64GB 3G White, I lined up at Charlestown NSW, AU to get mine, no problems whatsoever.

Sorry for those with this problem, as you might be waiting a while for replacements to be available.

Honestly, take it back before your 14 days are up (if possible) and get it refunded if no stock is available for exchange.

Not worth missing out on a brand new swap because you want to see how it goes.

Well, as it turns out, on closer inspection, I do have some tiny levels of screen bleeding on the lower right.

Is only visible on black screen in low light conditions, so I am not too upset.

I might take it in on Monday afternoon and show the genius bar, but I am hearing that most replacement units are the same.

i just got mine from Futureshop Langley and tried to see if there are some light bleed... sure it does! What is you tolerance for light bleed? If you have something like mine... will you keep it or will you arrange for a Genius Bar appointment?

I booked an appointment with the Genius this afternoon and agreed that I do have a "unacceptable" light bleeding particularly on the lower left corner close to home button. The guy at the Apple Store was nice and he arrangde for a replacement but currently no stock. He will call me within 3-5 days as soon as the replacement arrives. I asked if I will be given a refurb and he said it will be brand new. :D

If my replacement will have light bleed again, I will just return it back to FutureShop and wait until the issue has been settled. :apple:

Spoke to an Apple support rep. earlier today, they told me they have been getting A LOT of calls about this and are very aware of this issue. They are also pretty much replacing all peoples iPad2s with this problem.

Anyways, I've had it.....I've had bad luck with this backlight bleeding and cannot afford another trip to the Apple store. So I am sending the iPad in this time and I hope I get one of the iPad2s with very minimal bleed, otherwise I think i'll get a refund.

It's a shame that this happened, but Apple is going to have enough refurbs for a couple years now. Heh.

As if there's not already a shortage of iPad 2's as it is.

Yes, I was told the new one should arrive by Wednesday.

Do you have Apple Care? Also did you go into the store, and the store processed the request, or did you do this over the phone?

Sorry for all the questions... The reason I am asking is because I have an appointment setup Monday morning. However, the Apple store in question is a little over an hour away. They have not been able to confirm over the phone whether or not they will be able to replace in store with the service stock they have, but said they "would take care of me". If taking care of me is placing an order for a replacement, and having me comeback in 3-5 days when it's there, that's not taking care of me, IMO. Especially since I have stressed several times that the distance I am travelling. My last shot is to give them a call at 8am, they said someone will be there even though they don't open till 9am. Hopefully that person can give me more info.

The reason I did not do this over the phone is because I heard you had to have Apple Care to do advance replacements. So I went with the store option, but due to this issue, Apple Care is looking better and better.

My wife's iPad 2 arrived yesterday and it too has pretty bad backlight bleeding. It was shipped from China just recently so I don't think they've corrected the issue yet.

I won't settle for backlight bleed. My iPad 1 had none...and I will wait for a near-future production batch that hopefully will have the problem solved. If not, the iPad 2 is going back to the store.

I purchased 2 Sony digital frames last year and one had backlight bleed. I took it back.

No OCD here...just want some quality control on a relatively pricey item. Good luck to those who currently have iPad 2s afflicted with the problem. By bringing yours back, you are not only helping yourselves, you are creating enough of a problem for Apple that they will fix this issue once and for all hopefully.

QFT.

Also beware that there are some who may be posting here who are nothing more than attention-seeking trolls... using flawed logic to draw people into arguing and debating... while others do so in an attempt to depict those who are experiencing the problem as irrationally emotional. Don't fall for it.

Thank you! I knew there were more rational people with integrity and decent eyesight.

Noticed some backlight bleeding around the edges when the screens on a dark image,

Going to phone my local Apple Store today,

Whats the best to say?

It's best to make an appt. and go in. Tell the dude or dudette at the bar your not happy with screen because of light bleed. They may swap it for a new unit. There's a good chance you get something worse too. Good luck!

I'll set it up in store and say if it does.

After opening at least 8 or 9 brand new boxes and seeing every single one of them had horrible bleed AND cosmetic blemishes (the genius at the bar didn't even bother asking if I wanted it, just kept opening a new one)...

I gave up.

I bought the 64GB 3G model and my personal opinion is if I'm spending that much it shouldn't have these issues. I know that keeping it would just really irritate me.

I actually went to AT&T instead and got the first gen ipad 64GB 3G for $529 and I'm very happy. The only thing the new ipad interest me in was the speed but I'll give it up to save $300. The camera and thickness arent important to me.

Hopefully they resolve this issue soon and people get a good unit. Best of luck everyone!

I wonder if these problems are the result of some rough handling or mishandling of iPad shipments. That would explain the reports of large numbers of defective and damaged units in some stores.

At least this saves me $600 until the issue is fixed. But knowing Apple, they'll simply say its not a problem, and not fix it.

"You're holding it wrong." and all that jazz. :(

To be honest, and I know we don't like to think of this, in the same way we don't like to think of the cow when we order a McDonalds.

The workers in the plants, are probably working long hours and are under a lot of pressure to assemble "x" iPads per hour on their mass production lines.

I know from personal experience, no two people are the same in manufacturing, and even in the same business you will get some people who will do a better job than others, or take more care.

If we are not using robots, then there will be variations. That's why you need a very good quality control dept to keep everything in check.

This is a really big issue. Apple store employees have recognized the issue and have swapped the iPads each time. I'm on iPad number 5! And even this one has light bleed problems. Apples quality control is terrible. the service is great through, but it's not my job as the customer to play quality control for them. For 500 plus tax items manufacturing new out of the box are unreasonable.

As for all of the apple apologists saying'" just live with it". They are out of touch, insulting and frankly really irritating. They can buy all the defective products and I'll take the iPad with functional screen.

I will never purchase an Apple product when they are just released ever again, because I'm not interested in beta testing their devices. Note: Apple employees know, recognize and confirm this problem with IPad 2s. They additionally told me that they are sending each returned swapped iPad express back to corporate apple headquarters. They thanked me for returning the devices so that they may figure out the problem and their service was excellent the entire time.

+1

Every time I read a post where someone writes "it's not that bad, I'll keep mine" makes me wonder... are we so beholden to our consumer technology gadgets that we're willing to give up on common sense? This whole thing is starting to sound vaguely reminiscent of religion... sure, my brain and common sense tell me one thing but I'm going to go ahead and do the irrational thing.

I got burned as an early adopter of the iPhone 4. I was one of the first batch of pre-orders and my iPhone 4 arrived with a "spotlight" light bleed in the lower right corner. I ordered an advance replacement from AppleCare within 3 days and got a perfect unit shortly thereafter. Given the issues with "antennagate" and my screen bleed, i will never buy a new Apple product right out of the gate until it's gone through at least one or two manufacturing revisions.

Is there a way to know what "revision" iPad we're getting? With Macs it's fairly common to know if you have a "rev. A, B or C" product, each letter pointing to a later production run of the same model.

iPad 2 went back

Bought the iPad 2 on launch here in Canada at a local futureshop.. pulled it out of the box, the itunes connect screen came up.. noticed the bleed on the bottom of the screen and it went back in the box and returned to futureshop instantly.

It's an epidemic, sorry... faint bleeds may be acceptable (tolerance), but huge blotches on the edges of the screen at 50% brightness is not. There is no excuse for the design/manufacturing flaw.

People who are accepting this probably have no concept of it being a problem or are just willing to overlook the scratches on their new car.

The best way to get apple to correct this issue is to return them instantly. Sales numbers and complaints is what they pay attention to.. Not warranty claims 3 months down the line when the sale is a secured transaction.

i would try not to use the words 'common sense' here. sounds really preachy.
if you don't wanna keep your iPad, bring it back.
If you don't have an iPad, don't buy one.
Freedom of choice is a real blessing.
Don't judge those who really don't think it's a big issue for them, don't pretend that people who take things more lightly than you are some sort of Apple-religious fanatic.

Some could even say it's 'common sense' to keep a device that, as to one's own perception, works perfectly fine, not wanting to give it away for a single minute.

You do not need Applecare. I assume since the iPad2 just came out, they are handling returns and assisting people more-so then then they normally would.

I simply called Apple Support and this was all done over the phone, they were very helpful and apologetic.

If you don't mind waiting a few days, call support and do it through them. Driving one hour to the Apple store might not be worth it (especially when this can be done over the phone). All you'll have to drive to is a local UPS to ship back your iPad2 (you have to send it back, regardless if Apple sends you the replacement iPad first, obviously).

Thanks. I'm going to call them tomorrow morning before I start my drive to confirm if they are going to be able to help me. If they tell me they have not service unit available, then i'll call Apple Support instead.

I realize I will have to send them back my iPad, but my understanding was that if you don't have Apple Care, then you would have to send yours back first before they send a replacement. Is this not the case? Will they do an advance replacement regardless?

They seem to be really around the edges mostly, one was a very deep scratch or two down the middle. I don't know how they assemble or take them off the line but whatever it is, someone isn't be careful enough.

I don't have Applecare, but in my case they said they were going to ship the replacement iPad in advance for me. I don't know if they are doing this for everyone, or if it just depends on the Advisor you speak to? Something tells me they aren't doing this for everyone and it just depends on how nice the Advisor is. I explained to him my troubles with this issue and maybe that inclined him to ship it now and not make me wait any longer as I already have.

+1 - the more iPads you return and they replace, the more they are spending on logistics, man hours, repair and diagnostic time, etc. In the long run though, its all relative and Apple won't see as significant a hit as we think with how much they are making off of each combined with the fact that every one sent back can be refurbed and resold, replenishing stock.

No, it's not. Stop trying to comfort yourself with stupidity. All you are doing are restocking their refurb inventory and wasting your own time and gas. They have people SPECIFICALLY hired to deal with this, they don't suddenly need people to start working overtime, or to hire more employees to handle each individual like yourself. Your delusional and quite frankly absolutely ignorant to the highest degree if you keep buying something from someone who you think keeps selling you broken ****.

The only thing to do, to really make a statement, is to get your money back from apple. Leave the iPad 2s for the lot who keep whining about not being able to find them, why are you running through eight or nine if you know they have this problem? One idiot in this thread made the right decision since he thinks this issue is so bad by not buying the iPad 2, but then goes and shows apple by buying the iPad 1!

It's hilarious, because the true fanboys are those that, upon receiving something that is unsatisfactory, continue to exchange for a new one, instead of ceasing to support apple with their money. And then they have the nerve to tell people enjoying their iPad 2 that we're dumb for settling for something we are aware of. Unbelievable.

You do understand that refurbishing isn't so much profitable as it is more cost effective than just throwing them away.

The fact is apple reports they replace the entire shell, the battery and the screen on a refurb, those parts aren't cheap, it takes more time and energy to tear down 1 iPad to rebuild it than it would to build a new one.

Also, keep in mind the iPad 2 will be substantially more work to refurb because it's sealed with glue as opposed to clips.

And regardless of whether or not they are refurbishing them, to the stores, and to Apple at time of refund/exchange, it's still a loss, otherwise their books wouldn't balance.
