What's the reasonable time limit on trying an exchange? Had mine nearly a month and ideally would like one with much less significant bleed. Have I left it too late?

I'm wondering too. I purchased mine online day 1, got it about three weeks later, and i've lived with the light bleed. ...but since starting to use it for watching movies, it's become pretty distracting. Wonder if there's any hope for a replacement.

I'm sure you guys can still get a replacement for the light bleed issue.

If you've got an Apple Store near you, kindly make a Genius appointment & go get your iPad 2 replaced. If there's no Apple Store near you &/or you think it is more convenient, kindly make a call to the Apple Support hotline & get them to replace your "faulty" iPad 2.

Good luck. :)

Oh, I see. Go for a refund then. I'm sure Apple will be more than willing to give you a full refund for all the hassle/trouble that you've gone through.

By the way, are you going to get any other tablets to "replace" the iPad 2?

Good luck. :)

Well I've been looking at other tablets. That Asus eeepad looks ok. I'm not that keen on android, but it does seem to be coming on. The only other option is to buy a high end netbook or ultra portable. I just want something that is light and that I can carry around with me. :):)

All this back and forth has put a sour taste in my mouth for Apples though.

Let's hope number four is the one. A little bit of bleed I can live with hell my iPad1 has some bleed. It's the dead pixels which get me. Three iPad2's so far all had bleed and dead pixels man that's just awful.

Maybe spend more & buy a 11.6" MBA (when Apple releases its refresh)? :)

...but sure enough no bleed...minimal at best, and i mean minimal, maybe a 2cm bulb is visible but only if you look really hard.

I'm glad you are excited, but considering iPad 2's LCD is 25 centimeters diagonally (9.7 inches), a 2 centimeter light leak would be unacceptable for me. :D

the girl at my apple store said i could use a one-time exchange anytime within the 1-year warranty...so if they fix the production issue in 2 months, i could bring my iPad in and swap it out.

I really hope she wasnt full of ****...but if they deny me, then i'll just cause a respectful ruckus and see what happens.

I don't understand their "one-time exchange" rule. If they exchange it for light leakage, and the replacement is the same or worse, then it only seems logical that they'd exchange the replacement too. Unless, of course, the leakage is actually considered "normal" or "within specs" in which case they're only doing the first exchange out of the kindness of their hearts. Either way it's crap that Apple's basically implying that we're ultimately going to have to live with this.

I think you've just answered your own question. Apples does not technically/legally consider backlight bleeding to be a manufacturing defect for warranty purposes. They''re allowing exchanges as a goodwill gesture, according to the Apple Store employee I spoke with.

If you buy your iPad 2 at the Apple Store, you can get a refund and buy another one. Repat, and repeat again, until you find one that has no backlight bleeding issue.(correction: one that the smallest amount of backlight bleeding acceptable to your eyes :) )

My co-worker is super an*l when it comes to electronic gadgets. He has purchased/exchanged/refunded 6 iPads so far. The 6th is "acceptable" according to him. The Apple Store employees didn't seem to care that he bought/returned 5 times. (5 different transactions)

2-3 more months.... Maybe by then, it may even be better to wait a few more months for the release of the iPad 3 & buy one of those instead. :p

Just kidding, of course.

It just really grinds my gears when I am reading in this thread some users here are getting so desperate to the point that if they finally get a unit that has a "near-perfect" screen (after a bazillion exchanges), even if this unit has a bump, scratch, or dent in the back - they finally decide to keep it.

To me that is unacceptable as a new-product (especially if your paying for the Apple-quality premium price), but alas as long as people have GOT to have that iPad now, Steve Jobs can shove dirt down our throats if he wanted to and we'll still take it...

What kind of Quality-Control game is Apple playing these days? I feel disheartened... :(

Finally got an email saying my replacement was sent.

The replacement serial,
DLXFM

Judging by this serial, Im not to confident that this one will be any better since it was manufactured at the same time as my old one.... :(

Oh man I just got a replacement unit - looks horrible :(

1 hour of my life at the apple store I will never get back

I'll post up model # and pics soon

Yesterday I went to the Apple store at South Coast Plaza in Orange County and the genius was very nice - he told me that the policy they have been told communicate is "1 replacement allowed due to light leak problem only". He did let me look at the brown box replacement iPad before I left but it was hard to tell in the store. I brought a hoodie and probably looked like a fool huddled under it trying to find light leakeage on the new one.
That has been my experience as well as that's the same store I went to. See my earlier post about my experience of trying to get a refund for the replacement.

But theres bad news in all of this...but i kind of don't care cause i'm already past my wits end. I felt a little indentation on the back aluminum. Sure enough, theres a tiny dent on the back...
Hey! Maybe that indentation spot fixes the backlight bleed! ;)

Got my 4th replacement iPad2 in the mail today from Applecare replacement (brown box). The serial number was 1 digit off from the last defective one and sure enough, it was much worse than the last one =/ Here's hoping for lucky number 5.

Do u get to hold onto ur iPad? Then return it?

No. Both times it's considered sending it in for repair, even though they are going to replace it. I had to wait about 5 days total for the first mail replacement. The previous replacements I got were in-store, but I got tired of driving down to the Apple store and feeling like a technology hypochondriac.

Replaced my iPad 2 at Best Buy today. Now I only have backlight bleeding coming out of 1 (maybe 2) areas. I'm not too happy about it. I paid good money for this over-priced tablet, and I want it flawless. I agree with an earlier poster, how can anyone stand for this? I'm not furious or anything, but I am a little disgruntled.

EDIT: Maybe someone's mentioned this already... But why don't we all just hang onto these iPads and wait a month or so till non-screwed up models are released, then go to Apple for a replacement? We'll clearly be within the 1 year warranty, and it'll take less trouble... I hope.

Haha yeah I'm just gonna get a zagg leather skin on the back to cover it up when they become available. My coworker went to the valley fair San Jose apple store and got his replaced...cause he dropped it but wouldn't own up to it. His replacement, of coarse, has no light bleed. I say of coarse because if I got mine replaced it would most likely have light leak.

Hi everyone!
Another iPad 2 user with backlight screen bleeding... :(
After waiting for more than 20 days, got my unit yesterday. I bought it on the Austrian Apple Online Store.

It's a white 32GB WiFi model, and at first didn't even know about this issue, but after playing with the device, watching some videos and playing some games, the bleeding became noticeable.

For those who haven't tested their iPads, here's a way to quickly test if a unit shows a backlight bleeding or not:
http://www.gilsmethod.com/how-to-determine-if-your-ipad-has-a-bleeding-screen

I'll upload some pictures later to compare it with others. I'm 99% sure that I'll ask for a replacement, but don't know when to do it... And of course, the replacement should be backlight-bleeding-free but who can guarantee that?!

Thx everyone for all the information!
Apple should definitely report this problem...
