I guess I just don't care about this problem. I am really really anal about my iPhone and will go to the Apple store at the drop of a hat if there is a problem, but my iPhone has a little light bleed at the top of the screen, and it just doesn't bother me.

A lot of the pictures I've seen of the iPad 2's with this problem just don't worry me. Most of them aren't that bad. The ones where the light bleed covers 2/3 of the screen would cause me to return, but if I get small areas in the corners or along the edge here and there, I don't think it would bother me in the slightest. I think most of my lcd devices do this to some degree. And why bother with getting into that viscious return cycle until you know Apple is doing something about it?

I'd rather wait to hear reports that most of them are going out completely devoid of light bleed and THEN return it IF it's bothering me.

And, what are normal conditions for you??? For me normal conditions is to watch a movie at night while I am travelling and if when I do that, I see 5 spots of yellow bleed in the black part then the product is defect. (the other three sides are fine but the one with the magnets is really bad)

I also watch movies in the dark with brightness up to 50% and I see no bleeding. If I turn the brightness up to 100% then I see a little bit of bleeding. That is for me normal. If you see a lot of bleeding when using the device under your normal conditions, then return it.

This is my experience as well. I'm still not sure how/why anyone would want to watch a movie at 100% brightness in a dark room. If you're having light bleed issues at 50%, then return it. Honestly though, if I had one complaint about the iPad 2 it's that the screen is too bright at the lower settings.

I actually agree with you but it does sound like you care about this problem. If you are like me you might not care if there is a little bit of light-leak that isn't visible (unless you REALLY look for it) under normal conditions (watching movies, in bed, in the dark is normal IMO). I have seen a good bit of images and even YouTube videos where I thought the light-leak wasn't that severe. I think it was a YouTube video (can't remember I've researched this a good bit) where the guy was pointing out "leak" and I thought the screen looked fine.

We agree though it seems in that when light-leak makes it's way around the screen (I had at least 8 splotches on two iPads) then there is an issue. There are some that are making a mountain out of a molehill but there are as many, if not more, IMO that have legitimate complaints. I personally feel my 8+ splotches was a legitimate complaint and Apple agreed.

I also agree with this. The iPad 2 at 100% is crazy bright. I don't think I will ever surpass 75% level. I have to say thought that all my usage was at about 50% and was able to see the splotches [not normal].

I got a replacement iPad 2 today. It is not perfect, but it is better. It might even be tolerable. It is physically flawless, no nicks or scratches.
many of these photos are taken with a black screen in very low light, would someone care to clarify how noticeable it is otherwise?
My original iPad 2's issue could not be seen in the Apple store, even while displaying a black wallpaper at full brightness. The genius had to take it into a back room. He emerged saying he saw the problem clearly. The problem would be evident in an airplane during a night flight, or in bed, or in a romantic restaurant.
Still holding on to mine till someone someplace sees improvement then its off to the Apple store.
Wait no longer. If you're looking for flawless, it may not happen. But if you have a serious issue, get it replaced.
When the time comes both go back to the Apple store and I pity the Genius that waits on me.
Yes, because it will be their fault you have a flawed iPad. Give 'em hell.
Honestly though, if I had one complaint about the iPad 2 it's that the screen is too bright at the lower settings.
Yes, I'd like the low end of the brightness setting to go even lower. At low light it is sensible to reduce the brightness so you don't blow out your eyes anyway. If you see flashlighting or leakage at a comfortable brightness then a replacement is warranted. Last night I read for 15 minutes in total darkness before bed on my replacement device, using the Kindle app set to night mode (white text, black background). I wasn't thinking about this issue, and I didn't notice any "flashlights."

spblat,
If you take your iPad 2 to a "romantic" restaurant we all need to have a sit-down with you.:)

There would be no need of such a thing, as the sit-down would have already occurred with my wife. :D

Offtopic: my wife is almost as bad as I am about using her iPhone at inappropriate times. We must look quite pitiful when we go out to lunch, occasionally totally ignoring each other, buried in our iDevices.

Same here.. we have implemented what we refer to as "technology time-outs".. it's not as bad as it sounds but necessary when you have two like us who can become quite engrossed in our tech.

Yeah, and its amazing that there are still people like you who refuse to do ANY due diligence regarding their purchases. If one has dents or dings on the back, then that is unacceptable and should be exchanged. If you have light leakage to where it is impeding on everyday usage, then that is unacceptable and should be exchanged. Then there is the "I demand perfection and won't stop until I get it" crowd. Whichever category you happen to fall into, you are fooling yourself if you think that you are ever going to get a 'perfect' screen. You may get one that has very little light leakage, but it will always be there. It amazes me that there are people like you who have no idea what they are buying, and then complain about it. Furthermore, if the original iPad had this issue, which it did, then why in the world do you think Apple wouldn't have changed it by now if it were such a widespread issue? Those at the Apple stores and Applecare are telling you what you want to hear, until word comes down from corporate to limit exchanges. You will not be seeing a panel change without an increase in price...period.

your perception of anyone in these forums is greatly exaggerated. i can tell. The pictures that people are posting are horrendous. It's like you take it personally when someone says there is a defect, almost like you built their lcds for them. If I had paid 100 bucks for this crap, maybe i'd be ok with it. 500 and up, it better come with more than a defective screen, a charger and cable...OH WAIT. it didn't. what are you really defending here? If you were referring to myself about not doing anything...I posted a couple days ago that I had already returned my iPad2. I'm just on here to see when the issue gets resolved IF it gets resolved. From what applecare guy "Stewart" has been telling me, the issue has been rectified and shouldn't have these issues.

Heres a dumb question though...lets say IF apple DOES fix this problem (although you say there isn't a fix) and people start receiving iPad 2s without any screen bleed or minimal screen bleed...what will you say then?

Heres more customers on apple's discussion page:

Fixed units starting to reach customers?

Over on the Apple forums, there are posts from three separate people today claiming that they have received replacement or brand new iPads with no light leaking issues:

I was quite concerned with this issue while awaiting my ipad2 to arrive. Got it today and absolutely no leakage. Not even a little, which my first gen has. I wonder what percentage og units have the problem?

On my 4th iPad 2, Black 64gig Wifi unit. I live in Vancouver, Canada and had a friend buy a unit from Austin for me a few weeks ago. First unit had yellow blotches and bad bleeding, Apple Canada let me swap it out for a retail unit. New one had a dent and worse bleeding so they replaced it again. 3rd unit had a little bit of bleeding but had a yellow gradient from left to right which was insanely distracting. Especially since I read stuff on the web on it. Went back to the Apple Store and instead of giving me a retail unit, they ordered a replacement which took about 5 days. Picked up my unit today, I am syncing it right now but so far it looks really good. Crossing my fingers that I have a keeper!

I bought a 16 gb black model on 25th march (cdn launch)
My iPad had significant light leaking and a dead pixel.

I went to the apple store at fairview mall in Toronto today and saw a genius.
They were extremely helpful! They acknowledged the problem and
Gave me a new iPad.

However this time I opted to get the white one instead.

I'm happy to say, after a through examination in a dark room with full brightness,
There is no light leak on this one! No dead pixel.

I guess I got Lucky.

Funny thing is that I initially wanted a white one too, but the
Store was sold out on launch and I had to get the black one!

So win win! Thanks apple

Now, this doesn't prove anything. However, it is encouraging that all three posters seem to understand how to test for light leaking, and have seen it before -- so unlikely to be a case of just not noticing it.

Interesting to see if this trend will continue...

Heres some numbers

Hi all

Just wanted to give you some numbers. We all complain about light bleed on such an exspensive device, but people in USA have no idea, just how exspensive ;o)

In USA
The price for a 64GB version is 699$
The price for a 64GB+3G version is 829$

In Denmark
The price for a 64GB version is 960$ with taxes
The price for a 64GB+3G version is 1140$ with taxes

The Danish prices is converted to $ using current currency

I have a 64GB+3G version, not only is it much more exspensive, but I also deliver 50% of my sallery each month to taxes.

This is not a device for every day purchase ;o) - this I have been saving up to for about a year.

So I'm also a bit unsatisfied with the bleed on my screen.

Let's see if new units start to be better... I'm supposed to change mine today... I'll keep you guys posted...

This will be good news if this becomes the norm. We shall see. I'd like to see pics of these no bleed units.

I have mine away with Apple now. I couldn't get to an Apple store because I am back down University. They sent me out a box to send my iPad back and UPS picked it up the same day and it arrived at Apple today.

The person I spoke to on the phone said I would get a brand new one as

1. I am still within the 14 days of my purchase

2. They don't have enough to give people refurbs anyway and he thinks it will be around 6 months before they give people refurbs (Not sure how true this is)

He said it would be checked by them as well to see if there is any light leak or not before it is sent out to me (Apparently) Anyway I had a problem in the left hand corner as well with the white seal which is between the screen and the bezel not matching up so it left a big gap in that corner.

If this one comes back and has issues I think I will just get a refund as I just can't deal with the light leaking through when I am trying to watch movies at night which is what I do most on my iPad.

I'm on iPad number 5 didn't see anything in store but last night watchin BBC iplayer it was noticeable at under 50%. I rang apple this morning and was advised not to swap it, they gave me a case number and said to ring back in 2 weeks and they will tell me if they are now shipping defect free units to my local store. They said it will be swapped for a brand new retail unit. Maybe I will try and get a free dock next already got a free leather case.

Ah yes, indeed this is expensive, however, I bet Denmark has good free healthcare, college education, local farmers (not corporate farms), proper forestry management, lower un-employment and less stressful lives in general. :)

Cheers,

Ah, unicorns and rainbows eh? Free healthcare and college? How do people, I would think above-average intelligence people here, not get nothing is free.

I didn't start it.

'free' as in 'mostly governmentally funded'

.. and where does the government get those funds? Simple math people.

I just don't get how the average person, when given a choice to choose for themselves or have the government choose for them think the government can do a better job. It's one thing to get it when you need it but it's another to think and live the philosophy that more government is inherently better.
