Second iPad 2

Been reading this thread for a few days now. I got my original iPad and had bad backlight bleeding. Made an appointment for the Genius Bar and they told me my iPad had to be replaced. Waited a few days and got a call last night that my iPad came in.

I went over to the Apple store during my lunch break and did the exchange easily. Opened the new ipad and went into a dark room to check leakage. Definately still have leakage but not as bad as my original. I guess every single iPad 2 has this problem. I will stick with this one and wait and see if Apple corrects the problem. I do have applecare so I have coverage. See no point in trying to open boxes and find worse ones especially since I have yet to hear of anyone not having an issue. Sad.

Again.. stop. You are wrong. Edge-lit and back-lit are two different things.

You are right, they are. LED Edge lit is different than LED full array back lit. If I used back lit in the same sentence as Edge, then sorry for confusing you. Technically however, an edge lit system provides the backlight for the display, which is what I was referring to. However, the information is accurate, so I'm not sure what you want to "stop", as your one sentence post has offered so much to the discussion already.

When at 100% brightness I have massive leakage on the left side. However at 50% it is not that noticeable and at 30ish I can't see it at all. Good enough for me.

1st iPad 2 (64GB black wifi) leakage - brought to store where they had a replacement saved for me, same issue so no swap. Just got message another came in for me today, they opened to check for same leakage and it was on that one as well. Waiting for another replacement to come in to Apple store and I guess I'll just cross my fingers it's a good one. If it continues I may ask for refund and wait for iPad 3 -

Just got my 16gb iPad 2 yesterday. Took a pic in the dark can see a little yellow or bleeding on the bottom but when watching movies and what not even in the dark it seems fine as of now and my brightness is at 50%. But I am very happy with it other than that! The magnetic cover plus go buy an iPad 1 case and most r cheap and fit great!!! The cover protects my back screen for now.

I have minor backlight bleeding on the lower right. 50% Brightness. I didn't even notice it until i sat in the dark and put up a black background. I think I'm gonna keep this around for a bit, until they have a bunch and the problem is fixed. Heck, I might even forget about it.

Is it worse for a lot of people? Or is it mostly minor like mine?

Well I went to the Apple store this afternoon and waited 45 minutes for the genius bar... The store lighting is so bright that it was hard to see so I told him to take it to the back and also showed him a pic on my phone...

He came out 2 minutes later and said that the head tech said that this is a know issue and give it a few days for the glue to dry... he said applecare will tell you the same thing. I looked at him and said "you've got to be kidding me... wait for the glue to dry?" I said "hasn't this been out of the factory for a few weeks and the glue isn't dry?" He said that it I should wait a few days and that it will go away. I told him I wanted a replacement and he said that they didn't have any... then I said what day should I come back? He said Saturday... Kind of a nightmare for a $650 piece of tech... I may hang on to it for a month or 2 then return it to Target if I am able...

The first Ipad 2 I had purchased the blacklight bleeding was very bad. I'm not very tech savy but when I took it out the box it was something I noticed immediately. Like wow I don't know but this is def not normal. Just got another one and the backlight bleeding is almost non existent. So I guess with these new ipads it's just going to be a hit or miss.

That's bs. When I went they saw it right away and brought out a new one. You should return on the last day of your return window and hopefully by then you'll have a higher chance of finding another one at the store.

second iPad 2

I just received my second iPad 2 today and this one has even worse backlight bleeding... so pissed off. I'm gonna go make a genius appointment right now.

If I wait a month or so to get my iPad replaced will it be a refurb?

Probably. But refurbs are good as new and have all the external parts replaced.

Also, if they ever do fix the bleeding issue, refurbs should definitely have it fixed as they get individual inspection before going out. So you'd probably be more likely to get a unit without bleeding from a refurb down the road than getting a new one now when apparently every one has at least some bleeding.

What determines if you get a refurb or a brand new one?

Because I replaced my iPhone 3G once like 5 months after I bought it and they gave me a brand new one, not a refurb - no hassle at all.

No idea. I'd guess it's on whether they have refurbs or only new ones available.

My point was that people have this silly stigma against refurbs. When the fact is refurbs are LESS likely to have defects as they get thorough individual testing after being sent out.

Unlike new products that are being mass produced and only a small random sample per batch getting any individual inspection.

Refurbs by a manufacture like Apple are good as new with all external parts replaced, have the same warranty as a new unit and are less likely to have defects as they are inspected more thoroughly than new units.

So no reason to shun getting a refurb!

As long as Apple continues to use Edge lit panels, you can exchange until the cows come home, and you'll still have some light bleed. As with the iPad 1 and iPad 2, due to the thin form factor, cost, and success of the product, I see no reason as to why they would change that. Maybe something will be different if a retina type of display makes it, whatever that will look like, but again, no guarantees.

Got my 64 gig wifi only in black today.

Horrible backlight bleed and two dents in the bezel at the bottom. Not what I want to see for a $770 device.

Can I return an Apple Store online purchase to the retail Apple Store?

Not sure when I'll get the chance or if backlight bleed will be any better but this just sucks!

Mine meets the description like yours.

It is disappointing that Apple who presents themselves as designing & building high quality products, would ship something marginal like this.

When you guys are taking these in to show the "geniuses" the problem what are you saying and what do you show them? What brightness level? Do you load a black picture? The lighting in the apple stores are super bright and wash out everything... Tough to see the problem in there.

Btw I called AppleCare and she practically fell off her chair when I told her that the store told me the glue hadn't dried....

I don't want to be done with Apple but after having 2 iPad 2's with light bleeding, 6 defective replacement iPhone 4's from 2 different stores, it has me kind of pissed off. The only thing I still like is my mac book pro...

The 1st day I waited in line for the iPhone 4 at AT&T, got there at 4am so excited. Got home, yellow all over the screen, not glue!

iPad 2 is going back to Target in 90 days, this "quality control" is ****. They need to find a new factory to produce their electronics. One more bad product and I'm out!

I doubt that Apple is really concerned with the small percentage of people that are returning these defective products. i am not that this isn't a problem but Apple is selling these as soon as they can get them in and the majority of people are keeping them. As long as most people are ok with this level of quality we will continue to get products like this.

I wish that my iPad 2 was flawless and I might still try to exchange it, but the pictures I have seen here show that I would have a very good chance of getting an iPad 2 that is actually worse than the one I already have.

Went in today and they are now giving out refurbs. I took mine in and they said it's a glue issue but they'll replace it because mine came with a scratch on the case. I asked for a new one and he said it was, but brought out a sealed brown box. Backlight bleeding is still visible but at 50% it is pretty minor now.

The brown box doesn't necessarily mean that it is a refurb. It could be brand new (and probably is since they have been out for less than two weeks) but they aren't packaged with a charger or brochure.
