Honestly guys, dont waste your time returning and exchanging now. You will either get the same or worse, unless your's is soooo bad anything is better.

Yeah I have bleed on mine, based on pictures here I have seen in this thread its about slightly better than average. Does it bother me? YES.. im OCD about my apple stuff. But in 95% of the time I dont notice it.

Do I want a replacement? YES.... but until apple acknowledges the problem or we get confirmation from new batches this has silently been fixed I am not wasting my time going to the ZOO that is the apple store.. they will all be like that until something changes on apples end.

Keep making noise though, we need a big outcry to have action taken. Apple wont just fix it without it, or else we wouldn't be in this situation now.

Just my advice.. I see alot of wasted time and frustration in this thread, hoping this may ease some of it.

Like most here I also have a backlight bleed issue and slight color gradient (cool to warm) across the screen. IMHO playing the exchange game right now isn't going to get me a unit that's significantly better than what I already have and it's not like anyone has stock anyway.

I'm so glad I got my iPad 2 from Target...I'll hang on to what I have until June and then try for an exchange. 90-day return policy FTW!

I am so glad I waited! I love it! No headaches! No need to look past an obvious issue with a new product I purchased. No need to run back and forth to Apple! Sweet! I will just wait until all of the screwed up iPads are sold to everyone and then wait for the real release of the the iPad 2 in around May or June. Most of you are just doing QC for Apple. Have fun!

Hey, just wanted my experience. This is my White 16GB Wi-Fi iPad 2, purchased the day after launch from an Apple Store. I honestly didn't notice it until I saw this thread. Not as bad as other's on here. I called AppleCare and said it was a known issue and took down that I called so it was in the system should I want to replace it when stock is more readily available. Don't think it's bad enough to warrant a replacement but wanted some outside opinions.

If that's at 100% brightness it's not bad at all... problem is on a lot of them you can easily see it at 30% etc. If it doesn't bother you I'd hang on to it.

Of course I don't have my brightness up at this end viewing your pic so others may think differently.

Nice that you phoned in your concern so Apple is fully aware of it and can hopefully tweak their production methods somewhat.

Well said...No point in exchanging now as the replacement units are likely to have the same quality control issues. Apple needs to get a handle on what's going on and only then would it be worth exchanging for a new unit.

I waited a week to see if the light bleed would go away once everything cured, but it hasn't improved at all. I decided to call Apple Care last night just to log a case for the issue so when I do take it in to the Apple Store, there would be a record of my issue already.

The first CSR I spoke to said it was a known issue and almost immediately passed me on to a senior rep. The senior rep asked me a few questions (When did you notice it? Where is it located on the screen?) but never once mentioned they were aware of a larger issuer. He offered me the three replacement options and because I have three Apple stores in my area I chose to take it in at some point in the near future to have it replaced.

I plan on taking mine back to a store in the next week or so once supplies have built up a bit and the issue has been fixed. I will probably have them open the replacement iPad in the store to make sure it does not have the issue either.

When you open it up in the store do not waste your time under those bright lights. Make sure you look at it in a darkened room. You'll probably still see the bleed but hopefully it'll be acceptable to you. Good luck!

I honestly didn't notice it until I saw this thread. Not as bad as other's on here.

This is the problem with forums. The guy was completely happy with his purchase until he entered Macrumors OCD land. Forums can be very informative, but sometimes they are counterproductive.

Reminds of a time when I purchased a DLP television. I was perfectly happy with the set, until I read about the 'rainbow' syndrome in the AVSforum. Rainbow colors appear on the screen if you rapidly move your eyes across the screen that is a result from the RGB light head used to project the image onto the screen. Not everyone can see it, so it only bothers a select few.

Of course, I couldn't see it until I read about it on a forum like this, then I started looking for it, and low and behold, I initiated myself into the minority that can see it. Again, an inherent characteristic of the technology, but I ultimately exchanged for an LCD TV instead.

It might be true that people who come here can more easily find such a problem but it doesn't mean they won't over time on their own and it also doesn't mean that the issue is somehow less important. I'm getting a little tired of this OCD talk. I think gadget types like the stuff they buy to be in good working order without defects. Seems like a pretty reasonable thing to me.

Not to feed the fires any more than need be...

but I noticed backlight bleeding on my wife's ipad2 as well. Even before I came to do a search about it on the forums - I'll have to check it again.

(My main concern is that the internet randomly stops working - even though still connected to the wifi - which might be my router or a IP conflict.)

Anyways, I know this might sound like a stupid question, but since I purchased the ipad2 at Target would I HAVE to return/exchange at Target or since it's an Apple product (and covered by a warranty) I could have it returned/exchanged at an Apple store?

You missed a key part of my reply. That was in regard to the DLP television set, the 'rainbow effect' was inherent to the technology. It was not a flaw, just a part of what made the set what it was. Everything has a trade off. In terms of DLP, you had the rainbow effect and poor viewing angles. Plasma panels, you have the screen door effect, and loss of gas over time which slowly dulls out the projected image. Then you have LCD which has not as deep blacks and light bleed in the edge lit method of backlighting.

So you either accept the technology for what it is, or move on as I did with my DLP. I couldn't deal with the rainbow effect, but exchanging it a million times was not going to get rid of it, as it was part of the set. Same thing with these type of LCD panels. Until Apple decides to upgrade their panels, if that is even possible, you are going to keep getting the same thing in some degree. Not sure why that is so hard for some people to understand.

First of all the screen door effect is a common complaint of LCDs (maybe for plasma too but haven't heard about it) and one that I can see. The gas comment on the plasma is not quite right either. Yes a panel will lose brightness but we are talking years of usage and probably will be an old TV at that time that someone wants to replace.

seemed like my bleeding got better.

used to be at all 4 corners and a some on the bottom edge but not it's just a little at the top left corner and a little on the bottom edge. this is with 100% brightness which i don't have it at.

Just got a call from apple asking how my new iPad was holding up and if I still had issues that they'll replace it...I guess that's a step in the right direction

I have my iPad since last Friday evening and I cannot see any bleeding. On the first two days there was some bleeding to see, but now I see nothing. Maybe I got used to it:)
It was anyway very hard to see and I had to try really hard to spot it.

Just went to my genius bar appointment. The guy told me apple was aware of the problem but it was "within spec" and told me he could exchchange it one time but told me the new one "could be better, could be worse"

Not happy about it. Mine is very bad. He didn't have one in stock so I have to wait a day or two.

Just went and picked up my replacement. They called an told me to being box/charger/cable.

They had a new iPad 2 in full retail box for exchange. Didnt open it in store, just took it over the the ghost armor stand and opened it there to have a screen protector and have them install my icarbons skin.

Got it home and synced up. Took it into a dark room and cranked up the brightness all the way. Sure enough it has ligh bleed. Not as bad as the first and bleeding in different spots.

When I have it in normal light an set the brightness to my normal the bleed is invisible. I will keep this one unless there is some sort of breakthrough.

Haha. Well I'm not overly OCD but expect good quality for my hard-earned money. I went throug several iPhone 4's because they all had the green blob on the camera and/or a yellow tint on the screen. Finally got a good one and the battery doesn't last. With the iPad the brightness in my photo is at about 60%. And it's only noticeable on black screens which I'm not often on. Everything else works beautifully though; no batter issues, no wifi issues. So Im hesitant to switch it for one which may have other symptoms. I'll see how I live with it over the next few weeks and if it keeps bothering me I might switch it. But only for a new unit, not for a refurbished, genius bar unit.

i can understand some complaints from other users that this is within spec or this is a non issue. thats fine. I also said the same thing to the apple rep who called me. He asked if I still have the screen bleeding issue. I replied "yeah, but its not a big deal anymore, I just don't watch movies on it at night, or turn my brightness up past 40%, and only use white backgrounds for my home screen and lock screen. When he heard me say that he chuckled and said "then you're not getting your moneys worth.", i said "well within reason, people have been complaining that I'm OCD looking for issues, so rather than look for issues, I'm just trying to avoid them altogether since this is wide spread.", he paused for a moment and said "thats just ridiculous. if you're not happy with it, we'll exchange it."

I explained thanks but no thanks, my screen bleed isn't as bad as my previous units. Near the end of our conversation he said, "well hey, my manager will allow me to give you a 40% discount off your next apple purchase.", I said..."thats cool, I guess...", with a pause he says "and a smart cover!" I laughed...couldn't help myself, "a leather smart cover?". He replies "whatever makes you happy." lmao. sure.

so while they do still acknowledge the issue it seems that A: They now have backup stock which he assured me has been 100% tested and B: They're willing to go the extra mile to make sure you're happy.

honestly, i don't really care about the screen bleed anymore. I've put too many apps and movies and music on my iPad to get another replacement, like i said, i just stopped using it as much at night...if thats a downside, i havent found it yet.

That's great service, I can't imagine Apple doing that for all affected customers. Just wondering, why did they ring you to ask about the problem? Did you ring earlier and they were following up?

Where can I call AppleCare ...

There is bleeding. But from normal usage its really not noticeable. I do understand people who want to get a perfect one for the amount of money they spent but to be quite franc, I do believe that all iPad 2s (as of now) have some sort of backlight bleeding. Thankfully the bleeding in both of mine do not bother me that much, so I will just keep them. Im quite happy with them actually.

my 64gb black is similar to your white one. On the left hand side down the screen, like yours, I have the same 3 points of pressure(what looks like pressure), but instead of just 3, mine has 5 going from top to bottom of the left hand of the screen and one little bleed off to the right of the home button...again, similar to yours.

i'm learning to deal with it, as i typically watch movies on it in my bedroom while my gf is asleep.
