I bought mine yesterday when they went on sale in Denmark (first in line). It has some backlight bleeding, put it's not a problem. I never saw it till i looked for it (full brightness, black image and dark room). You can't see it during normal use, not even when it's at 100%.

I have a little backlight bleed on the corners of the screen but it's nothing you can notice or even be an issue.

so far my 1st iPad had a dead pixel and moderate light bleed. This was replaced this morning for an iPad with (in my opinion) far worse light bleed!

I have attached a picture comparing them all (merged in photoshop)

The brightness was at 100%, but the light bleed is very visible from approx 50% upwards (where I usually have mine!)

I think I will give them one more try tomorrow if they have any left, and if there is no improvement will ask for a refund. Hopefully this may be sorted in future batches......

That can be taken two ways - i'll hope you meant it in the more polite way. :)

I just had mine replace - still has a bit of bleed in the same spot as the old one, but so far it looks less prominent and is more acceptable than the original. When I start hearing success stories of this being fixed, I'll get it replaced one last time.

I just got my iPad yesterday and I love it. This morning I try to watch a movie on it and an abnormally high amount of backlight bleeding is occurring above the home button and all along the left side in portrait orientation.

I've been through this entire thread and many others just like it around the Internet and I have yet to see worse than mine. The bleed around my home buttons is about 2" wide and 1" deep.

I'm convinced this is not glue.

Very disappointing :(

QFT - Quoted For Truth. (I didn't know it could be taken another way)

Genius bar. Book it. I'm going tomorrow at about noon.

not sure if anyone read this blurb from anand's very detailed review of the ipad..

stresses, not glue, not faulty display...

There’s been a lot of talk about backlight bleeding on the iPad 2. Initially, I didn’t notice any backlight bleed on my iPad 2, however I now notice a small blotch where backlight bleeds in the bottom right corner. Pressing on the glass surface, I can change the intensity of this backlight bleed, which would imply that the bleed is due to stresses in the glass and TFT like you’d see if you were to press on a panel. It’s not bad at all, especially compared to some of the worst-affected examples I’ve seen in forums online, but hopefully this gets worked out with better manufacturing. Oddly enough, side by side with the iPad 2 the iPad 1 also shows some noticeable light bleed.

So how many people ACTUALLY use their iPad at 100% brightness in a pitch black room?

That's not really the point. Unfortunately many Mac users have a little bit of OCD. Windows, Android, whatever, in our minds they're just buggy workhorses and so we expect less. Apple is supposed to be higher quality though, which is why even little defects just bug the **** out of us.

That's not the issue. But since you've asked lots of people use their iPads in totally dark rooms to watch a movie or whatever.

I use my iPad very often in a dark room to watch movies but brightness is at 50% and I only see a very small bleeding on the right top corner. It is so small that I must try to see it, so of course it is a non issue for me.

Since there a varying degrees of bleeding you cannot assume that it is only visible at 100% brightness. The bleeding on my iPad is still visible at around 30%. Granted I knew where to look, but even if I didn't, I would have still noticed it due to the location in a letter box video/movie.

As for a pitch black room... It doesn't have to be "pitch black" to be noticed, at least not on my screen. I don't know what part of the world you live in, but around here it gets dark at night. Also, usually when I watch movies, I like to watch them in a darker room. Even then, I don't use 100% brightness... I usually use 30-50%, but as I have stated my bleed is still visible at those levels.

USA iPad 2 swapped for a Canadian iPad 2

Just got back from the Apple Store in Pacific Centre, Vancouver. A friend bought me a Black 64 Gig iPad from Austin and it had the backlight bleed problem but also a yellow thumb sized tint in the top left. The backlight bleed wasn't crazy noticeable as the yellow mark on the glass. Every time I was surfing around on websites, all I could see is that mark. Drove me nuts.

As the iPad 2 launched in Canada yesterday, Apple now can support me. Well, they initially said they didn't have any service replacements yet and I would have to wait until they did (they were not sure how long). I asked for the manager as I was really frustrated having to wait even longer. He said because it was a USA iPad they couldn't just swap it out. So, we figured a way around the system by me purchasing a Canadian one and returning the USA one in the box. Anyway, I went away happy that they swapped it out however, I am syncing the new one and can already tell it has worse bleeding that my old one. No signs of the yellow blotch so I am just going to wait a few weeks to see if this gets resolved and swap it out for a good one.

Genius Bar Experience

I just wanted to share my experience with this. I bought an ipad 2 on launch day. I started to notice the light bleed (only after reading about it on these forums). There was a pretty good sized blob on the top or bottom of the screen while watching a movie in netflix depending on how it was held. There were also various smaller instances of it randomly around the edge.

You do not notice it during normal use, however, I decided to take it to Apple to try to exchange to try to get lucky and get one without such a big area of light bleed. I went to the apple store today with the ipad and spoke with the tech. He explained that this is due to the adhesive not setting properly. He stated that 50% of the time this will go away just due to the heat of the device itself allowing the adhesive to set. He swapped mine out anyway in hopes of getting a new one with less bleeding. The new one bleeds still but not to the point where it is noticeable during normal use.

Bottom line I guess is that I think they all have this issue some more than others. I think that maybe over time this problem could either go away or become less noticeable.

I don't think the apple tech flat out lied about the adhesive being the cause of the light bleeding problem. The thing has only been out for a week and if he is right about the adhesive setting this could just go away.

Just exchanged my 16GB Black with terrible bleeding for a 32GB White that is much better. It's still not perfect, but it's no longer distracting. Also, it turns out I kind of like the white iPad.

My ipad had some black light bleed in 3-4 spots.. i swear its gotten better in the 5 days i have had it.

How do you use your iPad @ 50% ? I use mine at min brightness and wish it could be dimmer. Is the iPad 2 that much dimmer than the first gen ?

Every product from any manufacturer is a compromise of design / costs / components used / etc. An iPad is no different. To maintain the profit margin Apple prefers and offer the iPad at the price point it's at, this is the norm. Mine has it too, but I knew to expect & accept it. It's just an iPad. Nothing mission critical.

I have auto brightness on, so the iPad adjusts itself accordingly. The iPad 2 is much brighter than the first generation. People complained that the screen remained the same, but the truth is that only the resolution is the same as before. The screen is of a much better quality and has better contrast and brightness.

Spoke to an Apple support rep. earlier today, they told me they have been getting A LOT of calls about this and are very aware of this issue. They are also pretty much replacing all peoples iPad2s with this problem.

Anyways, I've had it.....I've had bad luck with this backlight bleeding and cannot afford another trip to the Apple store. So I am sending the iPad in this time and I hope I get one of the iPad2s with very minimal bleed, otherwise I think i'll get a refund.

Will they ship out a new one before you send the other back?

Yes! I find this is one of unsung improvements of the iPad 2. At the lowest setting the iPad 2 is considerably simmer than the iPad 1 even though the display is brighter at the max setting. It's still not as dim as the iPod Touch but it definitely makes for a better night reading experience.

backlight bleed in the new dead pixel.

back in the first days of lcds, for the younger ones here, you got a guarantee that no more than say 2-3 dead pixels. So if you got a dead pixel, which in all likelihood you would, you were, well stuck with a stuck pixel. and that was that.

these days there's just not adequate screen tech, and quality control, to assure no backlight bleed in no devices (as is with pixels these days, no dead pixels), so unless it's excessive (then take it back) blame it on the tech, and wait for the new ipads.
