I'm seeing on the iPad2) that washes across the entire screen... making it almost "shimmer". In contrast, the iPad2's screen is the blackest of black except where there is the light bleed.

I'll be keeping this iPad2... the light bleed is not any worse than what I have with the iPad1... and I didn't notice that my iPad1 had bleeding (even though I checked for it) until comparing it to the iPad2.

i agree... there's something about the ipad1's screen that makes whatever bleeding it has alot more tolerable.. ipad2 bleeding seems to "bloom" out at certain areas and makes it very distracting once you see it..

same here, getting a replacement

Just echoing the sentiments thrown all around. I've had mine replaced twice. On launch, my unit would power off and had a light-bleed, curtain effect going around three sides. Took it in the next day and got another one. I had to take that one back because of backlight bleeding AND a torn rubber seal. Because I've noticed "pixel anomalies" more and more while using my iPad, I decided to go back and get a new one.

So, last saturday I took it into the Apple retail store here in Charlotte. The Genius was courteous and amiable, offering to replace my iPad again with no hassle. That day they ordered a replacement and I signed the little sheet authorizing the repair. I chose the in store option as I could retain my iPad while waiting for the replacement to arrive to the store.

Flash forwarding to this morning (Thursday at around 12:30 EST), I checked my repair status at supportprofile.apple.com only to see that the repair was complete... today. Keep in mind, it was 12:30 in the morning... Needless to say I have not received my replacement iPad, nor any notifications from Apple staff. Going to call in the morning to see what is up.

Keep up the good fight, but be reasonable. If you can only notice it in the dark on high brightness you may not need to return it. However, if you are like me and so many others who can see it in regular lighting conditions, I understand your pain.

I got an iPad 2 since launch day and was experiencing problems such as light bleed, and a few others. I placed an order on April 25, and received my iPad 2 today. i noticed that the screen doesn't have any light bleeds plus the serial number is different from the first batch. I think Apple did follow up on this issue.

Of course the serial number is different -- every single iPad has a unique serial number.

Currently waiting in line for a return and re buy at the Mall at Millenia in Orlando. Been here for an hour already, iPads go on sale in 2hrs. About 25 people here, most looking for AT&T 3G (foreign tourists). This is a small crowd. Yesterday there were 65+.

Considering that this thread is now 107 pages, this sounds like a pretty serious problem.

I haven't noticed any of this backlight bleeding on mine, but for what its worth here's my recommendation.

Unless you just bought your iPad2 from Best Buy or another retail store other than Apple and can take it back for an exchange immediately, unless it's causing you serious problems, you might be better off waiting for another month or two.

After all, it's warrantied for a year, and there might be a few additional "tweeks" or other improvements that Apple just might come out with, even in the current generation of iPad 2. So if you wait, you could end up with even a better product.

This way, you also wouldn't have to deal with the current shortages, and end up having to wait, possibly for weeks on end, for a replacement.

The one on the right is the one that was purchased at Best Buy. The one on the left was overnighted by Apple (came from PA). It has a scrape on the metal near the earphone jack and also separation there just like the first one.
It isn't that bad of an issue to me, but for the cost of it, it shouldn't have the light issues.
Not sure if I should return the one on the right to Best Buy and the other to Apple and just wait, or keep one and then do an exchange later.

The both have an issue with the sound in certain apps not being adjustable (full volume even when turned all the way down.

When apple sends us a brown box replacement do they really check the device properly and specific issue for which the device was exchanged ? Or they just put a new iPad in the brown box and send ?

i believe its just thrown in a box and shipped without being checked.

Fixing my Backlight bleeding tonight

I have an appointment for the apple store! yay! Im gonna see if I can switch to white. The main reason for my switch though, is there is a small dink in my top right corner of the aluminium and I feel it when I press the home button. I figured I could always swap it out and I would wait for a real scratch that bothered me. This one ticks me off. does that make sense?

And based on what I received via brown box, I doubt these are new.

Screen had dust under it, dead pixels, screen was very dim even at 100%. Weird.

Even the box looked like it had been opened once already by someone else before me.

Any of you out there looked at the xoom screens? I have and the ones I have seen do not suffer with this issue.

I have the black wifi only. Another weird manufacturing flaw is that there was a little bit of gummy glue sticking out on the top above the camera...I'll go to the apple store sunday and see if I can't get a replacement.

Why don't you go to the Apple store on Sunday and see if you can get a replacement.

Just got back from the apple store with my replacement ipad 2 for the light bleed issue. A Pic taken at 100% brightness in a closet is below.

There is still slight bleed in the same areas as my last screen, specifically to the right of the home button and in the lower left corner (not visible in this picture), but it is not noticeable in normal use so I am very happy with it.

From what I can tell this screen is even brighter and more vivid than my previous screen. Also the new screen is about the same warmth as my previous screen.

The fact that the new and previous screens both have varying degrees of bleed in the same areas suggests they are from the same manufacturer. This suggests that LG may have in fact got their act together. So don't give up hope on getting a good screen.

I am not sure if it matters, but the Apple store had to order my replacement iPad and the genius said there was actually a box to check for light bleeding so the issue must be common. That is not surprising given the length of this thread. However, this along with the fact that I received a good replacement screen may indicate that Apple has replacements set aside specifically for OCD people who notice the light bleed.

By the way the only defect I have noticed so far is a slight imperfection in the aluminum on back. I'm not going to worry about that though. I don't have to look at it.

I finally got my replacement after waiting three weeks. The backlight bleeding is worse than my old one. I sent it back to Apple and they told me that they could see nothing wrong with it. They're now sending it back to me. I know for a fact that there's something wrong with it. What should I do?

Take it to the store.

I had a 16GB AT&T WiFi+3G model that had moderate backlight bleed around the edges. I just exchanged it for a 32GB AT&T WiFi+3G model and with this iPad, the bottom right corner has very apparent backlight bleed. *sigh* To be honest, I'd rather the moderate spread out backlight bleed.
