I am now convinced that the light bleed issue is at least partially being remedied by whoever does the refurbs, or it's just not as big of a problem as it seems at first glance.

My personal iPad woes stem from dust under the screen. My first one had almost no light bleed (just one or two small spots), but started developing lots of dust under the screen in a short period of time.

I traded for a second iPad which basically had zero light bleed, but ended up having 3 dead pixels as well as a dime sized area under the screen where it looked like some specks of water had gotten in and dried--there were little grayish white speckles that were pretty visible in certain light, but usually invisible. Last night I traded this unit in because of the worsening dead pixel problem.

My new iPad has very little bleed--about like my first one, just a small amount in a couple of spots along the edge. It has no dead pixels at all. There is one speck of dust under the screen that is pretty visible if you spend a second or two and look for it. I will probably hang on to this unit, as I don't think Apple is capable of giving me something without crap under the screen.

My point is, I've had 3 iPad 2s in a row that for all intents and purposes have NOT had the light bleed problem, and I have had seen some pretty bad cases of it on this thread alone. I have never had anything that looked like the flashlights shining from the corner and edges like I have seen on some peoples' units. So I think for the people who get it, they get it REALLY bad, but are probably the vocal minority. You also have to account for the fact that most people are not going to notice this and are not that OC about it.

P.S.-I will post a s/n and screenshot later when I'm not at work.

Does it have lines on the screen when you sleep and wake quickly?

I bought my ipad2 right after the release and it had pretty bad light leak. I used it for several months and finally decided to bring it into the Apple store today and they replaced it no questions asked. My replacement has no light leak and looks great! I'm not sure why so many people were so scared of this issue? If it has light leak, take it in and they will exchange it.

Ok, so some Apple engineers called me back about the lines on the screen, they said it is completely in-spec and is not considered a defect. After 4 1/2 I have a keeper!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Yeah, i saw my new one do that the first time I turned it on, and it hasn't done it since.

Interesting. I wonder if it's associated with some make of panel or the LVDS driver they use (or something else) in some of the ipads? I watched the video but I've never seen this occur (and have tried to reproduce it) on any ipad I've used.

Why doesn't someone start a new thread entitled "Lines on screen" so we can encourage a whole new slew of people to participate in Apple's National iPad Display Lottery?

I bet those of you who said theres zero light bleed. Has some minimum bleed as well?

anyway my gf ones still has light bleed. and its a replacement would she be able to swap say been using it for months? Coz really , thats hardware issue. and as my understanding , anytime before the 12 months runs out, you are entitle for the warranty?

Not that I can see. I did it like 10 times in a row.

I got my dad an ipad2 for fathers day and his has very minimal light bleed (not enough to replace it or even try to). My original was way worse than his is, but my replacement is even better than his. Either way I'm happy!!

Well, I finally caved and swapped my iPad out this past Saturday.
The new one seems to be much better, almost perfect (just a tiny amount of bleed on the bottom), but nothing even close to my old one.

Good enough for me!

Anyone's iPad a little more yellow tinted on the bottom then the top (in portrait), I know if I exchange again I will get something worse, I just want to know if anyone else has it, it only bothers me a little and I know there is no such thing as a perfect iPad

I see you also posted in my thread on this issue: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1181934/
As I can understand, this is a very common problem. It is probably mostly noticed by people who use the iPad on relatively low brightness.

Ok, well, this color shift is really bothering me, it goes from a brilliant, bright white to a very dull yellow tint. since there are more reports of better screens, i think i should try this one more time before i give up, i really hate doing this again, but i have been told by customer relations these are valid issues and they will keep replacing until i own one without all these ridiculous (but out of spec) issues

Ok. Please let us know how your replacement unit turns out. I am a bit interested as I might reconsider whether to hand mine in - it is a relatively annoying issue. For my usage, it's WAAY worse than bleeding which is a non-issue for me (though I can see it being annoying if using the iPad in a different way). The thing is, I almost exclusively use the iPad for some sort of reading, whether it is on the net, PDF's or whatever. And I prefer a very low light intensity. But at low intensities the yellowing is painfully visible and quite annoying.

Figured I'd chime in since this thread is dying down.
I bought a white 16gb wifi a few weeks after release. Had some pretty significant light bleed on the home button side, though probably not as bad as some. Still, it was enough to see a corner glow while watching a letterboxed movie and a splotch would show up during medium dark scenes within the actual movie frame. It was a DLXF.
Since the problem was pretty rampant, I had no interest in playing the exchange game and just waited for a while. Yesterday, since I was in the store anyway contemplating a MacBook Air purchase, I figured I'd give it one shot.
I was very upfront with the tech about my expectations (hoping for something better but not going to pursue it past this attempt) and offered to compare it to the one brown box replacement they had in stock. If it was apparent right away at the start up screen that the replacement was no better, then he could tape that box right back up and use it for a legitimate customer replacement in the future. I have no interest in making the store open up multiple boxes that they have to send back and couldn't sell/use for other people!
Anyway, the replacement was indeed better, though not perfect. So I took it. :)
It still has a little bleed in almost exactly the same spot, but doesn't have a flashlight like my old one. I can watch letterboxed movies without really noticing it now, so I'm happy. There's a bit of white shift from top to bottom (slight violet on top, slight yellow on bottom) but my old one had this from side to side, as has EVERY fricking LCD screen I've ever seen to some degree, so I can easily get over that.
New serial number is a DKVG. I don't know what the serial numbers mean exactly, but my guess, based on the different starting letters, is that this is an actual service replacement (I.e. "reconditioned") and not a brand new one. Which, since it meets my expectations, I couldn't care LESS about!

Hey, Could you tell everyone what the next letter in your serial number is (thats the week number), also, could you post pictures of the bleeding and of the color shift, i am thinking about exchanging my iPad for a white box replacement, i don't know if the white box would be any better though.

Sure.
Normally, I wouldn't take the ten minutes to do this. But since everyone is usually nice on here and offers me help when I ask, I figured I should pay it forward. :D

New SN: DKVG4
No pics of old one, sorry.
Pics of new one, in order, are landscape and portrait at 100% with auto brightness off, brightness at 50% with ab on (what it will usually be at), safari white screen, and safari with page loaded.
Before anyone says "wow, you still have bleed", BELIEVE me when I say it's much better than the first one I had. First of all, you can barely see any bleed at 50% brightness. You can't even see it at all in the photo, and in person, if any image is loaded, it's pretty much nonexistent. Secondly, if this was a photo of my first one, you'd see a big, bright flashlight on the home button edge, plus weaker lights around the other edges. This one is at least just a dull glow.
Whereas the light bleed usually doesn't show up as badly in photos as it does to the naked eye, I feel like the opposite is true with white uniformity. In these photos, the white shift looks significantly worse than it does in person. If memory serves, my first one had just as bad as a color shift, so I'm used to it.
What really matters here? That I'm happy. If this was the screen quality I got with my first iPad2, I would most likely have not attempted an exchange nor have even noticed any of these issues in every day use.

New one is heaps better. Congrats.

you should be entitled to return it until you're happy with it.

are people all happy with theirs now? or just couldn't be bothered anymore?
my leaks are starting to bug me now!

I have a launch black 32GB WiFi model that has some pretty bad backlight bleeding. I've been holding off as long as possible to see if the problem would sort itself out. I'm considering taking it in in the next week to get an exchange, will report back when I do.

yeah please do.. i use mine mainly in the dark in bed before i sleep.. and even at around 25% brightness, i can see the light leak.

I'm fairly certain Apple fixed the problem. I've purchased 4 of them in the last 60 days and every one has been exceptional.
